Thoth, LOL
"Squatting and delivering the next Event." That's such a perfect way to put it.
And the next Event is...I kid you not...Civil War 2.

Because it was so good the first time
Keep up with what I've been watching lately! "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio? Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you."

Trust me, Cleome, you missed nothing worthwhile. Years ago, I had a fanfic fanwank (say that ten times fast) of a What If scenario: What if Civil War had happened circa 1992-1993, which also happens to be my personal Golden Age of Marvel. I'll probably never finish it, but if anyone wants to read what I did manage to write, here's a link: http://www.ninetiesredux.blogspot.com/I still have my notes on file of where it was going, so if anyone's interested in that, send me a PM.

I was interested in the idea. Something else else terrible happens forcing the registration of superheroes. Or rather, something terrible happens, and everyone's vested interests are pushed forward promoting conflict. Those registered would provide a state by state defence.
It's a world with a mutant registration act, a thing for Avengers franchises and a slightly more down to earth approach than DC. So, I was willing to take a look. It didn't take long before it completely fell off a plot cliff. It became unreadable very quickly.

I still haven't read the first one, and I doubt that I ever will. If you ever accidentally ingest poison, please break open the case and read Marvel's Civil War immediately. The projectile vomiting that ensues may just save your life.

Great suggestion, Cobie, I already use Civil War for the other end of my digestive system whenever I need a cleanse.
Why are you laughing at me? It's unkind, as well as puzzling!

OK. I am sick of the Kryptonians, Atlantians, Amazons, and Thanagarians being bad guys. I mean as a group. I don't mind an individual one being the bad guy.
Also, I am tired of massive property damage in superhero movies.

Also, I am tired of massive property damage in superhero movies. I'm with you, Quis. I'm tired of all the arrested-adolescent creators and editors turning every super-powered sentient into either an anti-hero or a villain. It's not big, it's not clever, and it sure as hell is not entertaining. It's just a sad exposition of various human pathologies. I'm not blind to the things that are ugly and twisted about humanity and about life in general. But I think super-hero comics should ideally be about transcending the ugliness and finding all the best qualities and the potential for good within us.

I also agree on both counts.
Sloppy story-telling at its worst. And so, so common.

Years ago, I had a fanfic fanwank (say that ten times fast) of a What If scenario: What if Civil War had happened circa 1992-1993, which also happens to be my personal Golden Age of Marvel. I had a similar notion based around a desire to write up a child of Namor and Sue Storm, in which the Registration Act / Civil War happened soon enough after the appearance of the Fantastic Four that Reed and Sue had not yet married and had kids when Reed sent 'cape-killers' after Sue, Johnny and Ben. In that timeline, their engagement did not survive, and Sue ended up the Queen (and later Queen Mother) of Atlantis, while the Fantastic Four consisted of Sue, Johnny, Ben and Namor for a few years, and Reed went off to become lead scientist of SHIELD, and, eventually, SHIELD director. But that was just my setup to have a future Fantastic Four spin-off team composed of FF kids, led by a son of Namor and Sue Storm. The one thing Civil War could be good for is an impetus for better stories, and some of the Initiative characters, such as Butterball and Reptil and Komodo.

Here's a spookily prescient comic book fanwank for you all: Many months before Superwoman was announced, I wrote a synopsis for a possible Superman Elseworlds fanfic. The plot? Lois and Lana turn out to both be super-powered humanoid aliens like Clark -- specifically, Lois is Ursa, the dark-haired Phantom Zone criminal from the movie "Superman 2," and Lana is Maxima, the red-haired anti-heroine introduced by Roger Stern & George Perez circa 1989, and callously killed off in 2001's "Our Worlds at War Bore" event. So what we eventually get is the catfight to end all catfights, with Lana/Maxima emerging victorious and marrying Clark/Superman and beginning an interplanetary dynasty. So Superwoman #1 came out last week and, whaddyaknow... Lois and Lana BOTH have super-powers now. It's Superwoman-Blue and Superwoman-Red. Spooky.

Sometimes comic book fanwanks can be downright dangerous -- case in point, one time I plotted a fanfic about Superman & Zatanna getting seriously involved with each other despite Supes' sensitivity to magic. They then have a child who could grow up to be either the Messiah or the Anti-Christ.
Well, around this time, I was doing research on Zatanna's backstory, and my computer started freezing and nearly broke down. Which, being superstitious like I am, gave me the feeling that I was unintentionally messing with supernatural forces, and I should not write this story. So I didn't.
