Are there any countries in Asia that offer same sex couples marriage rights?

People said it would never happen in Texas and it looks like, despite the rhetoric of some of our politicians, that it will be legal here by the end of the year.

Well, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals will return their judgment soon, which is expected to legalize same-sex marriage in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi. The Supreme Court will rule in June, more than likely legalizing it throughout the United States.

Are there any countries in Asia that offer same sex couples marriage rights? Pretty sure that is currently a NO unless you count New Zealand and Australia. Asia is quite conservative.

Even though it is legal wherever I am, I read this story about a guy dying in a state where it is not legal and the couple having all sorts of problems ... probably a very specific set of errors but ... still .... i'm glad i won't have to be worrying about which state i die in now. i did not apply to a couple of jobs in one state that didn't have same sex marriage rights though. the scales didn't balance on that one.

I've been there, and the "man on the street" seems pretty accepting. I've read/heard that it's due to their spiritual beliefs - gay sex/love is one of those things in the physical world, and as long as done in moderation it is okay.
Malaysia, Indonesia and especially Brunei are on the other end of the skill. Brunei has recently implemented Sharia law, while Indonesia and Malaysia are both Muslim majority countries. Singapore is quite strict as well.
The Philippines falls somewhere in the middle. Homosexuality is not illegal per se, but society frowns on it.

I imagine that Japan has been influenced by the West more than most and would probably accept same-sex marriage before most other countries in the region.

I'm not so sure. In Japan, there still seems to be a prevalent view that to contribute to society, one needs to start a family.

That's true, but that was also true in most Western nations until the last several decades.

I think this leaves only Georgia and North Dakota as the only states where it is neither legal nor in a pending legal case.

Utah was the one that really surprised me. I think it was the turning point. When it became legal in Utah, we knew it could be legal everywhere in the country.

As you mentioned, there IS always hope And I have to agree, Japan is one of the Asian countries that seems more likely to make the leap. I think Thailand may be another country to watch out for.

Technically, one country in Asia, Israel, already recognizes, though does not perform same-sex marriages. Of course it's quite a distance from the other countries we've discussed.

I do find it fascinating because I always imagined Israel to be a very conservative Jewish country.

Like Judaism in general, Israel is a mix of liberal and conservative.

For that matter there is a great diversity within Christianity and within sects of Christianity. In the US, the media has a tendency to use the word "Christian" to mean "conservative Evangelical", which is, of course, not the entire picture.

In any group it's not the folks who want to coexist peacefully with others who make headlines. It's the crazies who blow things up and kill people that we hear about.
