I view peach people with varying degrees of mistrust-annoyance- thinking of them as mentally ill. It depends on how cheerful they are.

I've lived in Texas for 17 years and I'm still put off by the aggressive friendliness. I'm much more comfortable with it than I was when I first arrived, but I'm still taken aback sometimes when I'm in the supermarket and someone randomly approaches me and asks if I need help.

That can depend on the person. Last week a shop assistant told me I was the only polite customer they'd had all morning (admittedly it was early ) But I'm not shy on making it clear to a pushy salesperson to bog off and leave me in peace. Politely, but firmly.

More than a second pause = hang up. 5 seconds into call = interrupt, thank them for their call and then hang up.
Happy to let answering machine field most of it.

I don't pick up myself anymore. I figure if I don't answer a number I don't recognize and it is urgent they can send me a message.

I remember when I first got an answering machine for me phone. I thought I'd really arrived. The first outgoing message I had was a little poem. Now, my voice mail on my cell phone (I haven't had a land line in over ten years) is just very basic.

Twenty years ago, I was floored at the idea of the Internet. Now, it's where I live part of the time.

I'm lucky to never have to get stuck in traffic at the moment. A lot of folks moan about the train, but it could be a lot worse.

They should try the trains here in Manila. That will make them love the trains over there.

They're expanding public transit here in Houston. They have a long way to go, but are making progress.

I was tuned into a more local station by mistake tonight. It said that they were doubling the carriages at certain (peak between you and I) times due to public demand. So, on one hand, they're only doing it when forced. But, on the other hand, it does show that public pressure still works, given enough bad publicity.

Literally in this case. The rail company gave them extra carriages, but they all squeak constantly.

Hope they don't break down. Or overshoot the station and end up on the street like one of ours did recently

One of the problems public transit has here is that Houston has such a car-oriented culture that many people aren't comfortable taking the bus or train. I once heard that Texans would drive to the bathroom if they could figure out how.

People here have become spoiled as well, although it's more because our public transport is just so awful that we don't have much of a choice. Plus, buying and owning a car is relatively cheap.

They put in a ligh rail line about 10 years ago here. They've just added two more lines, with another coming soon. One of the problems in Houston is that the city covers such a large territory and a sizable part of the voting population lives a good distance from the urban core and does not understand its issues.

I read an article about that. The article cited examples of states where the state capital/seat of legislature is NOT the largest city or is not typical of the other cities in the state. This means that the needs of the majority in the state are often not addressed.

Most state capital cities are not the largest city in the state. Boston, Phoenix, Indianapolis, Atlanta, and the like are the exception, not the rule. Most states base it on central location.

Some countries' capitals are also not their largest cities. Myanmar and Australia come to mind
