Not until the naming requirement is dropped. Otherwise we'll have something like "Flight Girl" or "Angel Lass".

Or, to quote someone she was hunting (v4, #3? Mordru's drone-spies), "Red Witch"
The childhood friend Exnihil never had.

It's OK, Dawnstar can still be her name but she'll be on the roster as Icarus Kid or Fly Girl or whatever.
Dawny as Angel Lass? I could probably live with as long as she could...until the day she blows up at Cos and demands her name back. -heh- it might be worth it just for a scene with a good old fashioned Dawnstar style butt chewing. The girl did have an attitude at times.

You saw her as having an attitude? You didn't have to grow up with her! ... Come to think of it, neither did I, really ("Who's Who in the LSH" 1). The name ritual will come back to bite Waid et al., if it's used in the stories to push aside or exclude talents, and I think it'll be quietly forgotten about fairly soon. I hope they don't settle on Angel Lass or the like, when (not if!) she returns, because that's become the default word for winged humanoids, and it's misleading. "Angel" has religious meanings that aren't at all required for depicting winged folk, but we have no other compact word available in popular culture for describing them. I saw "seraph" being used in fan fiction elsewhere recently, and although that also has religious links, they're fewer and far less well known. Icarus Kid? He didn't make the cosmic cut, in the classic Greek legends. Too much hubris for his own good, they said. I never liked that, and prefer (along with Ruth Thompson ) to contemplate his success bringing about "The Daughter of Icarus" ... ![[Linked Image]](http://home.earthlink.net/~greybird007/webimg/thompson-daughtericarus.jpg)

I was just throwing out ideas, neither of which I thought sounded good. They were actually examples of the sort of names that I think wouldn't work. Then again, there's always Hawkgirl, which ties into the 21st Century and suggests flight with wings. But that just might lead to her being Thanagarian rather than from Starhaven. Or it could be that Starhaven is a Thanagarian colony who genetically altered themselves to have real wings rather than the mechanical type.

Oh, and another point about the "angel" convention probably has to do with the way the wings are attached. Angels are typically shown as humans with wings on their backs. In contrast, birds have wings instead of arms. Insects have both arms and wings, but do we really want to go there with Dawnstar? (Unless you think that's Shikari.)

Dawnstar has to remain Dawnstar. Like the ad says, there's nothing like the real thing. In this case only the original (w/wings) will be satisfying. As to her being from Thanaga - or of Thanagarian descent - NO WAY! Her Starhaven origin is part of her mystique. If I wanted to read about a character named Angel/Archangel, I'd go back to reading X-Men (so boring now). In plain terms: DON'T YOU DARE change her name@

I've always been kind of annoyed by Dawnstar's lack of an actual codename. I wouldn't mind her going by some variation of the "Bounty" name (Bounty Kid/Lass/Girl?), as long as it's her, rather than some entity possessing her.

Venus Girl has been used in fanfic (Scott Johnson's and my own.) I think it makes sense as it blends with other names like Saturn Girl, and the dawn star does have to do with Venus, right?

Code-names are okay, but not necessary, in my book.

I think Dawnstar and Blok were the only two Legionnaires without code names.

I started to mention Quislet but then it ocurred to me that he probably has some different tag in his home universe so I suppose that would make Quislet his codename afterall wouldn't it?
Kent Shakespeare didn't get "Impulse" until just before Zero Hour and but then Waid gave it to some other hotshot kid...but then there's Projectra who went by her real name and rank until she became Sensor Girl.
I think you may be right there Ferro...oh wait...we forgot Tellus!

If those were my options, I'd go with Tellus too.
