Fame was only born a few years earlier than Bowie, which surprised me when I looked it up. I imagined him as much older, because he belongs to an earlier tradition: more rooted in R&B and "blue eyed" Soul. His biggest hit in his native England was a novelty song called "The Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde." I much prefer his covers of the great Mose Allison, or something undeservedly obscure like "Oliver's Gone." (His instruments are piano, electric piano, and organ.)

I love reading everyone's plans for their fics, but it's frustrating because I just can't make time to rewatch cartoons and do any writing. Not even rewrites.

sigh I still think the mystery I was working on had potential, but it needs a major overhaul. I just can't give it the attention it deserves. shake

I've been slowly writing a novel by working only on the weekends. I started January 16 and have 46 pages. That may seem very slow, but since I write every scene twice (first by hand and then type/revise), I've actually written about twice that much.

I don't have a writing project. However, I have been thinking of doing a family tree for my great niece.

That is another great project. My cousin and I have been thinking of doing that for our extended family. Partly so that I will know more than half the people attending our family reunions...

I actually cut down and uprooted a small evergreen tree over the weekend. It was 5' tall and died suddenly at Winter's end. Not sure why as the weather wasn't that bad.

shrug

At least since it was dead I didn't end up with tree sap all over me. Like the last time I cut down a tree. shake

I'm trying out a Cardoon plant, and possibly some Sunflowers, in its place. This is a peculiar spot, in that it's fully shaded all morning long in Summer. But then the sun absolutely bakes it in the afternoon and early evening. So maybe I can get away with some sun-loving plants here.

That sounds lovely. I know very little about gardening, as our home does not have space for a proper garden. We do have some nice flowering bushes.

Perhaps I should look into having some potted herbs...

Herbs are the best. They're both decorative AND useful in cooking.

Scrambled eggs with a bit of chopped fresh parsley and chive... drool

Fresh tarragon is great in vinaigrette dressing.

I love mixing various flavors as well. Oregano, tarragon and basil together make a great seasoning for grilled shrimp.

Julia Child pronounced oregano as "ore-a-GAH-no", which was amusing.

I love the chapter in Something else else From The Oven that talks about Julia Child. I should read that again. It's been ages.

I have never tried baking, but I imagine I would be a terrible baker. I prefer experimenting with my cooking to following recipes strictly.

So how should oregano be pronounced?

According to this site, http://www.dictionary.com/browse/oregano

Either uh-reg-uh-noh, or aw-reg‐uh-noh is accepted.

I enjoy cooking and baking. Cooking is more of an art, but baking is almost a science. My mother, who can also cook and bake, says that there is room for experimentation in baking, but only after you've mastered the recipe.

The best way to indulge your experimental urges with baking is with stuff like fruit, or with a simple quick bread like (American) biscuits. Both can definitely take different flavorings. In biscuits: herbs, or currants, or a little cheese or crumbled bacon-- any can be mixed in when the dough is made. Baked fruit is great when spiked with a bit of brandy, wine, or with flavored extracts.

Those all sound wonderful. But what I prefer about cooking is that most mistakes can be fixed during the process. With baking, once you pop it into the oven, that's that

Three words about baking failures: Ice Cream Topping.

Or, in the case of a failed pie, just use it as a platform for ice cream.

Failed biscuits are still acceptable buttered and sliced thin before toasting.

I categorically deny that I've ever had a baking failure, though. These tips are only meant for those less perfect than myself.

My very favorite thing to bake would be Toll House Cookies. I don't even look at the recipe any more. They're really easy to make, though I have my own little variations on them. I use two teaspoons of vanilla instead of one and always make sure the trays are out of the oven at nine minutes.
