Carey had a nice run, but I really think Bendis has been far superior. And that's not easy for me to say either, as I loved Carey's Unwritten and Lucifer for Vertigo. Carey wrote perhaps the best Rogue ever, but a lot of his other characters and general larger plots fell short. Bendis, on the other hand, was born to write the original 5 X-Men as teenagers, is the best writer of Kitty Pryde since her earliest days, writes the older Cyclops better than anyone since the early 90's, and does a great job at getting to the real heart of the series. It just "feels" like the X-Men again, and it hasn't since the mid-90's. I enjoy Willow's writing quite a bit. I was one of about 100 people who bought her Mystic miniseries (along with Fat Cramer) when Marvel took a shot at the Crossgen properties, and I loved her Cairo and Air series at Vertigo. Oddly, her Ms. Marvel series has fallen way short for me and I cancelled it. But I wouldn't mind seeing her take. She's doing the adjectiveless X-Men series now, which I dropped some time back since I have no interest in a female-only X-title (or a male only one either). I wonder how she'd do on a non-magical / pseudo-science-based series like thr X-Men. I also wonder how she would do writing strong, masculent male characters (I think she would nail it). So...I guess I need you to broker that deal!

Hey guys, so apparently in Secret Wars, one part of Battleworld is going to be set in Grant Morrison's X-Men era.
Beak and Angel have their mutant powers back, Basilisk is alive, it seems this is going back to the period when mutants were becoming a cultural phenomena. And I'm actually really interested in this because I loved Morrison's run on X-Men.
What I mean by that is I love the sheer depth of characters he introduced into the Xavier School. All those wonderful background characters bursting with potential... until M Day happened.
I'm actually excited about this one, albeit with some hesitation.

It was one of the times that the school was pushed towards some of it's potential.
I hadn't picked up on Battleworld going to different eras, having not read much about the Event. It's sounds awfully like Convergence in having different eras then. Again, based on only a teeny bit of exposure to convergence.

Yeah, as much as I'm looking forward to the Convergence Titans book, this whole thing feels like Blackest Night Vs Necrosha all over again.

Wasn't there something called Identity Disc out at the same time as Identity Crisis?

Yeah, this kinda sucks. Bendis' X-books have been the only readable X-books in like 15 years. For the most part they've been fantastic, with Bendis giving special attention to Kitty & Illyiana, and pretty much restoring Cyclops to greatness after 15 years of being shit on.
I'm dreading who they'll announce next. Just about all Marvel's other main writers feel like nightmare choices for the X-Men. Here's hoping its not Remender, Gillen, Hickman, PAD, Jason Aaron, Ales Kot, even Fraction & Deconnick.
The only real writer that would have me jumping for joy is Mark Waid. I'm actually glad. You're right it has been much better under Bendis but ... I also think it hasn't gone very far, or that the stories take a long time to conclude. A lot of spinning wheels IMO. Maybe its comics today. A two issue story is four. I really liked the recent time travel, new omega mutant story, more for the twists than any novelty. I also thought the Phoenix Five was a cool flip but I just think of Cyclop's team as villains now and Cyclops as an insecure jerk rather than a great. I've never liked him and Emma together, it diminishes them both IMO. Although, he had a great moment in the latest Uncanny X-Men, let's see where it goes from here. where he says he's sorry and gives up his school. that was nice. and i'm glad to see him written unlike a tense psychopath. but ... also exactly what I'm talking about spinning wheels: the big issue end shoe to drop deal was he closed the school?! they have like five students in a bunker. (after everyone had come back from the dead?? Also, despite all the recent attention on Storm and her own book, I'm not into it. Maybe it's me or maybe it's how she's written. The X books have been better but, I think/hope they can go up! I see a great idea in your comment! Kitty and Illyana running two different schools! It might make for more stickiness than Cyclops and Storm or Wolverine and would be nice to graduate these characters and let Storm and Wolverine play in the Avengers or big Marvel crossovers (when Wolverine returns to life). Kitty and Illyana aren't so opposed yet, it makes more sense for Illyana to be bit evil. Rachel's another of my favorites and while she's around, and promoted to professor, she does a lot of standing around like Storm. Cannonball and Sunspot are running Avengers World. (because the bigger heroes are all occupied?) I am kinda into this Uncanny Avengers recent story arc mostly because it is totally a Brotherhood of Evil Mutants line up! I'm not sure what writers I would like to take over, seems like we've got two levels with the big plots and the month to month stories. I'd prefer someone fresh and new maybe. The X Books have kinda avoided the movie pressure so far. I think some of the monthly stories lately have been really interesting. (I think the overall big story arcs not as much ... ) They've been really good about trying new things the past few years. Aaron's Wolvie and the X-Men was forgettable. sadly. I think I'd like to see them back in the city. I also liked Claremont's X-Treme X-Men and the old story drawn by Lenil Yu about the new types of mutants and turf wars when Cable and Jean Grey were on the team. the neo revolution story. It actually fizzled but I like the context. They were in new places, underground etc. The X-Men frankly, might even need to be underdogs or outcasts according to their fundamental identity yet Marvel is purposely making them bigger and more in the mainstream MU.

I could also see a book permanently set in the future (instead of space). By now there are so many interesting characters floating around future and alternate timelines.

Making Iceman gay doesn't make sense. I know there's a contingent of X-fandom that believes Bobby is gay for some reason despite his numerous heterosexual relationships, but this just feels like Bendis attempting to write softcore fan fiction in a published work. The fact that Jean just reads Bobby's mind and flat out tells him that he's gay is uncomfortable to read and is another instance of this version of Jean being an out and out asshole.

I liked her a lot, but nobody has been able to get a good handle on the character since Grant Morrison killed her off.

I gave past Jean a pass because she technically can't be held responsible for the stuff I hold against regular Jean but this, this is just, I want to vomit.

This all just feels like another attempt by Marvel to yell "hey look at me! Check out how cutting edge I am! I'm still relevant!"
Go home Marvel. You're drunk.

In an upcoming issue we'll find that Polaris took profem so she could date Bobby, but never really needed to.

FYI, Dave and anyone else inclined to make Profem jokes, I invariably find them offensive to the point of making my blood boil.

You're welcome, Sarky.
Except for Coagula, I can't think of any examples of 90s DC handling the topic of transwomen well.

I think my joke was that this whole scenario smacks of being just as poorly handled (and the parallels of fan theories that both Jan and Bobby were secretly gay, suddenly being thrust into the books in hamfisted ways). No offence intended.

Oh my God you guys have you been reading the X-Men 92 book for Secret Wars?
It's literally the best X book they have out right now.

Do any of the X-Men books coming out in October look any good? Like, at all?
Because I literally can't tell the difference between any of them and their premises.

Me neither, Sarky. The only positive thing I can say is that Laura looks cute in the yellow spandex. Overall, I don't think Marvel has been this bad since 1996.

Wish I had something positive to add but I agree with you guys, and Fanfie's assessment about how bad Marvel is right now.
I'll try 1-2 X-Men books but I honestly can't even remember the ones I picked. Marvel is effing clueless on how to publish X-Men comics.
