My guess is that since he's a decendant of both a hero and villain of the 'heroic age', the rule would be waived.

I thought I'd read that Brainy wouldn't be an actual member from the start since he refused to adopt the gender naming system.

He should join under the name "Twelth-level Intelligence and the Rest of you have the Cranial Capacity of an Insect When Compared to Me Lad"

I can understand that you didn't like reboot or SW6 Cos all that much, but I absolutely loved preboot Cos.

Good idea, Lame Lad! Maybe that's what will convince them to finally drop the gender naming requirement.

The root of the conflict isn't really a generational one - it may appear that way to many involved at the moment, but as more is revealed the issues are shown to run much deeper.

The logo headshots were changed when the decision to go from the square pictures on my initial cover were changed to circles and some of the headshots didn't quite work in the new frames. There will be new headshots each issue.

There is a VERY definite story behind how the Legion began and its followers came together; that will be revealed over the coming months.
Barry, I hope it's not a problem, but I reposted this on another site, because it was relevant to some of the discussion there. Let me know if you'd prefer I take it down.

I actually lke E-Lad's colors. They're muted enough to not be confused with Sun Boy's more bright red and yellow. Jan is someone I can see not having as flashy a costume (assuming he has roughly the same personality).

The Lallor scene, as well as what Barry's been saying here, made me realize Waid is definitely going for something much deeper. We can't really judge the Legion's reactions and attitudes at this point because we're not yet fully aware of its context.

Regarding the groupies. If I was a hot young powerful Legionnaire...well don't you think some of the members may not like the groupies. Maybe I need T-Wolf to show up and just think these groupies are dorks (much like us fans? smile )

Sun Boy usually is the fashion guy but I can totally see a Legionnaire say "hey stop with the L sign already the cameras are here...and get a new wardrobe...and maybe a better haircut. doh!"

Can't wait for the rebel within the rebel team. T-Wolf...or someone who doesn't buy the movement so much "get a life already kid". wink Some of the Legionnaires I would guess would be snotty (E-Lad and Princess P?) and may look down on their fans.

doh! Ofcourse I am sure a fan will prove themselves. "Poor Tenzil was such a good guy why did he have t die proving us his worth???" wink

Well, we do know that the Legion does not have a clue about what's really going on either, and yet they chose to act against the advise of the people we have to assume do know, the UP. That is in my opinion already enough to call their actions rash, maybe even irresponsible, unless they know something concrete about the UP that makes them distrust them to that degree (and that didn't seem to be the case, judging from Cos' attitude). Dislike for them because of rebelliousness (or because of different views on how to tackle the future) is not enough. In any case they are going to have to assume the responsibility for the consequences of what they did, and that will be fun to watch.

Again, this rashness is one of the less endearing aspects of being young, and I think Mr Waid did a good job in portraying it. This Legion has a lot of growing up to do, and I think that's good. But at some point we do need to start seeing some of the more likeable aspects of youth.

Simply 'cause the UP presumably knows whats going on doesn't make them trustworthy.

In all likelihood, they have an agenda as sinister as the SPs - or worse.

I dunno...given what we saw on Lallor, the situation is looking pretty sinister already.

the Lallor situation was SO Tienammen Square (sp.) and it bothered me when THAT happened that the UN response was so "we're gonna sanction you if it happens again" to the Chinese government

sometimes you need to do more than simply defend the helpless, sometimes you have to take a stand against the monsters -- there was something so painful about the question "How is this better" coming out of that broken, bleeding, burned child's mouth

(yes, i'm one of those who like to see the multi-faceted quandry of intervention explored in a super-hero book occassionally)

re: the opening sequence

all of the panels showed critical moments in world history, where quite literally, the world changed AND there were people who took an active part in that process (often credited with a singular achievement where many took part, of course)

what i liked about it: it solved the whole problem of legacy for me ... the Legion of Super-Heroes is not a part of Superman's legacy anymore... the Legion becomes part of a line of heroes that helped bring about necessary change ... the JLA becomes part of that tapestry

kinda cool way to jump into it ... and the letterer really helped nail the travelling through time feel of it

The panel of Jesse Owens winning the gold in Nazi Germany really struck me... the whole sequence had power.

Oh, here's something I was wondering that's spoiler free: who are the villains in that JLA panel? The Joker's the only obvious one. (and what's Green Lantern doing/creating? I can't tell what that thing with the turn key is...)

It wasn't the obvious choice, but the more I think on it, the more I appreciate it for its subtle influenses... it's subtle power!

