I've tried crocodile, ostrich and kangaroo meat.

I'm thinking for New Year's dinner we'll just split a nice pan-fried strip steak. As kids, my dad called us his "little pack of wolves" at family barbecues. But now that I'm an old fart myself, I think 5 or 6 oz. of steak should suit me just fine. Getting it cooked right is more important than eating 'til I pass out.

I'm off to my folks tomorrow. They have duck on the menu for me. I shall try not to call it Howard at the table.

I am off to my brother’s tomorrow. I will be asleep well before midnight tonight.

I'm off to bed now. In the last few years I like to get to bed before the bells to start the new year off a little brighter, or with a longer lie in.

I'm clearing out old email accounts. Such glamour. I should really ramp up the luxury/excitement and fix myself an herbal tea, too.

I didn't fall asleep in time for 12, so I got to hear some fireworks going off. Up at 6 because the heating now wakes me. That and a visiting cat that is putting us Under Siege more effectively than a Steven Seagal movie. Out you go Ginger Terror...

Mixed crowds yesterday by bringing my MBA friend to my work colleagues.

And the guy I'm dating keeps getting amazed at how many international friends I have. Keeps saying "wow, you have a life!"

Lovely fresh wind off the coast today. Enough to make the sea roar, but not to produce large waves. Only a few dog walkers around. Doggies have no time for New Year Hangovers.

I was visiting some friends today and passing out a late Xmas gift. Lots of nice treats, too.

I've run out of treats. Amazing how quickly they run out with a group of people.

People have been bringing in treats at work. Monday I will share the box of European cookies my landlord gave me.

Not many people back today, so not much in the way of treats. I made the mistake of leaving mine next to the kettle and they have been scoffed along with cups of tea & coffee. I'm surprised my trotter hands can hold the cups.

Whenever I put my food in the fridge at work, I put it in a plastic bag you never know... and then someone gets indigestion from eating it and sues me. The nerve!

They'll need to get their treat indigestion...treat-ed.

Can we have a treaty on the treats? I'm not sure I can stomach much more.

I seem to have bought crisps every time I went shopping before the hols. I'm summoning Tenzil powers to get through them.

I went crazy at the Filipino grocery store over Christmas. But hey, at least now I can survive holed up in my apartment for a week.

They think I'm crazy, but I know better. It is not I who am crazy. It is I who am MAD! Didn't you hear them? Can't you see the crowds?

We're not really a potato-eating country. Now, rice and noodles, on the other hand... add to that our delight in putting oodles of sugar on (and into) everything, and you can see why you are royalty if you have 6-pack abs.

The Irish Potato Famine occurred between 1845 and 1849. A million people died and another million emigrated. This reduced the Irish population by 20-25 %.

There are so many varieties of potatoes around the world. In the U.S., we hardly see any of them. Though some hoity-toity stores now have 5 or 6 varieties to choose from.

When I make albondigas soup, I like to have the very small "fingerling" potatoes in there. Because it's not a long-cooking soup so small, narrow spuds cook evenly and perfectly.

If memory serves, a huge factor in the Irish famine was that they were forced by the Brits to grow only that single variety, the Lumper, to feed themselves. Many other foods which were grown in Ireland were exported to England. (Possibly even some other potato varieties. It's been awhile since I've read up on the whole thing.)

We have a minimum pricing policy for alcohol, meaning that it's more expensive to get a six pack of beer than it otherwise could be.
