In the Philippines, it's customary to address your boss, your teacher/professor, those more senior than you, and your clients/customers as "Sir" or "Ma'am".

Same for those of us raised in the Southern part of the US. My first time in New England, I was constantly corrected on the use of "Ma'am" as if it was a bad thing. It is a sign of respect and those that took it wrong were in my opinion being impolite and disrespectful of me.

Yeah, I think some people fail to consider the differences in culture. Those of us who use Sir and Ma'am are only trying to be polite. Corrections can be made gently and with sensitivity.
