Alright. I've been inspired to read some letters pages from early Adventure. It turns out we owe "Bits of Legionnaire Business" to two gentlemen. Here's the backstory:

Legion took over the backup story in Adventure Comics as of #300, replacing "Tales of the Bizarro World". In the Smallville Mailsack (the letter column) for Adventure Comics #301 a reader named Allen Pilcher from Memphis, Tennessee wrote:

Dear Editor, Now that "Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes" has taken the place of "Tales of the Bizarro World", will you encourage readers to send in "Bits of Legionnaire Business"?
The editor responded, "Only if you can define for us what's a 'bit of L.B.'".

Three issues later, in Adventure #304, Buddy LaVigne of Northbrook, Illinois suggested... "How about if a 'Bit of Legionnaire Business' is a postal card with a few lines suggesting the name of a NEW super-hero to be admitted in the Legion, plus a suggestion of the super-power he might possess. Thus, a bit of 'L.B.' might be: "I suggest a new character, POLAR BOY, who has the power of freezing to ice anything in his area."
The editor liked Buddy's idea, and Bits of L.B. was born: "Great Idea. Readers, take note and start sending us your suggestions on a postal card. We'll print the best ones and use all accepted new characters in future Legion tales."

And Adventure Comics #307 had the first full blown "Bits". Thanks to both Allen and Buddy for a grand old tradition that actively involved young readers in shaping the future. LLL!

Yes, by almost two years. Insect King was listed in Adventure Comics #314 (November 1963 cover date) and Lana Lang first used the bio-ring to become Insect Queen in Superboy #124 (October 1965 cover date).

Craig,

If you have some the lettercols they're missing, you might try sending them to the folks that run that site that I got these off of (the link is in my first post). I can't remember the couple's name off hand, but they're the ones who used to post as "Sir Prize and Miss Terious" on the old DCMBs for awhile.

Endurance Girl and Airless Boy would have been especially suited for any LSH mission that involved being marooned on a dead world for a length of time.

Oh I am so there squared!

Lat's begin with a young lady who obviously must be allied with the Dominion to help take over Toonar in Matter-Eater Lad & the LSH, thereby explaining the lunatics!

Charlie, this one's for you bud!

Hopefully Adam would like this design. Degree Damsel appeared in MEL:TS as a newbie to Evillo's Devil's Dozen, but she spent most of her time raising HIS temperature instead of fighting....
