wow... nice thread, thoth. Gets me a bit emotional seeing all of them like this.

One correction - Dragonmage's given name is Xao, not Tao.

I had forgotten how many died during Lo3W.
Including those times like Mask Man was unexpected but appropriate I think.

Thanks. Every one of them would have been someone's favourite, so it was nice to remember them all.

Thanks! Now fixed. As I ended up posting them all at speed, I'd be surprised if that's the only typo, so do please let me know. I was toying with putting the Academy students up too, and finding a way of designated the ones that weren't legionnaires, but reserve/ honorary etc. I'll see.

All in one needlessly extended fight scene really to my mind. But that's what Johns was doing everywhere else, so why would this be an exception?

That was a really unsettling read. I only read it for the first time as part of the reread thread, and I was shocked. Having read the Reflecto saga, seeing Ultra Boy supposedly dead wasn't a new thing. But then it just got worse and worse for them... >shivers<

I feel kind of dumb for missing that. I mean, she got better and all, but Apparition's death was one of the most memorable scenes in the Reboot for me

It was a powerful, visceral, haunting scene. I consider L* Annual 2 to be one of the single most well-written issues in all the decades that the Legion has existed in one form or another.

I also LIKED Apparition pre-death much, MUCH better than I EVER liked Phantom Girl. I talked about that quite a bit in my Luornu thread recently, so I'll just reiterate the gist -- Postboot Tinya was well-defined, complex, and strong, while I feel that Preboot Tinya was never more than a pretty face framed by a couple of age-inappropriate but very healthy-looking pigtails.

Point being, I think bringing Apparition back to life was a cop-out. After she was back in the future, she and Jo (whose Postboot version I also far prefer to his Preboot counterpart) both got whinier and less likeable, and DnA just made them both even worse.

Personally, I'd like to have seen Postboot Jo and Sussa gradually drift back into each others' arms in the aftermath of Tinya's death.

Thanks Nighty! I'll dig that one out (ah, probably not the right choice of words for a dead Legionnaires thread smile) and add it in.

Now I'm picturing Tinya in Catriona Mac Call's role in Fulci's "Fear in the City of the Living Dead."

Specifically, the scene involving the pickaxe that keeps just barely missing Ms Mac Call as some dim bulb tries to free her from the coffin she was mistakenly placed in...

Oh, hang on a minute, Tinya can turn intangible, so no worries then, la la la la la.

lol

grin

Yeah, it's an awful feeling when you see characters you like become nothing more than cannon fodder for a really poor storyline.

Alas, poor Mentalla. Had that been the Silver Age, she would almost definitely have succeeded in her infiltration...

Jed's death was much more meaningful than Berta's, despite them dying in the same "story". At least Jed succeeded in awakening Mysa's spirit, so to speak. Berta was just cannon fodder.

And like Dave said above, Una's death by rat was such a waste of space.

What a neat initiative which we haven't really had compiled in one place before. Thanks for doing this, thoth.

Seeing it in this format and factoring in a few of the Elseworlds, it's interesting which Legionnaires seem to die frequently across continuities and who never register an appearance. Colossal Boy and Sun Boy have really tallied some deaths. Not to mention poor Lu.

Thanks Future. it was an offshoot for something ahead in Bits where the characters are in the Hall of Heroes and I needed to work out who was in there. But also from your own excellent Micros thread where I go across each of them going "Active", "Dedded", "Lost in Time", "Dedded", "Dedded"... smile
