Forrest Compton played Colonel Gray on Gomer Pyle: USMC. He later played Mike Karr on The Edge of Night.

When I was little, I thought that USMC was pronounced "Oo-suh-muh-kuh".

I had a similar experience with an acronym for planning. Goals Objections Missions. I called it "gom"

When acronyms or initialisms are used without explanation to people with whom they are unfamiliar, it can cause confusion and frustration.

It should always be avoided, but sometimes people forget or don't realize it.

When I first saw the band name INXS I thought, "What's an Innx?"

Besides acronyms I also mispronounce certain words. Like renege. I always thought the G was pronounce as a J.

Oddly enough though I guessed the pronunciation of rendezvous because I had heard the word in a movie

I remember it took me awhile before I was able to associate the written words "hors d'oeuvres" with the spoken words, which I was familiar with through tv and movies.

The Mandarin language is even worse. You can't guess how the word is pronounced by looking at how it is written.

English was my first language growing up. I spent quite a bit of time pronouncing Filipino words as if they were English words.

I wish I were fluent in another language. I can manage basic conversations in French and Spanish, but that's about it.

I can manage in Mandarin myself, and that's it. Except of course for Filpino.

I would love to learn some Spanish, French, Japanese and German.

I can get by in reading other Romance languages. I have experience singing German and Latin, though I never seriously studied either language.

My favorite roll is the spicy tuna roll.
