I like the one where she has a signed document testifying that she would not pull the football away. After she, of course, does trick poor Charlie Brown, she comments "Peculiar thing about this document: It was never notarized."

Poor old Charlie Brown.

Charlie Brown was portrayed as about four years old at the beginning of Peanuts. In later years, when an age was given, it was somewhere between eight and nine.

That seems a more realistic age.

The characters' aging was inconsistent. Schroeder and Lucy were originally much younger than Charlie Brown, but were later shown to be his same age. Linus was originally five years older than Sally. Eventually Linus and Sally were about the same age and were maybe a year younger than Charlie Brown and Lucy.

Retcons work in comic strips too!

I prefer comic strips that are slice of life or non-serial ones, like Peanuts and Calvin & Hobbes and Archie. The ones like Spider-Man, Rip Kirby, Dick Tracy, The Phantom seem to take forever to get anywhere.

Rerun, Linus and Lucy's brother, was introduced as a baby and then grew to be about five. In the last few years, he became one of the main characters.

I never read many comic strips with him in it. I sort of remember reading the ones with his birth though.

He was born in 1972. He first appeared about a year later, looking quite a bit like a smaller version of Linus. For the next two decades, Rerun appeared sporadically, usually have adventures on the back of his mother's bicycle. In the '90s, Schulz found a more prominent place for the youngest Van Pelt. It somewhat changed the dynamic of the strip. Lucy softened a bit as she became protective of Rerun. He looked up to Charlie Brown, who became something of a mentor to him.

That must have been good for Charlie Brown's self-esteem.

The feel of Peanuts in the '90s is very different from earlier Peanuts. It's still a lot of fun, but not quite "funny".

Calvin and Hobbes had a nice mix of funny and thought-provoking.

Calvin and Hobbes was great, though I find its creator's writings a bit sanctimonious. He also has written unfavorably about the super-hero genre, which inspired a lot of his best material.

I've found the series to be charming as a whole. I can't say I've read everything though so I might not have chanced upon the ones that are a bit sanctimonious.

In one of the collections, Watterson includes some short essays, many of which are about his creative process, but many are critical of other comic strip artists, particularly those who merchandise their characters.

That also explains why apart from the collected strips in book form, there has been very little Calvin and Hobbes merchandise over the years. About the only other thing I can think of is a calendar.

I guess he had a reason for doing that.

That also explains the severe lack of Hobbes stuffed toys and stories of kids ricocheting out of their front doors with them.

I think he said "artistic integrity". Unfortunately, what it led to was a lot of bootleg Calvin and Hobbes merchandise.

The American Library Association was the first professional organization to have an LGBT interest group, in 1970.
