After Emily Sivana's fun and successful batch of Villain idols, let's switch it up a bit and do another Hero Idol!

For now, I want to get feedback on the characters for inclusion in this Idol. The theme is Justice Society and related teams (Infinity Inc., All-Star Squadron, Freedom Fighters, Seven Soldiers of Victory, Young All-Stars...)

The concept of an Idol game is that players get to vote for their FAVORITES, instead of voting for the characters they most want off the list.

In my Hero Idols, players have to rank their faves. The higher the rank, the more points a character gets. So your rank 1 might get 10 points, but rank 2 only gets 8, and so on. My rules are a bit different from Emily's.

Idol games typically produce lots of surprises. Many "popular" characters have been eliminated in the first few rounds of past games, while some relatively obscure or underdog characters have made it to the top (just look at the list of past winners below)!

For those not familiar, you may check out previous Idol games. Rules vary slightly but the concept is the same. In order of recency -

Justice League Idol (Winner: Barry Allen)
Titans Idol (Winner: Kole)
Multiverse Legion Idol (Winner: Kinetix)
Reboot Legion Idol (Winner: Triad)
Preboot Legion Idol (Winner: White Witch)

House Rules

1) Each round will last about 48 hours. I will try to end each round at the same time, but this won't always be possible because of work.
2) I'll vote at the start of every round to minimize bias on my part.
3) I don't actively encourage editing of votes; it's a smart tactic but may be unfair for those who don't get to log on as often. However, I won't disallow them either. I'll only tally votes at the end of each round (to make it easier on myself!). I'll post on this thread the minute I start tallying to alert everyone; votes that come in after that will be ignored.
4) In case of errors in the results, I'll post a correction immediately. If anyone's vote was affected by the error, that poster will be notified by PM immediately. If the poster cannot correct his/her votes before the end of the round, he/she will get a makeup point next round - a +15 bonus. This only applies to instances where I made the error, and not where the poster made an error.
5) Points will be given based on your ranking. The higher you rank a character on your list, the more points that character will get (e.g. Rank 1 gets 10 points, Rank 2 gets 9 points...) Point distributions will change per round.
6) Exception to the above will be the first 1-2 rounds of the game, which trim the list down considerably. Each vote will count as one point, and characters below a certain point threshold get eliminated.

7) Because several characters have the same code name, and because the list includes multiple realities, PLEASE SPECIFY which character you are voting for. I won't make assumptions for votes which don't identify the character clearly. Example, if you vote for:

1) Superman
2) Maya
3) Elongated Man
4) Green Lantern (Pre-Flashpoint)

I'll only count the votes for Maya and Elongated Man. I have no way of knowing if you're voting for JLU Superman vs. Pre Flashpoint Superman, or whether you're voting for Hal, Kyle, Guy or John.

This pre-game round is to allow us to finalize the list of characters for the game. For obvious reasons, once we get past the first couple of rounds we can't just add characters to the list smile If you have any characters/realities you want to add, post here. Because the first rounds usually see massive eliminations, I'll be lenient in allowing characters to be added. The only criterion is the character has to be a member of a JSA-related team; honorary and reserve members are welcome, as are characters closely associated with the Soeciety whose membership is arguable (e.g. some sources would say that Ma Hunkel was never a member, but I think there are enough reasons to ler her in. Others would say that the Shade is a villain and should be excluded, but he has aided the JSA on occasion.)

As of now I have seven different Super-Teams:

Justice Society
Infinity Inc.
All-Star Squadron
SSoSV
Freedom Fighters
Young All-Stars
Squadron of Justice

But I am only including Pre-Flashpoint and Post-Flashpoint versions. The JSA has been through so many retcons Pre-Flashpoint that I think trying to sort through all the versions would be too much work. Instead, I suggest we make our list of characters as inclusive as possible.

My initial list, sorted by the character's "main" team. (let me know if you have comments on the sorting, sometimes I think I should sort by code name instead as so many of these characters were members of multiple teams):

I think you might need to classify them a bit differently, since most of them are Pre-Flashpoint. You might want to put Golden/Silver/Bronze for the DC characters. I would also use the name of the original company for the Pre-Crisis versions of the ones purchased from other companies; as there was little crossover until the Crisis.

I am not sure I want to go and distinguish the Pre Flashpoint versions. Were the characters that different between the Gold, Silver and Bronze?

I am open to it though as we did that for Bat-Villain Idol.

But I will need help determining which characters to split.

There were definite differences between Gold/Silver and the Bronze Age, at least how I define it. Actually forget about ages, just split Pre and Post Crisis creations. That would be a good idea so people know they are looking at a newer character at a glance.

Do you mean split characters who were created Pre Crisis from characters who were created Post Crisis? (i.e. I will mark Cyclone and Lightning as Post Crisis because they were created post 1985, but Ma Hunkel is Pre Crisis because she was created before)

Or do you mean splitting a certain character into Pre Crisis version and Post Crisis version? (i.e. separate entries for Pre Crisis Alan Scott and Post Crisis Alan Scott)?

Yes, when they were created.

I would take out the (Pre-Flashpoint) identifier since most of them are already from that reality and it makes the names too long.

