Our final three is kind of interesting, the more I think about it, because they basically embody or represent three aspects of the JSA. Kent represents the founders. Helena represents the legacy. Ma represents the spirit. It's interesting how it boils down here.
Still "Lardy" to my friends!

That is a very nice summing up of the final 3, Lardy.
And thanks to all for sharing thoughts on the finalists. It's great reading everyone's memories about what makes these characters special.

Ma Hunkel kinda throws me -- since she was a joke character for so long and then Johns brought her into JSA in an interesting way
Kent Nelson's Dr. Fate is definitely my favorite iteration of the character (although I am one of the 6 people that also enjoyed Jared Stevens). His costume and abilities have always been a standout character in his appearances.
Alas, Helena Wayne was one of the first characters that I thought was completely cool. I saw both her and Dr. Fate for the first time in the JLA/JSA/New Gods crossover. They were both awesome but I loved the idea of the Batman's daughter, especially as I found other stories (like the Spirit King mystery and the WW backups).
So I'm sticking to my guns. Helena is awesome.

With Ma Hunkel, I acknowledge she didn't play the biggest role in the JSA. And I agree with Myg and thoth that she was a joke character for so long. That is why I appreciate Johns' bringing her in in a non-fighting role. A great way to make use of her. Besides her grandma-ness, I am sticking with her because never in a million years had I expected she would make it all the way to the end of an Idol game

Ma Hunkel kinda throws me -- since she was a joke character for so long and then Johns brought her into JSA in an interesting way Certainly in my time reading comics, it's the joke part that's been lost in reading the funnies. With so many gritty, dark, oh-so-serious reads, it's easy to lose sight of a time when strips from the big two could be played for laughs. For the simple fun of things. Sure, we have Ambush Bug, but it's a different, more satirical, kind of humour there. In strips like Red Tornado and Plastic Man we see the concentrated humour that also had a vein in the comedy sidekicks of a number of heroes, and remember when there were a lot more laughs in superhero books. Kent Nelson's Dr. Fate is definitely my favorite iteration of the character ... His costume and abilities have always been a standout character in his appearances.
Yeah, I always liked his look. Simple, elegant, and a little menacing with a good, eye catching bright colour scheme. Yup, getting the back issue of that would have been one of my first reads of the Huntress too. You get that transition from Dick Dillin to George Perez, when the former died. So, a pretty big story for a lot of reasons. I did get a beat up issue of All-Star with the Thorn and Wildcat at one point too. Her stint as Wonder Woman's backup feature was quite lengthy, spanning WW 271-221 (with occasional absences allowing for some full-length WW adventures). That's over 4 years! I think she probably would have graduated to her own mag if not for Crisis sealing her fate. Although a lot of characters had to get cut back from the Implosion, the Huntress back ups (and for so long thanks Lardy) were a sign that she was a character DC looked at for future features. As for my vote, I'm going to go with... Doctor Fate The Huntress has a cool costume, a more focused origin, that very cool crossbow, a better personality and is an unmatched inheritor to one of DC's big three. There's also that little hint of disappointment that DC's policies prevented her getting past Crisis. She wasn't shelved because of any failings on her part. Quite the opposite, as her creators were keen to restart with a fresh character (according to that Absolute Crisis thing) Fate was the JSA character, in all those crossovers who didn't really have an Earth-1 parallel. He was a sign that Earth-1 hadn't mined all of the cool stuff. I've probably voted for the original JSAers more than their newer versions/ more recent characters. I've liked digging up some of the JSA origins to see just how much they've changed and my vote is a little swayed by that too.

