I guess when I know that English isn't someone's first language, I'm surprised and delighted that he or she knows words like that! I guess it would be similar if I was learning Tagalog and just burst out with a _______ . (Hell, I have no idea what to put in that blank, so hopefully you get the point! wink )

You make an excellent point Lardy! Easier for me because English is my first language. My English vocabulary is far wider than my Tagalog.

Oh, I assumed it was Tagalog! blush

I've seen you converse with others on Facebook in Tagalog, so I just assumed.... blush blush

Aw it's fine Lardy smile I am in a very small minority. See, my folks made English my first language so I would have more opportunities abroad. But I learned Tagalog and national language Filipino (which is supposed to be a composite of various Philippine languages but is overwhelmingly based on Tagalog) from a young age. Still, my English proficiency is far ahead of my Tagalog.

The younger you are the easier it is to learn languages. Scientists have shown that the speech centers of our brains are larger when we are infants.

thoth's last four words in the one word thread - 5 letters, then 4 and now two with 3 letters. Did they say how quickly those language centres shut down? >worried< smile

I wish I had the discipline to follow up on learning languages. I always thought that I could be fluent in both French and Spanish if I really tried.

I often find myself getting my secondary languages, Spanish and German mixed up in my head. For instance, "es" means "is" in Spanish, but "it" in German so I sometimes find using the wrong version when speaking one of the two languages. tongue

I speak enough French and Spanish to get by in a situation where I need to speak them, but am far from fluent. I do get them mixed up sometimes and say things like "un momento, s'il vous plait."

Code switching. We do that all the time here. We have Taglish, a combination of English and Tagalog

In high school a friend made up this "joke"

"I can understand all languages except Greek."

*you then had to ask him to read something in a different language*

He would then say "That's Greek to me."

I love the Amii Stewart disco cover version of "Knock on Wood".

"Knock on wood" reminds me of the Poe story The Premature Burial. It just does! I am not being a Gloompuss! smile

I like Stewart's version AND the older one by Georgie Fame. <3

Fame in his youth was quite the looker. I've always wanted to cast him as a super-villain in one of my stories.

His real name would be David B. Jones, and he would be a young American.
