Well, I take it that at least part of the name of the location is in Spanish, but so is "Los Angeles".

Maybe we can agree how to proceed with proper nouns, in the future. I don't watch Wheel of Fortune, so I don't know how proper nouns (place names, people names...) are treated on the show.

I have played Hangman games before where the accepted international names are used (I always got hanged at Ljubljana) tongue

I don't want to speak for Paladin but I imagine whether or not the English name for something is used will be determined on a case-by-case, common sense basis.

So, using my example from earlier, the English 'Leaning Tower of Pisa' would probably be acceptable, whereas the Italian 'Torre pendente di Pisa' probably wouldn't be.

Conversely, I imagine the Persian 'Taj Mahal' would be acceptable, whereas the English 'Crown of Palaces' probably wouldn't be.

Mainly because both of the former names are obviously the more internationally recognised versions.

I think Blacula stated this well. I vote we adopt this.

I think "internationally recognised" is also the key term though.

We're obviously posters from all over the world so I don't think it will be really fair if we pick answers that aren't very well known beyond our own locales.

Which I mention because I think I'm going to be surprised if I have ever heard of this 'Destination' IB. wink Or at least (if my suspicion about one of the incomplete words is correct), have seen so many words used to name it.

Well, it's about time to end the round anyway, so I think I can say this smile

The destination contains six words. Four of the words refer to the destination's given, actual name. It should be as acceptable, as, say, "Hiroshima" (a prefecture in Japan), or "Zhejiang" (a province in China), or "Alaska" (a state in the USA), or "Champagne-Ardenne" (administrative region of France), or "Queensland" (a state in Australia), or "Bremen" (a city-state in Germany). As far as I know, this place does not have any readily-translatable name that is commonly used (comparable to your example of the Taj Mahal).

As for how well this place is known, well, I'm not quite sure about that. But based on the vowels in the name, I don't think it will be that hard to guess.

The remaining two words, while a proper name, are also common everyday English words. So, they should not pose a major problem to players.

Round 4 done:

Category: Travel Destinations (each "line" represents one word)

T _ I N
B E A C H
E L
N I D _
P A L A _ A N
P H I L I P P I N E S

Incorrect letters: R, M, Z, G, F

Tally:

EDE (I) - 5
Quis (Z) - 0
Lardy (G) - 0
Kappa (F) - 0

Hm, I'm almost beginning to think this IS too hard, but then, there are only 3 blanks left and EDE's guess of I should illuminate things quite a bit.

So EDE may guess a consonant or solve the puzzle;
everyone else may guess a consonant.

No need to prolong, as EDE has it correct! EDE gets the next puzzle.

Now that we are done, was this puzzle too difficult? I was not worried about "Twin Beach" because they are common English words. As for El Nido, Palawan, that is really the official name of the municipality and province. Guessing the letters in Philippines would also fill in a lot of letters in those words.

Was the place too obscure? A lot of foreigners I know already know this place, so I was thinking it would not be too hard. But that may not be the best gauge...

I can only speak for myself but in my opinion yes, that destination was extremely obscure.

I can't imagine anyone outside Philippines residents, or tourists who have been there, being able to name a single beach in that country.

I also think including the municipality and province of the location added a degree of unnecessary confusion.

It's a bit like putting...

THE STATUE OF LIBERTY
LIBERTY ISLAND
NEW YORK CITY
NEW YORK
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

... when obviously only the first line would and should have been necessary.

Fair enough. Thanks, Blacula. I appreciate the feedback; I will keep that in mind next time I solve a puzzle.

Yeah, I thought it was a bit obscure, but those things can be hard to judge cross-culturally, so no big deal.
