Now I want to listen to the theme song again. And hear Porky stutter.

Merrie Melodies were originally cartoons created to plug popular songs owned by Warner Brothers. So they were like pre-television music videos.

Silly Symphony is a series of 75 animated short films produced by Walt Disney Productions from 1929 to 1939. As their name implies, the Silly Symphonies were originally intended as whimsical accompaniments to pieces of music. As such, the films usually had independent continuity and did not feature continuing characters, unlike the Mickey Mouse shorts produced by Disney at the same time. (Exceptions to this include Three Little Pigs, The Tortoise and the Hare, and Three Orphan Kittens, which all had sequels.) The series is notable for its innovation with Technicolor and the multiplane motion picture camera, as well as its introduction of the character Donald Duck making his first appearance in the Silly Symphony cartoon The Wise Little Hen in 1934.

In Mystery Science Theater 3000's take on the dreadful movie Time Chasers aka Tangents, the villain sounded a lot like Sylvester the Cat. I was bummed that nobody in the audience made any jokes about it.

Sylvester appeared in 103 cartoons in the golden age. He appeared fourth most frequently in films behind Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, and Daffy Duck respectively. Three of his cartoons won Academy Awards, the most for any starring Looney Tunes character: they are Tweetie Pie, Speedy Gonzales, and Birds Anonymous.

Birds Anonymous is a brilliant satire. I don't think they showed it even during the Turner Network's rebroadcasting binge in the late 1990s. I'm not sure why.

Of course, who can forget Elmer in that Chuck Jones cartoon carrying off Bugs the bride, with Bugs turning to the audience and concluding, "I t'ink it always helps a picture t'have a romantic ending!"

Then there's What's Opera, Doc?, where Elmer kills Bugs then collapses in a sobbing heap. Make up your mind, Elmer!

And Bugs goes, well, did you expect a happy ending from an opera?

You've seen the live-action version of that, right? I can't remember if I ever posted it here.

There's another version with better dance moves, but this one has the closest voices. You've gotta' love "Elmer" not quite being able to pick up the "'dead' wabbit" because the latter's too heavy.