FINALE ENDS!
And after a nail-biting 48 hours...
In 3rd place, against all the odds...
(Justice Society) Red Tornado (Ma Hunkle) - 3
In 2nd place, after dominating the list most rounds and never coming close to elimination...
(Justice Society) Huntress (Helena Wayne of Earth-2) - 4
And finally, after making it through last round because of a clever player's gamble...
(Justice Society) Doctor Fate (Kent Nelson) - 5
Congrats to our second male winner!
And congrats, indeed, to all our three finalists.
And a big, big thank you to all the players. As with previous Idols, a lot of the fun was sharing our experiences with the characters. I gained new appreciation for many of them because of your insights.
And as with other Idols, this one was full of surprises - thanks for an exciting few weeks.

Thanks for running such a dynamic Idol with such a good balance of culling and voting methods.
Just like to add thanks to those sharing their thoughts on the characters. Like Ibby, I think a lot of the fun is in learning what they mean to others.

It was *tough* to cut numbers in those early rounds, and that moved seamlessly into the rounds where I'd lose people I wanted to do well every time. But at the same time, personal favourites (whether you realised it or not in my case); the ones you *had* to give top points to were allowed to develop support.
Then onto the really evenly balanced closing rounds where anything could and did happen.
I do wonder how well Anna Fortune might have done if Jf had joined just a little earlier...

In Idol I just pick a fave and give him/her top points every round. It is not always enough to keep said fave in the game (as evidenced by Dr. Light's failure to break the top 12 in JLIdol). But if someone else ranks that character high consistently, it can get said character far. Just look at Ma Hunkel's surprising 3rd place finish! And because I know someone will mention them, the victories of Kinetix and Kole

Congrats to Doc Fate for taking home the gold! Honestly, of all the founders, he was probably the one I thought least likely to win, maybe because he usually came off so cold and aloof, even as Kent Nelson. In fact, my favorite iteration of Fate was the Eric and Linda version showcased during the Dematteis/McManus run of Fate's first ongoing series. (The subsequent Messner-Loebs/Giarrano/Gross run in the same title featuring Inza was pretty good as well.) But Fate repeatedly made my lists here because of his presence and legacy in the JSA, so I can't be disappointed in the outcome.
My goal from the start was for Helena to get into the finals, so I feel gratified that she had so much support. As I've said, she was a wonderful legacy character and one who walked her own path. It's her and characters like Power Girl, Stargirl and Michael Holt who really made the JSA something more than just an older, different-looking version of the JLA. So 2nd place for her when such giants as Jay, Alan, Ted and Jim Corrigan couldn't make it that far (or not even close) is a great showing.
Shout out to Ma and Ystina for being unexpected powerhouses as well.
Excellent game, Ibby!
Still "Lardy" to my friends!

Helena and Kara stand as that fulcrum of JSA heroes. Linked to the originals, strong enough to stand as individuals, and ushering in the likes of Infinity Inc and all those that came after.
As I mentioned I seem to have a pool of characters, without really strong favourites. It would be the same for the Titans and Legion too. I did note that it felt as though I had to give points to Alan Scott in this one, to give him a fighting chance of staying in some rounds. It probably made him more of a favourite as the game went on as a result.

Love that Helena and Kent lasted that long, and while Ma Hunkel was not my favorite of that trope, I do like that she soldiered on as the classic 40's hero, with no powers, just pluck and spirit and a good right hook (which was common for masked heroes of the age, including people like Dr. Midnight or Wildcat).
It was also cool that Alan and Kara lasted as long as they did, because both are classics.
I tend to vote heavily for the ones that had no chance, just because my tastes are insane, like Amazing Man and Air Wave, so it's actually cool that sometimes someone I never would have expected, like Ystina or Ma Hunkel, hangs in there with more classic character like Kent Nelson or Alan Scott.

This was fun. Congrats, Dr.Fate. By the way, anti-heroes on this list such as Black Adam will be in a future Villain Idol (probably Legion of Doom title). I plan to start a Spider-Villain Idol around Halloween.

Thanks, Lardy! And thanks for sharing so much about what made Huntress special. Like with Lardy and Set, I'm also happy that we had some relatively obscure characters do so well in this game. Glad you had fun, Emily.
