I read an article that thinks Japan has absorbed aspects of "Western" culture that do not mesh well with its traditional values. My adopted home town of Houston is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States, but there is little issue. People seem to embrace it. I always say that you could eat out every night for a month here and never eat the same cuisine twice. I quite enjoy the spices and sauces that come with many Middle Eastern dishes. As for Africa, I have only been able to taste some Morrocan, Egyptian and Ethiopian dishes.
