Yes, I was aware of that. Also of V for Vendetta. Neither had an annual, as far as I know.
Is the series the annual comes from set in the future?

Was it set in the DC Universe? This particular annual was not, although most of the regular series and its other annuals were. (and this clue probably gives the answer away)

addendum, to make my methodology of answers more consistent.
Early on, the 'mystical genre' question was asked, and I limited my response to the annual only. In later answers, I also noted if the regular series would have a different answer.
For the sake of continuity with other answers, I will note that while the annual was not mystical, the regular series attached to the annual could be so classified, depending on the storyline.
