No you won't. smile Spy Smasher it was.

She wrote a bunch of old Whiz Comics characters but he seems to be the only one that was bought by DC.

Over to you TK.

Wheee! I was trying to remember the old JLA crossover with the Fawcett characters. I figure DC at least owned those ones. It was Mr Scarlet and Pinky next smile

I read that Highsmith had not kept any of her links to her comics work. The impression was given that it was due to poor opinion people had of comics of the time.

I've not read any of the Ripley books, but the Highsmith article said there were parallels to them and certain well known comics characters.

So people might have stayed away in droves if they had known of Highsmith's previous work due to snobbery. But they love the work when they don't know about the connections.

Remember kids, snobbery is bad. We have a strict No Snobs Allowed policy at Club Snooty, my elitist jodhpurs wearing social club.

Look! Crossing the event horizon! It's a new question, coming sooooon...

Hawkman and Hawkwoman missed out on the Crisis and Legends because they were off fighting a Shadow War. Why couldn't they tell anyone about it?

No. They even came back to beat up the JLA in issue #3

They were certainly secretive about it, but not because they were sworn to be so.

Because they were fighting fellow Thanagarians and didn't want to start an interplanetary war?

Waitiaminnit -- were Hawkman and Hawkwoman not present during "Crisis?"

Just going by the nature of the question, if they were somewhere else during "Crisis," could it be that they actually remembered the pre-Crisis DCU and didn't want to freak everyone out that the universe had been changed? (no wonder their continuity was so screwed up...)

OR - wait.... If post-crisis Hawkman and HawkWOMAN were from "Hawkworld" continuity, then they hadn't even been to earth yet. (from what I kinda remember from early post-crisis continuity) And even if the pre-Crisis Hawks appeared in the series, there was still a post-Crisis "Crisis" that everyone remembered, but it was different from what we saw in the comic. Is that the "Crisis" that they missed? Well, either way, I am going to go with,"Nobody would believe them even if they told them" as their reason.

Ibby's fairly close. The Hawks were indeed fighting Thanagarians and they didn't want to start an interplanetary war. But they didn't just call in the JLA, as the enemy had access to what Hawk-tek?

The Hawks had the luxury of their own series, but utterly missed the biggest DC Event because of this plot. Likewise, they missed Legends because of it too. They appeared briefly in the JLI, quite a bit after Crisis, only to get themselves retconned with Hawkworld. As many know Hawkworld was supposed to be a Year One story, but DC editorial decided to make it current, trashing a lot of pre, and post, Hawkman continuity. Oh and Hawkgirl got to miss JLA #200 because of another plot... The Hawks have a very poor sense of timing.

I wonder... The timing makes sense that they'd miss it, but I recall a panel in Crisis 9 page 20 where Superman is fighting Starro. In the background is someone who looks like the Earth-1 Hawkman.

Then in issue 10 page 8, we have Hawkwoman and Tin ganging up on some villain I don't recognize.

At least, I think it's them smile They were on Earth-S, the Earth assigned to the JLA and the Metal Men.

Have to agree about Hawkwoman missing JLA 200 though. That was just silly of DC, to give their heroine such poor timing.

They had an Absorbascon, which is also the name of a popular blog.

And Emily has it. Their enemies had the Absorbascon, meaning they could read the minds of everyone on the planet, except the Hawks.

So, to protect their plans the Hawks kept away from all the other heroes.

As for the Crisis, a single background image (more Perez trying to draw everyone in the series, rather than anything remotely in the plot) is very short shrift. I even thought the Hawkman was the Earth-2 version, assuming he hadn't be crippled by that point.

There's a good idea in the Shadow War and one good issue in there. In the end, it marginalised the characters for quite a while, coinciding with huge changes in the DCU.

Note how the Matrix would also take the idea of being able to monitor everyone's mind on the planet to track people down...

Over to you Emily!

Ah, that's what you meant by missing Crisis. Yeah, the Hawks probably got limited exposure there because of other events. (Hal Jordan pretty much didn't appear too!)

Yeah, Jordan was another one notable by his absence. I didn't see anything of Jordan, outside of JLA back issues, until a group of them settled on Earth. Then there were far too many of them.

At least the Atom popped up in the Red Tornado sub plot.

I am so happy for this victory. It would be fitting for me to start with a Fawcett Comics question, so here it goes:

Who was the main villain/ness who debuted in Mary Marvel #1?

I don't think Hal appeared at all in Crisis - not even in a single panel. Oh well.

Atom was luckier. Besides showing up for Red Tornado, he also had the honor of freeing Captain Marvel so the big red cheese could join the fight on Earth-S.

He was part of the Crisis during the Green Lantern tie in issues. He actually got reinstated in the Green Lantern Corps after Tomar-Re died.

Ah, thanks for pointing that out, Braal Janitor! (once you hit 100 posts, you can pick your official nickname tongue kidding). I was actually looking for him in the main series; I haven't read most of the tie in issues. I just found his absence glaring, especially since tons of other GLs appeared (mostly for a few panels, but still!) in the main Crisis series.

Not the Darkling, this is a Golden Age comic.

If anyone wants to look later, a few comic book sites host Fawcett issues under the claim that somebody forgot to maintain the copyright on some individual issues.
