Failed Legion applicant Energy Boy claimed to be the hero of Ventura:

According to comicvine, some background:

"Sharles Gluck of Ventura, in the 30th Century. When the Legion announced their latest call for new members, Sharles traveled to Earth to join Legion. He is surrounded by a large Venturian publicity contingent.

Sharles's power comes from his mental control of nuclear forces, bound into a construct called a Nuclo-globe, which is easily disrupted by a lapse in his concentration. "

I didn't see any publicity contingent when he arrived. They must have ditched him when he lost.

And where was he when Micro Lad attacked Dream Girl and Star Boy in the casino in LSH#1?

Hmm.

Initial thoughts would be that his PR people and entourage weren't allowed into tryouts, and were waiting outside with the hoi-polloi, that he wasn't around when Dream Girl and Star Boy were at that Venturan casino (and that he's a little salty about that because they got good press while he was on another continent entirely), and that we need to totally make up amazing feats that he's performed to become 'the hero of Ventura' that we never got to read about.

1) Energy Boy used his nuclo-globes to provide light and heat to the entire city of Endeavor during a fusion powersphere blackout during the winter of 3011.

2) Designed a really pretty costume, to accentuate his nuclo-globe when he charges it up, because it takes forever and he would be a sitting duck in a pitched battle unless his teammates dedicated themselves to protecting him

3) Used to have two 'nuclo-globes', but is said to have sacrificed one to stop the threat of Reverso, who was attempting to turn all of the good luck in Ventura's casinos into bad luck. (Rumor says he actually lost the other nuclo-globe in a tragic punting accident, and that this story was just PR hype.)

4) Introduced "nuclo-globe" as a euphemism for his behind, which allows sentients all over Ventura to admire it without seeming pervy

He introduced Hi-NRG Euro-Disco to Ventura. That's heroic!

He revived buzz cuts, which had fallen out of fashion after Thom grew his hair.

Oh no, this is exactly what I expected. He's pretty lame, based on what we saw of him and merits the usual LW treatment.

Thanks for the link to the more serious discussion, thoth. Before starting this thread, I searched on Energy Boy but (even with quotes) pulled up a lot of references to just energy or boy, and gave up. Quitter Queen!

Heh yeah, he is pretty lame, isn't he?

He may be one of the first bisexual characters in Legion lore though, judging by how he flirted with both Mentalla and with Jed!

I heard there was some mischief between Energy Boy and The Skreaks.

Energy Boy & The Skreaks formed a band, toured the galaxy, and had hit singles with "Ball of Confusion" and "Fish Heads" before creative differences drove them apart. Now EB plays the oldies circuit near Pasnic.

Random observation: Gluck is German for "luck", minus an umlaut.

I noticed that , too. If he'd kept the umlaut, maybe he would have had more luck at the tryout.

I wonder if that's an in-joke by the writer of WWITLSH, given that he's from Ventura.

I like the band idea. He could have gone on to be a big hit on Tharr, revenge success for how Polar Boy sabotaged him.

Noticed that he put on yellow leggings for his Legion try-out. Outside the HQ, he was bare-legged. Maybe yellow leggings are good luck on Ventura.

If that's true, wouldn't we see a lot of people wearing yellow leggings in every casino on Ventura? Maybe they were just Energy Boy's lucky leggings. The same way I have a lucky tie that I wore for a job interview a few days ago.

To the tune of Lady Gaga's "Boys Boys Boys" --

He drives a nice car
Energy Boy,
Gets loaded at bars
Energy Boy,
We love him, we love him"