I'm not sure we need this. The point of the identifier is to let us know which version of a character that is, as just indicating real names and code names might not be able to tell us which is which.

Some people might gravitate towards certain characters, but we could just link to Wikipedia to show the dates each one joined the JSA.

Sounds good. I can just leave the Post-Flashpoint identifier, then.

Are you leaving out the Earth-2 Society series characters purposefully?

What is the Earth-2 Society series? Is that different from the New 52 JSA (already on the list)? Could you send me a link to a list, Myg?

Wouldn't it be fair to say that Pre-Crisis Power Girl was different from Post-Crisis? Her origin kept changing constantly. The same goes for any Wonder Woman related characters.

Yes, I was saying that I believe it is a good idea to differentiate versions of the same character (i.e. same real name and same code name) (e.g. Pre Crisis Power Girl and Post Crisis Power Girl) where it makes sense. (what I need help with is deciding which characters to differentiate, and which versions to split them into.)

But I understood your reply as saying I should differentiate different characters by citing the era they were created, because you replied to my example with a YES. And my example cited Cyclone (Maxine Hunkel) and Ma Hunkel, who are definitely different characters.

That is what I don't agree with as it makes the entries far too long. And by including real names, we can easily tell Ma Hunkel apart from Maxine Hunkel.

Sorry, I just wanted to give the simplest answer possible to prevent any arguments (which failed). I'm just going to go with the flow for now on with this game; I'll just vote for the ones I recognize then.

I'm sorry if I seemed argumentative, Emily. I just wanted to understand what you were suggesting, so we can discuss. Again, I agree that it would be good to differentiate versions of a character where it makes sense - but I would need suggestions on which characters to do that for (like your suggestions of Power Girl and Wonder Woman, both of which are very welcome).

I spoke with Emily offline, and she shares that some younger players might not be familiar with many of the characters on the list. Which is a good point. Many of the non-JSAers, such as All Star Squadron members, I do not know.

I'll be adding these to the main list - links to the teams I included.

All-Star Squadron
Freedom Fighters
Infinity Inc.
Justice Society of America
Squadron of Justice
SSoSV / Seven Soldiers of Victory
Young All-Stars

How far into different continuities do we want to go? The Freedom Fighters in Multiversity would be different versions.

What about Elseworlds Versions like in the "Golden Age" Mini.

I'm OK with adding different continuities and Elseworlds versions, but I'm not sure which ones. We can make the list as long as we want, but I would need suggestions. Most characters probably won't survive the first 2-3 rounds anyway.

The Golden Age mini sounds like a good one - some of the characters had very different characterizations there.

I just read up on the Multiversity Freedom fighters, and there are only 7 (?) of them so they would not add much to the list.

I added characters from these two. For Golden Age, I only added those with significant screen time (many others made cameos with few or no lines, so I didn't think there was a point to adding them).

(Elsewords: Golden Age) Americommando (Tex Thompson)
(Elsewords: Golden Age) Atom (Al Pratt)
(Elsewords: Golden Age) Captain Triumph
(Elsewords: Golden Age) Dan the Dyna-Mite
(Elsewords: Golden Age) Green Lantern (Alan Scott)
(Elsewords: Golden Age) Hawkman (Carter Hall)
(Elsewords: Golden Age) Hourman (Rex Tyler)
(Elsewords: Golden Age) Johnny Quick
(Elsewords: Golden Age) Johnny Thunder
(Elsewords: Golden Age) Liberty Belle (Libby Lawrence)
(Elsewords: Golden Age) Manhunter (Paul Kirk)
(Elsewords: Golden Age) Miss America
(Elsewords: Golden Age) Robotman (Robert Crane)
(Elsewords: Golden Age) Starman (Ted Knight)
(Elsewords: Golden Age) Tarantula
(Elsewords: Golden Age) Thunderbolt
(Elsewords: Golden Age) Tigress (Paula Brooks)
(Elsewords: Multiversity) Black Condor
(Elsewords: Multiversity) Doll Man
(Elsewords: Multiversity) Doll Woman
(Elsewords: Multiversity) Human Bomb
(Elsewords: Multiversity) Phantom Lady
(Elsewords: Multiversity) Ray
(Elsewords: Multiversity) Uncle Sam

I'd argue the Earth-S Captain Marvel is significantly different than the one from the post-Zero Hour JSA and should get his own entry in the All-Star Squadron (like Mary and Freddy).

Also, would the Justice Society Infintiy (Post-IC Earth 2) warrant their own entries, or just the unique ones like Hourwoman and the Garret Sandford Sandman?

They only appeared in a couple of stories, I believe. This is the team that showed up when Power Girl vanished after IC, right? And then they kidnapped her and accused her of being their PG's impostor?

I'd include unique ones and the ones with big roles in the stories they appeared in...

... but that might be hard to differentiate. Eh, let's just include all of them.

Can you confirm if This is the team you mean?

Thanks. I've added them to the list.

I wonder, is there also merit in splitting Hector Hall for the "canon"/"main" timeline? I can enter him once as JSA member Doctor Fate, and once as Infinity Inc member Silver Scarab.
