Yes, yes, obviously my brilliance is on display here. All bow down.
We just won't mention that it was a total guess - well not total, it was consistent with the previous clues.
However I have no idea of the answer - or rather I have several ideas but can't come up with one that exactly fits these four.
Someone else?

I think these 4 Legionnaires were on an archives cover together, so I will guess that. I remember remarking on it because Cos was missing, and Dirk was there instead. 3 Founders + Supes = common, 2 founders + Supes + someone else not Brainiac 5, not common!

It was wrong, according the internet (Cham and Tinya were on the cover I was thinking of, so, oops).

OK. A hint and a half.
The connection has to do with a story and not a specific scene. It also involves the second Legion issue I ever read. (I'm 50 by the way). I am hoping that Dirk makes it easier to figure out as the other three do seem to be together a lot for some reason.
The first issue I read was the end of earthwar and one of the first groups I thought of was from when the negabomb was contained. those panels I can still see without having to refresh my memories but the group of Kal, Mon, Jo and Drake I figured was too generic.)
IDLE.

My mind keeps going to the Sun Boy impersonator story in Smallville but there is no way I can see to connect specifically Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad to that. Jumping to the revival of Lightning Lad story certainly ties in Imra and Supes was somewhat prominent but Dirk?
Sorry Idle but it seems we are all being a bit dense.

Hmmm. Mybe it's not as memorable as I thought. Granted the result of this story is more memorable than the details.
Maybe a quote from a couple of other Legionnaires in the story (that don't fit the connection)
Drake: I'm so mad I could - - Thoom Val: It Looks like you already have.

I vaguely remember that quote but not the context.
Did it have something to do with Lightning Lad's election as leader?

No, after that (although I can't swear Drake didn't say that then) but it was during Garth's tenure as leader.

Hmm. During Garth's tenure but involving Superboy. He was absent for much of that after the battle with the Psycho-Warrior (was that his name) revealed his parent's fate to him and Imra gave him a post-hypnotic suggestion to keep him from returning to the 30th Century until the whole Reflecto thing which was also during Garth's tenure. Was that it? Were those four all attacked by the Psycho-Warrior?

Yes. Those four are the ones the Psycho Warrior attacked with their greatest fears. I admit Dirk's darkness attack is not quite as memorable as Garth's losing Imra, but they were the four.
BTW Psycho-Warrior's name was Thomak or something like that. Stile gets to choose next.
(And I'll try not to be so obscure next time it's my turn)

It was a perfectly fair question. I've just never read that story. That era is easily the one I'm least knowledgeable about.

Well, to be fair I think it was three years before I read the first half but LSH 259 made a big impression on me. I didn't actually start collecting monthly until the Baxter series but I remember that one and the Earthwar issue well. I've been collecting the Legion ever since and have a complete set (of the main series and quite a few appearances) since the end of the Adventure run.

indeed, it was a perfectly fair question. we have precedent after all. just so happened it's an era none of us is particularly knowledgeable about. so don't worry, idle! (I know the Psycho Warrior and have read that story, but it just didn't click for me)
nice analysis/logic, stile! good guessing
