His original costume looks really slick when drawn right but it is easy to draw it looking really bland. I like the streamlined oily black and v-neck Did Mr Fantastic ever look so cooooool? I think not.

This would also have been a cool League also. (Ralph went from Satellite glory days, to Detroit, to JLE ... effortlessly.

Doing these "campaign or tribute" threads reminds of how rarely great some of these characters were.
Meaning, The Booster Beetle Friendship, Ralph and Sue's wonderful relationship and Katar and Shayera's surprisingly adult relationship ... for example when the Hawks were having marital problems and went on separate vacations. IIRC.
There's some great relationship stuff written in the League's past, specifically marriage and married heroes and friendship.
During the JLE, Ralph and Wally identified and were friends over their history and the bygone era. Funny uncle Ralph and impetuous Wally.
good nutritious stories. meaty and well rounded.

Ralph was always balls out brave too, even amongst the super gods like Wonder Woman and Superman he had buoyant and irrepressible spirit and joy for super heroing.

Woo! Byrne drawing Cosmic Boy? Great looking Firestorm and Vixen and Steel, too! And then there's Vibe, in an awkward 'check me out, girlfriend' sort of pose...

One thing I didn't like was when they pulled a Plastic Man on Ralph. He stretched. He couldn't reshape his body.

I don't mind the stretchy eye thing, that's cool but the bouncing ball bottom ... is a stretch.

There's this one great scene with Ralph that must have been in one of the first JLA comics I ever read. He stretches himself to limit (passing out I believe?) in order to catch someone. Anyway, it definitely made an impression on me as a kid.

I don't like the stretchy eye thing (mainly because it always looks so gross), but I prefer it to the beach ball, and every other Plastic Man-like shape artists sometimes depict him in. I agree with Quis - that's not his power!
P.S. Love Ralph. He had a great scene in JLofA #200 too - saving Hawkman. I also prefer his red and black costume to all of his other costumes before and since, especially his hideous purple one. The lavender/white with the "Em" on it has grown on me though.

Anyway, it definitely made an impression on me as a kid. I think that's the scene from JLofA #200 that I just mentioned. Adam Strange zeta-beams an unconscious Hawkman into space near the JLA satellite and Ralph has to stretch to his absolute limit to reach him and bring him on board. I think I remember some great Conway writing about the airlock being like a tomb. Ralph was a much more serious and heroic character pre-Crisis. In fact, one thing the JLA Idol game has made me realise is just how different so many members were between their pre and post Crisis depictions. Green Arrow and Elongated Man being two of the most obvious ones IMO.

That's probably what I'm thinking of, though I'm surprised I didn't remember it being there considering I've read that issue relatively recently!

There was a Brave & Bold issue where Ralph & Bats are investigating a series of murders. Batman chided Ralph for making light of the murders. Ralph cites Byron to Batman, who looks it up and finds this quote “And if I laugh at any mortal thing, 'Tis that I may not weep.”

Was that the fantastic issue that had the Hangman using Ralph as a noose to hang Batman with on the cover? Great issue if so. And one of the only "play fair" murder mysteries I've ever read in comic form. Ralph and Bats have to solve a series of murders and the clue to the killer's identity is actually something the readers can decipher using the same visual clues Ralph and Bats do. Love that sort of creativity in a comic. Here it is if anyone's interested - http://www.comics.org/issue/35527/cover/4/

That's the awesome scene I was thinking of. I think the next page displays more of his heroism and desperation though.

I don't mind the stretchy eye thing, that's cool but the bouncing ball bottom ... is a stretch. In the Super Friends issue that introduced the future Global Guardians, he and Godiva had to defuse a bomb surrounded by a field that would kill anyone who came near it. Naturally, they did so by stretching their hair to reach the bomb! Whacky fun awesomeness.

The watch bit at the end was great.

Agreed about this completely. I breezed through the Satellite Era in a couple of comics-reading binges, but the Idol game and our recent discussions made me realize that as well. For Ralph at least, and maybe some others, I don't think his continuity or history was changed at all by the Crisis. I guess it was just different writers with a different take on the character. Here's Ralph fighting Barry in the same issue, JLA 200: http://comicsauthorityblog.files.wo...ngated-man-and-flash.jpg?w=492&h=731

I don't like the stretchy eye thing (mainly because it always looks so gross)... I'll need to keep an eye out to make sure no others appear. Oops.
