CalorieQueen

Once you eat Miracle Machine, there's just no comparing. Everything else tastes blah. It's horrible, really.

Taryn, on the other hand, she can still enjoy all sorts of exotic materials. Nothing pedestrian like Nth metal or Kryptonite for this girl. We're talking top shelf.

A little Atomic Axe. Some Eye of Ekron. Maybe a bit of Helmet of Nabu, if it's in-season.

Bendis saying this is in continuity, when his own internal continuity is nearly non-existent, just makes me want to... I don't know. I think laughing, crying, and drinking plenty of alcohol will al be appropriate.

I'm disappointed in both of you.

Everyone knows you don't just STOP buying a comic. You buy it for years and complain about it anyway despite the fact that your continued monetary support is exactly why the awful storytelling kept getting worse.

That's why I'm responsible for the last decade of horrible Teen Titans comics due to my support throughout the 2000s.

Because that's America, baby.

Disappointing. At least from what I have seen so far. Could be wrong but then not much seen so far to give a lot of hope.
I wonder if "the amazing response to Legion of superheroes 10!!" will give him the message that rather than it being the best thing ever it's just a case of improvement over what has gone before? Probably not. Listen to me getting all cynical. Not my normal state.

To my mind there has only been one good Legion reimagining in the spirit established in the original and that's the Reboot. Different as it was it still felt like Legion to me. The Threeboot was an interesting read at least at first but totally different characters and a totally different feel and ethos.

As for the current attempt, I am still willing to keep hoping but 10 issues should be enough for anyone to decide. They do feel young, they feel idealistic, they feel generally hopeful and there is beginning to be a tiny bit of sense of family there but their teamwork is atrocious. Character has been very slow or non-existent in portrayal with a few minor exceptions. Jon feels well-rounded but then he was already well-established anyway. However given the solicit and the cover art for the Future State story and Bendis enthusiasm for it and declaring it to be in continuity I am NOT looking forward to it. I guess that might be the most damning thing I can say about any comic solicit.

Hard same. While I started out reading whatever loose Levitz-era issues I could get my hands on, the PZH Legion was the first Legion I read in its entirety.

Oh God yes. The Reboot is the only Legion relaunch that had any staying power, knew what it was doing, and managed to introduce new characters you could care about because they were important to the plot

I personally like the Threeboot because I related to it as a teenager in the early '00s (helicopter parenting styles being the most obvious and least political example I can think of). I feel like Waid was really trying to write something for Millennials. I think Bendis is trying to do the same for Gen Z here.

I have seen many people on here and various fb groups talking about what makes the Legion feel like Legion. A lot these ideas seems to revolve around the idea of an optimistic, space-faring future, a view that was largely shaped by more optimistic times and a more one-sided view of technology. I feel like society is becoming more optimistic, but it is more of a "we have to work to make it better" approach. If the Legion cannot work with the mindsets of the people DC wants to market to, would it be best for DC to stop publishing it?

Alan Moore had an issue of Extraordinary Gentlemen where he parodies DC characters that he feels as being kept alive only for the sake of TV and movies. If companies weren't so obsessed with copyrights, would we have an easier time creating new characters for a new century?

Completely agree with all of you. I grew up with the Reboot, and it had -

1) better characterization (from the beginning everyone had a distinct personality! not like here where you could switch most speech balloons around...)

2) better plotting and pacing (I actually could remember what happened issue by issue...)

3) a great feeling of hope and optimism, but in the beginning there were still credible, palpable threats... and we saw that Legion EARN its reputation and status (with the Daxamite invasion, Fatal Five, Chu sting, Mordru...)

I'm frustrated because there is so much potential in the Legion as a property. but the execution of the current iteration is so terrible

I think the Legion as a concept is still valid, at its core. What Bendis' current iteration does not get is how to execute it. But in these times we need hope and optimism more than ever. and the Legion can be adapted to that.

for what it's worth, I also thought the Threeboot started out well... and that its "youth versus the conservative, close-minded elders" hook was valid and interesting. it just fizzled out after the first year or so... especially with the lack of camaraderie the team had (a deal-breaker for me, as for me the Legion stands for unity, diversity and acceptance - like the Reboot openly did). but certainly a much stronger start than Bendis had.

I think the Threeboot got seriously derailed by Johns introducing his version of the Legion while it was still finding its feet.

I'm increasingly thinking that beginning the story in media res rather than with the origin is a mistake as well.

Vol. 6 #1 is cover-dated February 2005, while the first issue of the Lightning Saga is cover-dated June 2007, so a little over two years if you go by that. But you also have to factor in the hype and behind-the-scenes planning that went into it. The Thom Kallor Starman had been appearing in JSA for about six months before that, for example.

I'd completely forgotten about Thom Kallor in JSA. Gods, he was so annoying when Johns wrote him. I've never been a fan of any of his incarnations, but that one...let's just say I was glad when he got squashed dead at the end of the Retroboot. lol

Anyhow, thanks for providing the proper context and perspective, EDE.

Let me be clear. I wasn't canning the Threeboot. I did enjoy it and it had some really good plotlines. I personally didn't care for the characterisation of Dox (for most of the earlier part you could have dropped in his ancestor Vril II from L.E.G.I.O.N. with no discernible effect and I see them as vastly different characters) nor did I enjoy how the team spent much time in conflict with itself but I did enjoy the way they came together to fight distinct and well-developed opponents. It was a good story and I looked forward to each issue.

Nevertheless the team's attitude and the way it worked reflected a very different approach to that I associate with the Legion. I didn't mind the background of a future that wasn't all optimistic (or if it was it was because of naivety). I enjoyed 5YL for the same reason. A dark, gritty setting where the Legion shines a light in the darkness showing a possible way forward. And on reflection, Threeboot did still manage that, didn't it?

Emily your comments have made me rethink things a bit. Looking back I can see how Threeboot still did embody much of the Legion spirit. Every Legion has had its elements of internal conflict, usually for the best of reasons, and I really did enjoy much of it at the time. Your point about the audience Waid may have been trying to write for and Bendis may now be trying to write for are well made.

My favourite character has almost always been Superman mostly for his approach to his life and others and I guess my attitude to Legion also reflects that. Ironically I have really enjoyed Bendis portayal of Superman, not necessarily all of the plots but his characterisation has been spot on.

stile86, I wish to apologize to you if it came across as if I was upset with you for not liking parts of the Threeboot. Everyone has different tastes and I respect that.

I think sometimes I get just get frustrated with Legion fandom (and to a lesser extent Star Trek fandom) because it seems to be stuck in a paradox. Fans want new content, but there always seems to be complaints that the new content is not as good as the old content. Do people truly want new content then?

I know many of us (me included) were content with making fan fiction, but I don't want to see the Legion become a cultural relic.

Maybe it's because I'm a generation older (although lots of people my age will undoubtedly beg to differ,) but I've come the conclusion recently that a cultural relic is exactly what the Legion is. That's not a bad or a good thing. It just is. And I think we should simply try to make the best of it.

There's a documentary I haven't seen yet (though it's very high on my wishlist) where Star Wars fans argue that they should be allowed to directly contribute to the canon. I think that's what would be best for the Legion at this stage.

I don't see any paradox in this, Emily. Fans want new AND GOOD content.

At least here on LW, I would say 90% of the negative comments on Bendis' Legion are because it's not good. I don't really see many, if any, of us disliking it simply because it's new.
