Okay, here's the skinny. Byrne will not be drawing that arc on The Legion. Wizard supposedly jumped the gun (imagine that) and made an announcement before everything was ready to go. As of right now he will not be doing that 4 issue arc.
And, there is also no set in stone plans for Gail to do the arc either. She had plans for a four issue arc with John but he declined. She may or may not do the issues with another artist.

Can't say I'm sorry that Byrne won't be around.

MARK WAID/BARRY KITSON Nothing has been officially confirmed, but rumor has it that the popular Empire creative tag team of Mark Waid and Barry Kitson have signed on for another DC project - only this time, the duo will tackle an established DC property. More details to come!

Byrne's MB is the biggest pain in the ass to access, even worse than the DCMB and you know that's saying a lot. I had to give a reason and my real name to sign up to even see posts let alone make posts. But the person who runs the board for John and speaks for him from what I can tell passed the information along to me. I didn't even get into the Waid/Kitson rumors with them.
And they've already locked up the thread I've started. Apparently they do not like speculation there and with me asking if the quote from Wizard was true and Linda verifying it wasn't the regular posters started to toss out other titles that he may be taking up. Boom. Topic closed only to be reopened by John himself if he wants to comment.

Okay, not only did they lock down my thread they've totally deleted it. What a way to make a newcomer feel welcome.

How should we interpret that then... being that we are rabid Comic Book/Legion fans, aren't we now required to speculate rampantly about what that thread deletion means or could mean?
1. Possible interpretation is that JB is doing the Legion Arc, and feels that it is premature to talk about it.
2. JB doesn't like the Legion and wants no references to it on his board.
3. JB doesn't like new posters or maybe he just doesn't like Lightning Lad.
4. The Grinch took over JB's board and hasn't quite heard the Hoos singing down in Hooville yet.
I'm open to other interpretations too...

You are not too far off with #2. JB does not like the Legion and doesn't care who knows. I totally believe that he didn't want to do the book.
And I don't think it just the Legion that he doesn't allow speculation on. The board, to me through a quick browsing, seems to frown on any speculation of what his next projects are until officially announced.

The board, to me through a quick browsing, seems to frown on any speculation of what his next projects are until officially announced. Sort of takes some of the fun out of being a John Byrne fan, eh? I mean, from time immemorial, speculation has been on the the favorite games of fans. One wonders, given such an iron grip on posting as you descibe, why Byrne bothers to host a message board at all. Oh, well. As Byrne goes. LOVED his FF, and most everything his did pre-FF. LOVED is Alpha Flight. Missed out on Next Men. Although I have picked up some back issues, I have not yet collected enough to be able to give any thoughtful reading. I have disliked most everything he has done recently. Exception being X-MEN HIDDEN YEARS. I did love his BATMAN/CAPTAIN AMERICA, likes GENERATIONS I, was luke warm on II, and did not think much of III at all. I have not been a fan of his art style in recent years. I think is storytelling is a strong as it ever was, but I don;t think much of his "magic marker" inking style. The upcoming JLA stuff with Ordway inking looks nice. As far as speculating goes, I have seen pages from a series Byrne is shopping around U-GO GHOULS that looks like quite a bit of fun. I do hope to see that series at some point in the future. I really believe that Byrne is, um.... burnt out on super-heroes and should explore, as much as the market will allow, other genres.

I'd like to see Simone do a story arc. I haven't read much of her work, but I've come across he comments online from time to time and she seems to have a good handle on what comics need to appeal to the female fan base. That's something that could only help the Legion. Simone is also the creator of the Women in Refrigerators site. Hmm, maybe she wants to fix Zoe...

I wouldn't mind letting her have a crack too. Aside from fixing Zoe, maybe she can make Imra more likeable too.

I'll bet she would do a flat out hilarious Legion of Substitute Heros story given the chance. Maybe one that could rival the Giffen Subs Special form years back.

Gail Simone showed up at the DCMB and confirmed she WAS asked to write something after DnA were already "off the book". "I haven't confirmed anything yet, however", she says.
She didn't mention Byrne.

She didn't mention Byrne. Is it for the regular Lagion series, or a proposed LEGION BLACK & WHITE limited series?

I doubt she'll be specific about the project since she admitted nothing has been confirmed yet, but why don't you pop over to the DCMB and ask her yourself? She was there again earlier today.

Gail HAS confirmed on the DC Legion board that she'll be writing a 4 issue story arc on the Legion preceding the new regular team. She also confirmed (Thankyouthankyouthankyou) that Byrne will not be the artist for her run. Check it out.

And here is today's Lying in the Gutters : John Byrne can currently be seen here deleting any messages about his planned-Dreamwave comic "You Go Ghoul" that no longer seems to be being published, or his reported "Legion" series with Gail Simone (as seen in Wizard and mentioned by Dan Didio at WizardWorld Texas). The reason? It appears Byrne may no longer be attached to the project. Gail Simone, however, has verified to this column that she is.

And here's the quote: Originally posted by Gail Simone Okay, I just got word that I can confirm this, so I came here first. YES, I am doing a four issue arc of Legion. I love the book, love the characters, and am having a blast. The story WILL be a standalone, but we will touch on some of DnA's brilliant stuff. It should be a fairly smooth transition, AND we'll be setting up some hints for the permanent team to follow. I'm so jazzed about this. To those who are skeptical, I completely understand. All I can say is I love the Legion and will do my best to tell a ripping yarn. The story is already partially finished and so far, response has been excellent. Unfortunately, John Byrne is not doing the art. I'm disappointed because I think the guy is just a giant in this industry, and his recent pencils have been excellent. When you see his JLA you'll see what I mean. HOWEVER, the art team it looks like we'll be putting together should NOT disappoint. Another of my all-time favorites, someone I've wanted to work with for ages. More as that develops! Fun. Can't wait. Oh, by the way, I've seen several of the upcoming scripts for DnA's run and they KICK BOOTY. Seriously. You guys will love them, I think. I don't know - I like Gail's stuff, but I'm still at a complete loss as to why they didn't give DnA the three extra issues to tie up more plots they asked for - esp. the Cub thing - if there's going to be five fill-ins (inc. Steve L's issue) before the new regular team starts.

Quoting Gail from the DCMB on her all-time favorite artists: wish I could do a Legion book with Dave (Cockrum), or ANY book with Dave. Maybe someday. He's one of the greats. I've been very fortunate to work with some of my all-time favorites, like Michael Golden, Alex Toth, Jill Thompson, Kevin Maguire, Dan DeCarlo, Klaus Janson and Jose Luis Garcia Lopez. Dave would make that group even better! I wonder if she's already mentioned who she's working with?
