Is there such a thing?

Our relationship is not going to last if you keep saying things like "Stay out of my bushes!" and "Stop looking in my windows!"

Now I'm imagining Ibby in the music video for "Trapped in the Closet."

"The Celluloid Closet", published in 1981, was one of the first books to deal with both overt and subtextual LGBT themes in the cinema.

My Husband's Lover is one of the first mainstream TV series in the Philippines to feature gay male leads. Even more importantly, the gay men are not the stereotypical loud, cross-dressing, makeup-wearing entertainers or beauticians normally seen.

I remember seeing the film version of "The Celluloid Closet." Really excellent. But how much better has the mainstream movie scene actually become since it was made?

I don't really follow movies so I can't comment. But there have been quite a few films in recent years which have entertained me thoroughly.

I feel like films from outside the U.S. have always been franker in their handling of same-sex attraction than we have.

Perhaps some European films, but not your typical Filipino film. That's why My Husband's Lover was so remarkable. In most mainstream Filipino films, gay men are evil, used for comedic relief, or both.
Independent Filipino films are another matter, but their distribution is very narrow.
And let's not get started on the film industry in most of the rest of Southeast and East Asia...

I'm going to have to search that one out. I haven't been getting to the movies lately as often as I would like.

It's not particularly ground-breaking when measured against the global film industry, though. I should warn you I think the male leads only kissed in the very last episode.

It's nice to see that there is a Filipino series portraying gay relationships positively. From what you've told us about the culture, I'm surprised!
Still "Lardy" to my friends!

Thanks, Lardy It's a start. The Philippine entertainment industry is overwhelmingly LGBT. It didn't hurt that the two leads are attractive and masculine, so a lot of hetero women supported the show too (eye candy is powerful!) Of course, the Catholic Church in the Philippines scrutinized the show, but it was still a good start. I especially loved that a homophobic, womanizing character was diagnosed with HIV because of his adulterous ways. Even more satisfying was that it happened after he went on a rant about gay men spreading HIV everywhere.

The arts always attract LGBT folk. Church music is no exception. I wrote this little ditty to the tune "Aurelia" ("The Church's One Foundation") to that effect:
The church's one musician Is playing the guitar. No one now plays the organ, Nor is there any choir. The minister is right-wing. He said " No queers be here!" Which left him with one straight man Who has no tonal ear.

*claps* What wonderful lyrics, Rocky! So funny too! Blaze had that same observation, when we were talking about local actors who are hounded by gay rumors. It helps that those actors are mostly quite cute

I saw a picture of a protester holding up a sign that read "If God hates gays, why did he make us so cute?"

Some of us are more cute than hot, though some are certainly both.
