I figured that was what you meant.

What a terrible attempt at killing this thread. Instead of making it boring, I made it more interesting.

It was a nice twist. Can a thread become too interesting? Could it become so interesting that all the other posters spend a day off doing research just to try to be even more interesting?

We should test that theory. Maybe we should all take a day off to do some research.

There was a short-lived game show around 1980 called Whew!.

It's sounds as though they were relieved they weren't the next round in a crate of snakes.

There was an old comic where the contestants of a game show worked their way around a house like game. The only thing was that if they got questions wrong, lethal traps would be activated. They could have called that "Whew!" The comic was a response to the growing awareness that some people would do pretty much anything on a game show.

I don't swear very much, so I often say things like "Good heavens" and "Oh my goodness". When I'm really upset, I say "Good Lord!"

I have a friend who chastises me whenever I say "Good Luck". According to her, there is no luck as everything is planned by God.

That means you can just hit her for any reason you like, as it's not as though you had any real choice in it.

Ah, Predestination. I'm not a fan of Calvinism.

Calvin of the comic strip was named after John Calvin, the originator of Calvinism.

Hobbes was named after Thomas Hobbes, a proponent of determinism for reasons based physics.

So you get the two main strands of opposition to free will in the title of the comic.

Here in the United States, there is an expectation that if you are not smiling, then you are not friendly or not welcoming. This is probably more true in the South than in the rest of the country. What some people don't understand is that to people from other places, all this smiling does not seem genuine.

This article about peach cultures and coconut cultures sums it up nicely.
