I'm still planning to vote this round, but it may be later tonight...

I agree with Emily about Mac Raboy, but I thought that I'd eventually prefer Captain Marvel to a derivative later, so didn't give points.

Looking at the numbers, if they stand, Paladin's vote may have saved the bacon of a lot of original JSAers. Even more interestingly one of the 12 characters without any votes yet is a founding JSAer, not who I would have expected either.

Thanks for the catch, Dave! I haven't been able to give more than a passing glance to the votes - swamped at work.

No worries, the round ends tonight my time anyway. That's about 16 hours from now.

And thanks to everyone who has been sharing commentary. Part of the fun of previous Idol games was the discussions on the characters - who did surprisingly well, who did surprisingly poorly, and why. smile

With Thoth's vote Al Pratt gets on the board, but he's still well below the cutoff.

In my process I mostly chose just one version of the same character. (The exceptions, kind of, were Ted Knight, Stargirl and Sylvester Pemberton, who all had similar names and powers.) In Al's case, the thing I liked best about him was his role in Albert Rothstein's backstory. Given that, I gave Albert the nod over his mentor.

I liked Al Pratt's portrayal in the short lived JSA series after their return from Limbo. He was the serious man to Wildcat's knucklehead (when in other portrayals, Al was the sort of knucklehead). I think that was also the start of his energy powers.

I like Al Pratt's Logo, "The Mighty Atom" in early comics. I have come to realize a lot of my votes this game are being determined based on art. I think it goes along with the general consensus that the art was better than the writing in the Golden Age.

I certainly would not call the Golden Age comics I have read literary masterpieces. That said, I have not read many and I can't give an opinion on the Golden Age as a whole.

I mostly go by how much I like a character when I vote.

Round 3 Begins!

We have our Top 60, but let's go down to... Top 40!

Pick 20 characters from the list, and rank them 1-20. Points will be given as follows:

Rank Points
1 - 350
2 - 250
3 - 180
4 - 130
5 - 95
6 - 75
7 - 60
8 - 50
9 - 40
10 - 35
11 - 30
12 - 25
13 - 20
14 - 17
15 - 14
16 - 11
17 - 8
18 - 5
19 - 3
20 - 1

We will eliminate the Bottom 39 vote-getters to get to our Top 60!

House Rules

1) Each round will last about 48 hours. I will try to end each round at the same time, but this won't always be possible because of work.
2) I'll vote at the start of every round to minimize bias on my part.
3) I don't encourage editing of votes; it's a smart tactic but may be unfair for those who don't get to log on as often. However, I won't disallow them either. I'll only tally votes at the end of each round (to make it easier on myself!). I'll post on this thread the minute I start tallying to alert everyone; votes that come in after that will be ignored.
4) In case of errors in the results, I'll post a correction immediately. If anyone's vote was affected by the error, that poster will be notified by PM immediately. If the poster cannot correct his/her votes before the end of the round, he/she will get a makeup point next round - a +15 bonus. This only applies to instances where I made the error, and not where the poster made an error.
5) Points will be given based on your ranking. The higher you rank a character on your list, the more points that character will get (e.g. Rank 1 gets 10 points, Rank 2 gets 9 points...) Point distributions will change per round. If characters tie, the tie will be broken by considering the total number of points characters have gotten in previous rounds.
6) Exception to the above will be the first 1-2 rounds of the game, which trim the list down considerably. Each vote will count as one point, and characters below a certain point threshold get eliminated.

7) Because several characters have the same code name, and because the list includes multiple realities, PLEASE SPECIFY which character you are voting for. In fact, as much as possible PLEASE use the exact name that I have used on the list (this will make it easier for me to tally votes using Microsoft Excel!)

I won't make assumptions for votes which don't identify the character clearly. Example, if you vote for:

1) Doctor Fate
2) Cyclone
3) Star-spangled Kid
4) Green Lantern (TV: Brave and the Bold)

I'll only count the votes for Cyclone and Green Lantern. I have no way of knowing if you're voting for Dr. Fate Kent Nelson vs. Dr. Fate Kent V. Nelson, or whether you're voting for Star-spangled Kid Sly Pemberton, or Courtney Whitmore (she briefly used that name)!

Teams still represented:

Justice Society of America
Freedom Fighters
All-Star Squadron
Infinity Inc.
Squadron of Justice
SSoV / Seven Soldiers of Victory
Young All-Stars

*note - only included those with speaking parts or significant characterization in the story

I listed characters according to code name. When classifying them under the appropriate team, I started with the JSA - so if a character has ever been a JSA member, they are listed there. Besides Hector Hall as Dr. Fate and Silver Scarab, I only listed a "core" reality character under one team. So Al Rothstein is Atom-Smasher under JSA, and is not listed under Infinity Inc. as Nuklon.

The Top 60:

(All-Star Squadron) Amazing Man (Will Everett)
(All-Star Squadron) Captain Marvel (Earth-S)
(All-Star Squadron) Commander Steel
(All-Star Squadron) Dr. Occult
(All-Star Squadron) Firebrand (Danette Reilly)
(All-Star Squadron) Manhunter (Paul Kirk)
(All-Star Squadron) Sargon the Sorceror
(All-Star Squadron) Tarantula
(All-Star Squadron) Zatara
(Freedom Fighters) Phantom Lady (Sandra Knight)
(Freedom Fighters) Plastic Man
(Freedom Fighters) Red Bee (Rick Raleigh)
(Infinity Inc.) Brainwave, Jr.
(Infinity Inc.) Fury (Lyta Hall)
(Infinity Inc.) Jade

Random comments:

I expected lovebirds Rick Tyler and Jessie Quick to last longer.

