Culture changes fairly quickly at least.

I think the idea of someone choosing not to have children would have been so foreign to his family at that time that they wouldn't understand it. When I was in my 20s, I told my grandmother (she was from the old-a-country) that I didn't plan on having children and she told me everyone should have at least one or two.

That attitude is still very common in Asia.

It's common in a lot of cultures.

My mother told me that when she was in her twenties and already had children, she met a woman who said she and her husband had decided not to have children. Her first thought was that they were selfish. Years later, she said that, although she had always loved children and wanted to have them, she realized that not everyone felt that way.

Some people think that they should not have children because they cannot take good care of them. I think that's the opposite of selfish.

Look no further than the news as proof that not everyone should have children.

Not all children are terrible.

I've known a great many wonderful kids and a great many who annoy me. Not unlike adults, really.

I was referring to the parents.

That reminds me of the first line of Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy:
"I wish either my father or my mother, or indeed both of them, as they were in duty both equally bound to it, had minded what they were about when they begot me."

It takes two to tango.

The tango hadn't been invented yet. It first appeared in the 1890s. Shandy was published between 1759 and 1767.

I could use some shandy right now.

A rather oddly named drink, in my opinion, but so are punch and squash.

I always found "cobbler" an odd name for a pastry. Move one of the letters around and it becomes "clobber." There's also the similarity to the word "cobblestone".

Cobblers make me think of shoes.

Clobbers make me think of Things.

Odd as the name may be, a good peach cobbler is yummy.

Peach is my favorite fruit.

If I had to pick one, it would probably be pineapple.

I'm rather fond of kiwis myself.

I like pineapple. Also strawberries.

Years ago, there was a brand of fruit-flavored drink mixes called "Funny Face". Each flavor had a character, such as "Freckle-Face Strawberry".

There was also a short-lived funny-faced sandwich cookie called "Giggles".

I used to eat a lot of open-faced sandwiches. These days I just omit the bread.
