BUMP Because we got a really cool discussion going in another thread about the pros and cons of the X-Men's Outback era, but it's better we continue it in this thread. I feel too lazy to copy and paste, so I'll list the gist of the discussion: - Indian Lad is Pro-Outback. He likes Havok and thought Claremont was experimenting at the time. - I am Anti-Outback. I think Claremont should have stopped writing mutants after the Excalibur: The Sword Is Drawn special.

I do love the Weezie/Walt X-Factor issues that tied into Fall of the Mutants, with the origin of Apocalypse and Angel turning into one of Apocalypse's horsemen. Good stuff.

Layton and Simonson made me a huge fan of Angel. I personally think he's one of Marvel's most underrated characters and the way Simonson developed Warren by having him accept his curse from Apocalypse and still live life to the fullest was the best arc of the series. The crap Remender pulled with him in the Dark Angel Saga pisses me off to no end, because it completely revokes this development and turns Angel into a literal shell of his former self.

Hurrah! Remender's writing annoys the hell out of me, too!

Never read it. May have to see if I find an issue or two in the dollar bin.
Some of my favorite X-runs, in no particular order:
- Mike Carey on X-Men/X-Men Legacy.
- Peter David's brief but brilliant first run on X-Factor, and the first 24 issues of his second run on X-Factor.
- The X-Cutioner's Song. Best X-Event of all time, in my opinion. Fabian Nicieza at his best. Outside of that, Nicieza did some nice stuff with Rogue in X-Men, and his X-Force issues with Greg Capullo sizzled.
- 1975-1980 Claremont/Cockrum/Byrne, of course.
- Nicieza's Cable & Deadpool, Pre-Civil-War at the very least.

It's pretty Havok heavy since it spun out of the end of X-Factor v1. If you dig Alex Summers like I do, you'll probably enjoy it too. I liked X-Cutioner's song too. My favorite X-event, however, is X-Tinction Agenda. Claremont and Simonson are a team made in heaven!

Also, nearly the entire Pre-Liefeld run of New Mutants.

Unfortunately, the one downside of X-Tinction Agenda is the Liefeld art on New Mutants.

The reason I rate X-Cutioner's Song higher than X-Tinction Agenda is that Lee totally outshines the other two artists on XTA, whereas the art on XCS is much more consistent.

Ah, I see. John Bogdonave is pretty mediocre in my opinion and Liefeld is just plain bad. Jim Lee hit his peak during his time at Marvel. I haven't cared for his DC or Image work.

I agree about Lee. Back in the day, I thought he was overhyped, but his 1988-1991 Marvel work holds up well. Once he lost the hunger around the time he left Marvel, it showed in his work.

He was probably the last great X-Men artist too. Even though Alan Davis still worked with the X-franchise during the 90's, no new artist really made their stamp on the series like Cockrum, Byrne, Romita, Silvestri, Davis, and Lee did.

Davis' early 90s writer/artist run on Excalibur is another favorite of mine. I can't accept any other version of Excalibur.

I liked both the Claremont/Davis and solo Davis Excalibur runs. They really developed Nightcrawler as a great leader and character in his own right in that series.

I don't like the Claremont/Davis Excalibur, except for the aforementioned The Sword Is Drawn special. Too much forced humor, too many loose ends (which Davis, rather admirably, tied up in his writer/artist run.)

I really liked the humor. It made the series fun and not overly serious, contrasting with the other three X-series from the same time. The Cross Time Caper is one of the best X-stories out there.

We'll have to agree to disagree on the Cross-Time Caper.

I've been trying to think of other notable X-Men artists since 1991. I did mention Greg Capullo's year-long run on X-Force, before the Image brats poached him. Also Scot Eaton's work on X-Men Legacy -- I really wish he had drawn the entire Mike Carey run. And Pablo Raimondi on the Madrox mini-series and a handful of issues of PAD's X-Factor.
None of them were around for that long, but then Jim Lee only did a handful of X-Men issues scattered across three years.

I've been skimming through the older posts in this thread, and found a reminder that I actually once thought Remender was good! LOL I read the second Uncanny X-Force trade (the library has the first one, too, but the second one arrived first) and overall I liked it. The action was punchy, the dialogue snappy, and the plotting tight. Remender explores Fantomex's potential, he makes Logan and Warren tolerable to me, and he has a decent handle on Deadpool. The only thing he can't do for me is make me like Betsy. I think Betsy is the Tigra of the X-Men, just a hopeless character. Her "why do I feel this blood-lust?" schtick got old years ago. I do still stand by what I said about Psylocke, though. I dislike her even more now than I did three years ago.
