His relationship with Lana Lang was also interesting and entertaining to read. That was one of the many positives to come out of the Bronze Age, allowing the secondary characters to break out of their Silver Age moulds and become more rounded characters in their own right.

My childhood memories seem to recall that Clark was actually dating Lana for a while in Superman stories in at least part of the late Bronze Age. I don't know if the memory is accurate. I seem to recall that Lois was maybe a little jealous, too? I keep flashing back to a scene where Clark and Lana are out together juxtaposed with a scene of Lois moping while riding on horseback, possibly at her family's ranch? I honestly don't know if Earth-1 Clark and Lois ever really officially dated. Seems like she always only had eyes for Superman. Also, adult Lana didn't know Clark's secret pre-Crisis, did she?

Your memory is correct. During part of the time that Clark was working as a newscaster/reader for WGBS Lana was his co-anchor and they dated for a while but I don't believe she ever discovered his secret. I don't remember Lois reaction. I also can't remember if this was before or after Lana's relationship with Vartox. {Pause} From a quick look I would say after, but Vartox still cared for her judging from Alan Moore's depiction of him in "Whatever Happened to the Man of Steel?"

Lana's Wikipedia article says dating Clark was after Vartox. I don't know that Lois was jealous and mopey over Lana/Clark, but she was moping about something while on horseback and presumably on the Lane ranch in a scene I vaguely remember!

I remember it as a new thing from Byrne Same Wikipedia article says nothing about Lana knowing Clark=Superman pre-Crisis. Obviously, post-Crisis she was the main supporting cast member who knew until Lois got engaged to Clark. I'd forgotten, btw, that Pete Ross and Lana got married (and later divorced) post-Crisis. Iromically, Pete never knew Clark's secret post-Crisis and was a much less significant character in the updated mythos.

Thanks, Salty Thothy, for not disappointing us!

Tsk. It was a perfectly innocent comment regarding the heroic centaur/ horse/ bowman/ rodeo star who normally pines after Supergirl, but would provide lots of offbeat adventures for Lois.
