When kids who lived outside the original Peanuts neighborhood started to be introduced, they didn't always understand what was going on. Peppermint Patty thought Snoopy was a funny-looking kid with a big nose. Franklin thought Lucy's psychiatric booth was a lemonade stand ("Are you a real doctor?" "Was the lemonade ever any good?"). Eventually, visitors came to understand, but Peppermint Patty, Marcie, and Franklin always lived in a slightly more realistic world.

True. One can almost imagine the "core" Peanuts world as being kind of like the town of Leesburg from Peter David's Supergirl, minus the creepier aspects.

Franklin was certainly a lot more well-adjusted than many of the earlier cast members.

Franklin's introduction was notable for its ordinariness. Charlie Brown was at the beach and he made friends with Franklin whose family was also there. They built a sandcastle together and Charlie Brown invited him to visit him some time.
When he did make it to Charlie Brown's neighborhood, he was met with Lucy in the aforementioned booth, Snoopy as the World War I Flying Ace and Linus telling him about the Great Pumpkin. His response to Charlie Brown "I didn't mind the girl in the booth or the beagle with the goggles, but that business about the 'Great Pumpkin'...No, sir!"
When Charlie Brown tried to explain, he was interrupted by Schroeder asking if they knew there were only sixty more days till Beethoven's birthday.

That was hilarious! And then Charlie Brown says, "Oh, good grief," and Franklin says, sarcastically, "Like, wow!"

There was a much later sequence where Snoopy and the birds are playing Foreign Legion and they fire a cannon, which takes off the roof of Snoopy's doghouse and the top of Lucy's booth before landing on Schroeder's piano.

Oh, the mayhem. I'm sure Lucy and Schroeder freaked.

As I recall, Lucy ducked and Schroeder just stared at the cannon ball.

I think Schroeder would have been more affected by the loss of his piano than Lucy would have been at the loss of her booth.

According to at least one strip, he has a closet full of them. On other occasions, he's had to order a new one from the Ace Piano Company.

Unlike Linus, who if I remember correctly only has one blanket.

Not quite. There was a very funny story where Linus tried to give up his blanket by giving it to Snoopy for safekeeping, only for Snoopy to turn the blanket into sport coats for himself and Woodstock. Linus eventually learns to function without the blanket, only for Charlie Brown to shove a brand new blanket into his hands, thus accidentally beginning the cycle again.

There was one sequence in the mid-'60s where Linus' blanket somehow achieved sentience and attacked Lucy, who fled from the house and collpsed on the ground in front of Charlie Brown, begging him to protect her from the blanket. CB commented that he never expected Lucy to be the first in their group to go insane.

Must be all the crabbiness. Thanks for sharing these stories about Linus' blanket. I used to have a favorite blanket, but not for security. I just liked it because it was comfy.

I recommend the graphic novel Blankets by Craig Thompson. I read it last fall for a discussion group. Quite good!

It's hard to find other people who like to read here. I myself have trouble finding time to read.

I work in a consulting company, so I have a lot of time required for reading. Just not always the things I want to read

Sometimes, when people hear that I'm a librarian, they say things like how they'd love my job because they love to read. Loving to read is a good quality for a librarian to have, but there is very little reading on the job. I'd rather hear "I like working with people and information" in an interview than "I love to read".

If a librarian spent all his or her time reading... very little would get done.

John Donne was dean of St. Paul's Cathedral, London, from 1621 till his death in 1631. He is best remembered for his poetry and writings. His best-known lines are from Meditation XVII from Devotions upon Emergent Occasions:
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

I work in a library and find it hard to find time to read. Because you work with... Rex Libris: Action Librarian

Gulp!
I hope Rocky doesn't find out about that book I lost 5 years ago.
