I saw the Hope Diamond at the Smithsonian. Of course being a Chinese major, I have to point out the beauty of jade (which is actually jadeite or nephrite).

I've got a great-looking jade pendant. Doubt it's all that valuable, but it looks cool.
I also once had a large and beautiful jade plant that I'd raised from infancy. Then it met up with the older of my two cats and it was bye-bye, Plant.

If I were rich-er, I would buy an opal ring.

I'm fond of Jade, as well as her brother, Obsidian.

An interesting article about synthetic diamonds. Cubic Zirconium and Moissanite are two popular varieties, but gems can also be created in a lab using pure carbon. ...The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) recognizes these as real diamonds from a compositional perspective. But, the man-made diamonds don't have the rich geological history that natural diamonds do. Laboratories simulate the heat and pressure from the Earth's mantle that create natural diamonds. For the synthetic manufacturers and the consumers, diamonds come down to a matter of time and money: days versus millions of years, thousands of dollars versus tens of thousands of dollars or more (man-made diamonds sell for about 30 percent less than natural ones) [source: MSN]. If you want a uniquely colored, relatively inexpensive diamond (it will cost less than a natural colored diamond), you can find man-made ones in shades of orange, yellow, pink and blue. Finding a large diamond will prove a greater challenge -- most man-made diamonds weigh less than one carat...

Ooh, I used to work in an antique jewelry store. Black opals are my favorite. Such a wide array of colors!

VL, is that you in the dark glasses? ... aaaanyway... Roman Gemstones by MuseumWales , on Flickr ...These Roman gemstones were lost during the period between AD 75 and AD 230. This remarkable collection of 88 gems (one of the largest single deposits to be found anywhere in Roman Empire) were found in the sediments of a large drain beneath the cold hall of the baths. They would have originally been set in finger-rings. Most belonged to the legionary soldiers, but some may have been lost by the civilians and women who were also admitted to the baths...

Wow, cleaning drains in Roman bathhouses looks to be a profitable endeavor! And to think, I assumed losing your ring down the sink was a modern day dilemna!
Gem Girl's got some scary stirrups going on there... Does she ride a rhinestone pony or something?
Poor Toymaster! He can't even afford a pair of pants to cover up his dangling red sack, and has turned to a life of crime, and this woman dripping in priceless jewels is about to put him in the big house! Such oppression!
I'm not exactly clear how the shiny red toy wrecking ball knocked down purple-skinned exposed-brain-having Damsel-in-Distress Dude...

Somewhere, Bob Mackie is crying because he didn't think up that Gem Girl costume first.

Peridot is my birth stone, but I'd really prefer just about any other month's gem, since I don't like the olive green colour. But it's properties are interesting: Peridot is said to host magical powers and healing properties to protect against nightmares and to bring the wearer power, influence, and a wonderful year. As peridot is a gemstone that forms deep inside the Earth and brought to the surface by volcanoes, in Hawaii, peridot symbolizes the tears of Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes. from American Gem Society

On another forum, I put the Silmarils in my signature. I got to remember to do something similar here.
