Well, with DC it was the New 52. I just... couldn't anymore. I mean, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with retcons. (I'm a big fan of the sensible ones, actually.) I just thought it was lazy storytelling and all the Crises and I just couldn't take it anymore. I read some of the "Justice League Dark" for my girl Zatanna and Constantine but even that went by the wayside eventually.
With Marvel, I more fell behind in my books and then was not feeling as motivated and just... started reading books instead? I loved books growing up - ironically, comics were something I found when I was a bit older (college age-ish). But yeah. I'm not entirely sure how it all happened!

I think you'll find that a lot of us here at Legion World have found in the New 52 a reason to stop buying DC altogether.
As far as Marvel, I don't buy any of their floppies, but I am going to buy the Black Widow and All-New X-Factor trades due in July. Also the Velvet trade from Image.
I think I speak for everybody who participates in the Re-Reads thread that we'd love to see you there, even if it's just to chime in about the good times. And it so happens I'm going to start a re-read of Peter David's Young Justice in a week or two.

OMG. YOUNG JUSTICE! Duuuude. I loved that one. I remember this one scene where Robin's shadow is shaped like Batman - I lulzed! I was really enjoying the Hawkeye series when I sort of fell off in my reading. And, um... there were a few others. But that one in particular. And Morning Glories! I think that one's also Image. Mayhap I will visit in time. I'm easing my way back into LW life.

Take all the time you need to finish easing back into LW life, sweetie.
Young Justice was such a wonderful series in so many ways, but one thing that's occurred to me recently about it is that it really did capture the anything-goes spirit of the best of the Silver Age, but without being the least bit retro.

Ooh, that's a good point. PAD is really good at that, I think.

I never really followed it, but I have a copy of the two-parter where YJ leads dozens of young heroes into Zandia to get the guy who killed Empress' parents. That was a lot of fun! Not just the fighting, but the playful banter. Zan and Jayna eating CDs, everyone wanting to ride shotgun and giving each other lip, and the big BBQ cookout before they charge into Zandia. Good times, and they make being a hero fun! A lot of comics miss out on that nowadays.

You might wanna check out Justice League Idol, where your girl Zatanna is doing pretty well

Yessss! That was great! (Zandia is such a weird, weird place.) Empress was such an interesting character. I really liked her but hated that her inclusion came at the expense of Arrowette. Unfortunately, her story was told in such a way that her hero days were definitively done at the end of the "Dark Arrowette" arc. (Except for a random cameo here and there.) I was glad she stayed friends with the others, though. And Impulse's thought bubbles! Those were awesome.

Cali, this is amazing. That's exactly how I feel about Empress and Arrowette. I'll admit do feel a bit guilty about it, since Empress was the only team member who was 100% PAD's creation.
Ibby, I totally agree that modern comics miss out on the fun aspects of being a hero.

Yeah, it was a bit sad that Arrowette retired completely. It makes some sense I guess, but I was hoping there'd come a time when she felt she really needed to don her costume again. Unfortunately, she missed out on even the Zandia invasion - though her mom took her place.
I liked Empress too, and wished both she and Arrowette could have been teammates.
Impulse's thought bubbles! Always hilarious.
Yes Fanfie, I think that's why I prefer DC to Marvel. DC (at least in the past, and in general) was more optimistic and highlighted the fun. Marvel was full of heroes being hated and vilified.

Now DC and Marvel have almost reversed places! What a crazy world!
Much as I liked Arrowette and Empress, my favorite of the female Young Justicers was Wonder Girl. I really liked Secret, too.

Secret! She was so interesting. I thought it was funny they named her "Susie" - it was such a random name. Arrowette's my fave, hands down. She didn't have any stuff with guys, which I thought was a nice change of pace (I mean, I get why Wonder Girl and Secret both had their crushes but it's nice when a teen girl has other stuff happening) and I'd already loved on her from Impulse's series. Oh, and the Olympics thing was pretty awesome, too. One note about Empress: I was glad to see a non-white character but it's always sad to me when you have to create a new one because there are none in existence to draw on. But she was pretty awesome! Especially doing naked stuff. >.> I mean what? I thought it was fun how Red Tornado became their guardian/adult person, too. And his daughter! She was a cutie. I remember this one issue where all the teams are doing stuff - JLA, JSA, YJ, Titans, etc. etc. and some of the adults are like, "I want to be a member of Young Justice." "Me too!" (I feel like one of them was Jay Garrick, but I'm not sure.) Also, Lagoon Boy! I don't think I ever heard of him before YJ. And he was sooo adorable. Love him. (He might've been part of the fill-in YJ team? I can't recall now...) Man. We should just rename this thread for YJ! I could go on for days...

Man. We should just rename this thread for YJ! I could go on for days... It gladdens my heart to see someone else here at Legion World sharing my enthusiasm for YJ. I hope you'll keep contributing your thoughts once the re-read in Gy'mll's starts next week.

Secret was great! And I love Cassie. I think she's easily the most mature and balanced of the YJ kids. Even though she has her share of drama, she's dealt with it quite well.

Cassie was a great, especially as leader. Man, though - they really did some weird stuff to her character in 52.

Oh, post-YJ Cassie has been a disaster. Don't even get me started on DCFU Cassie -- I ask you, turning the ultimate girl-next-door into a juvenile deliquent??

Sad face. I did enjoy her on Teen Titans before 52, though. Ares was all creeper-y with her - it was kinda fun!

I haven't re-read the Johns/McKone issues of Teen Titans in years. The last time I tried, I got to the part where Deathstroke blows off Bart's kneecap, and I thought, "Why am I reading this, exactly?" Yeah, sorry to say, I've fallen out of love with Johns' writing, to put it mildly. Some time ago in the Random Review thread, I described my reader/author relationship with Johns as a love affair gone sour. Sigh. On a brighter note, I love the new status above your avatar, Cali.

Thought you'd like that! I haven't read Johns/DC in such a long time that I don't know how I'd feel about it now. I will say that I appreciated some of the storytelling stuff that went with Bart's injury, though - his healing too fast and medication didn't work. It made me wonder what pain is like for someone who used to live in virtual reality, you know? And it definitely helped lead to the big JLA/Teen Titans confrontation in #6, where Nightwing owned everyone so hard I fell in love all over again.

Hmmm...I do love me some well-written Nightwing. I might give those early issues another go. Thanks, Cali.

Hee. It was #6, I think? And Bart quotes... I want to say Oscar Wilde to Wally. It made me squee.

Oscar Wilde? Now I've got this image of Geoff Johns and James Robinson acting out the Smiths song "Cemetry Gates".
A dreaded sunny day So let's go where we're happy And I'll meet you at the cemetry gates Keats and Yeats are on your side While Wilde is on mine

It was a good quote, that's what I remember most. (I suspect that would be an embarrassing karoke night - and I'm loving the mental image.)

I put an offer on a condo today and it was accepted! If all goes according to plan, I will shortly be a homeowner! Well, condo-owner. BUT STILL! I'm not sure if I want to scream with joy or terror.