I'm also surprised at Hector Hall's early exit. I never read Infinity Inc., but I always thought he would be fairly popular.

We lost a lot of originals - Ted Knight, Al Pratt. I'm not as surprised by Terry Sloane.

The original Freedom Fighters were decimated too - Doll Man, Black Condor, Uncle Sam. Only Phantom Lady, Plastic Man, and (to my surprise) Red Bee remain.

I'm not surprised that Huntress topped the list, but I am surprised (a bit) by how far ahead she was of everyone else! Happy to see Firebrand (Danette) do so well too, I've only read two stories with her in it (one of them COIE) but I liked her a lot even after just those two.

Let's look at legacies. Michael Holt is way ahead of Terry Sloane. Jack Knight beats Ted Knight, but not by as wide a margin. Conversely, for Hourman and Liberty Belle it was the parents who outlasted the kids.

And both Cyclone and Ma Hunkle are doing quite well (so far).

As expected, Jay Garrick and Alan Scott doing well.

Not surprised to see them go, but am surprised that both Black Adam and Thom got 0 votes.

The two Canaries are less than 10 points apart.

Kendra's the most popular Hawk by far.

Dan the Dyna-Mite outlasts TNT (no surprise given his exposure in YA).

Robin tops Batman by a wide margin.

Classic Cap stays, modern goes home.

Funny how for some characters, modern trumps classic, and for others, vice versa. Goes to show how varied our tastes are. I think it also shows that we voters tend to appreciate multiple eras.

The Hawks have the largest "family" left with 4 (Northwind, Carter, Shierra and Kendra).

The GL, Bat, Thunder and Super families all have 3 (if you count Iron Munro as a Supes stand-in).

Mystics and Magical-based heroes are by far the most prevalent on the list.

It's so weird for me. I struggle in Legion or JLA groups to find dudes and not end up with a massively top-heavy all-lady list of favorites, but with the JSA/All-Stars/Infinity Inc/Young All-Stars crews, there are a ton of guys I like!

And while Helena Wayne is a favorite, I suspect she can go a round without my top vote (and while I love me some Hawkgirl and Black Canary, these aren't the versions of those characters I love most). I will shake my fist and rail against the gods and give that to Sargon the Sorcerer this round, so that he gets a good showing before Dr. Fate (rightly!) kicks his butt right off this list. smile

1 (All-Star Squadron) Sargon the Sorceror
2 (Young All-Stars) Iron Munro
3 (All-Star Squadron) Manhunter (Paul Kirk)
4 (Infinity Inc.) Northwind
5 (Justice Society) Doctor Fate (Kent Nelson)
6 (Justice Society) Robin (Dick Grayson of Earth-2)
7 (All-Star Squadron) Amazing Man (Will Everett)
8 (Justice Society) Air Wave III (Harold Jordan)
9 (Justice Society) Huntress (Helena Wayne of Earth-2)
10 (Justice Society) Damage
11 (SSoV) Bulleteer
12 (Justice Society) Thunderbolt
13 (All-Star Squadron) Firebrand (Danette Reilly)
14 (All-Star Squadron) Commander Steel
15 (Justice Society) Obsidian
16 (Infinity Inc.) Brainwave, Jr.
17 (Infinity Inc.) Fury (Lyta Hall)
18 (Young All-Stars) Dan the Dyna-Mite
19 (All-Star Squadron) Dr. Occult
20 (Justice Society) Hawkgirl (Kendra Saunders)

Between Dr. Fate, Zatara, Dr. Occult and Sargon the Sorcerer, there's really an embarrassment of riches for the fan of mystical heroes! All of them are great (and Zatara still has some residual good feelings from me for his Young Justice cartoon appearance, although he's been totally eclipsed in the comics by his daughter's popularity).

I really had to go with my favs in Round 2. There wasn't much room to add in characters based on the odd moment of greatness.

Of those gone...

Rick & Jesse were part of that dreadful arc where far too many legacy heroes were introduced. The originals had features, but these were just throwaways.

Ted Knight was your standard bored playboy. I don't even remember him inventing the cosmic rod thingy. Thomas was toying with giving him some racial prejudices to give his cast more flavour. So no great loss and better done by Robinson in a couple of titles.

Shame about a number of the Freedom Fighters. As nice a reintroduction as that was in the early '70s some of them are better than that.

Johnny Quick going was a bit of a surprise. His feature lasted a long time. Had the Flash not got a Silver Age revamp, perhaps it would have been Johnny in the JLA.

Robotman going is another surprise. Like Johnny, his strip lasted a long time. He had become very versatile as time went on. Flight, elongated arms etc. Like Johnny, he was a part of that core Squadron group too. That, plus the inherent pathos of his character.

I recall reading that Thomas was possibly going to bump off the Silver Scarab. This would have been before his changes. He wasn't as popular as the other Infinitors, it was felt.

One Infinitor who made his way from Golden, Silver, Bronze and post Crisis was the Star Spangled Kid. But no luck getting past ROund 2 for him.

Johnny Quick was one of my favorite speedsters. Being able to fly really set him apart from the various Flashes, making him something like Northstar, over at Marvel. (Plenty of the Krypto/Daxamite/Shazam folk combine flight with super-speed, but they also have a raft of other powers.)

Which should probably make Quicksilver worth a mention. Who's Who suggested that he performed lots of acrobatic tricks with his super speed. Appearing between speeding propeller blades for example. It was another remove from the trial of Barry Allen and the darker, later stories.

I thought that Quicksilver/Max Mercury being heavily featured as Bart Allen's mentor (including a couple of Reboot Legion appearances!) would have given him a few votes.
