Prior to 1913, the U. S. government relied upon alcohol taxes for 1/3rd of its income. Prohibition only became financially viable once the income tax was passed.

Ironically Utah was the last state needed to repeal Prohibition. December 5th is Repeal Day

Some countries celebrate the Feast of Saint Nicholas on 5th December evening.

Any excuse for a feast for some people.

In some Asian countries, people spend crazy amounts of money on a feast to show off.

I really appreciate pot lucks. Yesterday I took BBQ turkey meatballs and a cranberry-pear pie to a pot luck. It was fabulous! I stuffed my face with delicious cheeses, yummy pickled veggies, salad, crackers, and these incredible chocolate-coconut brownies.

(Oh, a few sips of dry champagne. Don't tell my Doc.)

If I took home cooking somewhere, the Pot Luck would be more about their survival chances.

Sweetie, just put that Trader Jo's Space Whale Souffle' in a nice ceramic dish after you've prepared it (according to the manufacturer's instructions). No one will be the wiser. (Okay, we will but we won't say anything because we love you.)

What are these "manufacturer's instructions you speak of?" ……. checks box.... oh..... that would have saved more than a few …..

In unrelated news, shares in Stomach Pump Inc fell sharply today...

Major Blok's Chutney goes really well with the souffle', by the way. Never mind tradition. Sometimes rules are made to be broken.

What a way to ring in the new decade.

I have some old-lady-type exam to go to in a couple of weeks. Reeeeal excited about that, as I'm sure you all can imagine. DoctorMayavale

I always get anxious going to the dentist.

Makes me even more anxious than when I go to get tested for STDs.

cleome53,

No offense but I would rather not imagine an old lady type examination.

Well, that's great for you, Mr. Propriety. At least you have a choice in the matter!

Yeah, that's what I kept telling them. But they put me on the schedule anyway. [grumble]

Seeing pictures of old football crowds the other day, I was struck by the number of EDEsque flat caps in the crowd. They were working class caps worn by the men on their Saturday off. From the football to the pub, perhaps picking up a pink 'un on the way. The pink 'un isn't anything that's going through Ibby's mind, but was in fact a sports paper, rushed out with the days scores. The colour of the paper used gave the paper its title, pink 'un or green 'un etc. I shall return to those pictures to see if any of the flat cap wearers are EDE, travelling back in time.

Good idea to look for the cap but don't you think looking like an emu might be a bit of a giveaway?

You'd think so, but that week in 1947 was "Bring an Emu to T'match" week across Britain.
