We all like our obscure Legion characters, but this thread will introduce you to possibly the most obscure of the obscure: those reader-suggested Legion character who made it in to the letter columns of the old Adventure issues but never appeared in the series itself!

Yes, that's right. In the old days, readers like yourself used to send in their ideas for new Legionnaires. Many of these actually made it in to the series itself as bit players, such as the Heroes of Lallor or the Murran infiltrators, and some later became fairly major characters, like Polar Boy, Color Kid, and Porcupine Pete.

In this thread I'll be reproducing the old "Bits of Legionnaires Business" sections of the Adventure letter columns, which contain the reader-suggested characters. Some of the unused ones are pretty interesting...

And in case you're wondering, I'm getting these from the following site: http://members.shaw.ca/legion_of_super-heroes/letter_columns/
where you can find Adventure era letter columns reproduced in their entirety! Some of the earlier ones are missing (including the first BoLB feature, which introduces Polar Boy), and they only run through Adv. #350 at present, but they're still pretty cool...

BITS OF "LEGIONNAIRE BUSINESS"

The three new super-characters who appear in this issue's feature story were thought up by three of our readers, who submitted the ideas to the "Bits of Legionnaire Business" department we used to run in this magazine. The creators of these characters were: James Vincent, Fairfax, Va. -BLACKOUT BOY; Tony Edwards, Yuma, Ariz. -STAR LAD; Bill Martin, Milwaukee, Wis. -MAGNETIC BOY.

In the past, we have occasionally used other heroes suggested by our readers. For instance, the very first "bit of business" submitted was POLAR BOY, who became leader of the Legion of Substitute Heroes. We intend to use still others in the future.

Here are some of the better "bits of Legionnaire business" sent in by readers of the past: Lucinda Briggs, Port Alsworth, Alaska: "TELEPORT GIRL . . . she possesses the unique ability to teleport herself anywhere, through time, space and matter." . . . David Dickhereber, Wentzville, Mo.: "RADAR LAD, a boy who can detect any object and pinpoint its location on the map." . . . Janet Hein, West N.Y., N.J.: "CREATIVE GIRL . . . she has the power of creating anything she wishes." . . . Bill Hodges, Huntsville, Ala.: "VIBRATORY BOY . . . his power consists of emitting vibratory pulsations with which he can shatter any object." . . . Ronald Domsky, Philadelphia, Pa.: "MOLECULE BOY . . . he can re-arrange the molecules of any object to form something else; for instance, he could change a crook's ray gun into a harmless pencil."

Bob Marcus, East Meadow, L.I.: "BRITTLE BOY, who can break himself into hundreds of pieces and then re-unite." . . . Mike Witherspoon, Weatherford, Tex.: "KEY KID, a lad who has the power of opening any lock with his fingers." . . . Matthew Maynard, Seattle, Wash.: "NATURE BOY . . he can cause tidal waves, stop waterfalls, make volcanoes erupt." . . . Jeff Greenberg, Los Angeles, Calif.: "COLOR KID . . . he can change himself or any object to any color of the spectrum." . . . Barbara Reed, Yuma City, Calif.: "ATOMIC KID . . . he has the power of atomic radiation and the explosive force of an atomic bomb." . . . Roger Ho, New York, N.Y.: "VOCAL WHIZ . . . he can perfectly imitate anyone's voice." . . . Randy Steele, Tunkhan Rock, Pa.: "CYCLONE KING . . . he can create twisters, monsoons, typhoons, etc." . . . Peter Sipchen, Richardson, Tex.: "SLOW-MOTION KID . . . he has the power to slow down any moving object or person."

J. Adam King, Yellow Springs, Ohio: "DEGREE DAMSEL . . . she has the power to alter the temperature of anything." . . . Jeff Baker, Ft. Worth, Tex. "MEDIC MASTER . . . he can cure any disease or illness." . . . Dennis Persica, New Orleans, La.: "BIRD GIRL . . . she has the power of doing anything that any bird can do." . . . Neat stuff EDE, thanks for posting! It was fun seeing all the characters that did eventually make their way into the Legion universe in one form or another.

My question though: anyone know if Insect King presates our beloved redheaded Insect Queen?

Negative Nellie is a prime candidate for Matter-Eater-Ladization!

Oh, there must be some members here in that list. ID yourselves! Take your well deserved worship with humility.

I was reading an old issue today (the one were Violet was recovered from the tank I think) that had a fan letter from Colleen Doran. cool.

Fascinating, indeed!

It's interesting to see how creative some folks were -- there were easily a dozen submissions that would have been GREAT in the actual book.

I think it's also interesting that there seems to have been a much larger female readership for the Legion back then -- if the names of people submitting potential Legionnaires is at all indicative of the general readership as a whole.

If you look at the old letter columns, one of the constant complaints is about the skewed male-female ratio in the Legion itself.

Thanks for sharing this, EDE. Man I found this fascinating. I remember making my own Legion-type heroes when I was a kid. Could you imagine the thrill of seeing your own creation brought to life in the pages of your favorite comic book? Did other Silver Age books ever get this kind of response from its readers? It seems all we see from readers today is long, drawn out lists of already established characters that we want to see in our favorite super-group.

One question, though - I thought Crystal Kid was a reader suggestion from a Bob Cohen or something similar. That's why CK's real name in the book was Bobb Cohn or something like that. Here they say that Patrick Chupp contributed it.

I'll add my thanks to the others EDE. Appreciate you sharing these. Do you happen to know which issue the Polar Boy write up was supposed to be in? Maybe we can hunt it down and add it to the bunch.

I would guess that it's in #306 (which is when the Subs make their first appearance). #303 and #304 are the other lettercols that are missing that it could possibly be in.

I'm pretty certain their are others from later on in the series (I think Infectious Lass is a reader-suggested character, for instance) as well.