There's a story of Owens returning home, and STILL refused service at a white diner, despite having won at Berlin. He chucked his medals into the river, according to the story.

The fact that the UP was standing by while thousands of kids were massacred--under the Legion flag--seems pretty concrete to me.

I think it's important to recall that this Legion is a huge popular movement, not a simple team of superheroes. The usual "we dare not interfere with the cultures/politics of the ordinary people" rationale doesn't really apply anymore. This Legion is ordinary people, and it's a lot of them. There are thousands of members on Lallor alone--can you really say that they "don't have a clue what's going on" when they're the ones being shot at?

Incidentally, while you and many others disapprove of the Legion's intervention on Lallor, several folks over at Comic Book Resources think the UP is being written as unrealistically evil because it didn't forcefully intervene. I think that's a sign that Waid did a good job setting up this conflict--any possible resolution would have been controversial, and that's as it should be.

FWIW I think the "best" resolution would probably have been to go along with the UP, mostly because I agree with Brainy's utilitarianism and think he should be obeyed without question as a Living God at all times. Brainiac5 But I find the Legion's choice much more appropriate for a bunch of teenage champions of social justice, and I don't dislike them for it at all.

Hmmm... I found it really hokey, which bums me out because I REALLy wanted to love this. And the transition from bubbly teens having a good time to kick ass supersleuths who weren't going to put up with what the 'adults' had in mind just seemed forced to me, just too quick.

like I said, just hokey, very archie legion-like without the archie legion looks. (Thankfully the artwork was friggin' INCREDIBLE!)

<shrug> disappointed.

Did you ever read 1984, Animal Farm, Anthem, or Farenheit 451, Bubble Wrap? I feel a similar theme with our new LSH and those books. Here's my take on the new series...

Think of a world where day-to-day life is rather dull and boring...where your lot in life is fairly pre-determined...where society pushes conformity and frowns upon individuality.

Aside from seeing Macrobots, flight rings and gene identity tags, the concept is actually not terribly far fetched from what most of us experience every day. When you see someone get hit by a car and that car speeds away, do you walk away and think to yourself, "Wow, glad that wasn't me." I guarantee that there are a lot of people in the world who would do just that and go about their own business, expecting the police to eventually find the person who did it and that an ambulance will come to take care of the person.

Maybe you're not like that at all. Maybe you are the type of person who immediately looks at the car's license plate, writes the number down and whips out his/her cell phone, calls 911, gives the car identification to the police, and attempts to calm the person down until an ambulance arrives. Maybe you are the type of person who is willing to make an impact in life and is willing to go out of his/her way to help others. Maybe you are the type of person who is willing to break up a fight at the bar, even if it means taking a punch in the process. Maybe...you ARE a hero, yourself.

While its still very early to judge, this is how I interpret the essense of the Legion movement. Young kids who are fed up with having their lives decided for them, who are sick of waiting for others to do the right thing, and who are willing to stand up and make a difference by helping others. In short, these teens are willing to be heroes, whether they possess super powers or not.

To you, it may seem hokey that they are rebelling against a utopian society where everything is perfect, but I think (and hope) we'll soon start to see another side to this so-called "wonderful life" in the 31st century.

Many of those books that I listed above dealt with future or make-believe utopian societies where everyone works for the common good, knowledge of the big picture is limited to all but a few, and individualism is suppressed. Some of these "wonderful" societies weren't quite so wonderful. In fact, they were quite sinister in nature. I'm betting that this is the case with our new 31st century as well and I think it's gonna be an interesting read as we progress, along with a couple of funny one-liners.

Oh, and CRIKEY but does Shady look good. I liked her costume from the first time I saw it, but it's my absolute favorite now. It's one of the few superperson outfits I could see looking good in a live-action movie. Very slick.

well i finally got my hands on issue #1 of the new "Legion Of Super Heroes" yesterday !!! and what a great final Christmas present it was laugh

and although, i felt like i'd seen half of it already, it was still amazing to read through and marvel at BARRY's stunning artwork !!!

Mark's set up for the new book was great, loved all the "new words" for future tech etc !!! i actually liked the "Eat it Granpa" line !!!

loved all the interaction between the team, and i like the fact that they all seem very different, and will enjoy seeing who likes who, and who doen't get on with each other !!!

i liked SUNBOY's response to calling BRAINY a "geek" !!! and SB and COSMIC BOY's conflic was great, ending with CB ignoring the adults advice !!!

also the scene with STARBOY running off to BRAINY was cool !!!

the artwork was amazing, loved all the costumes, different hairstyles, the cityscapes, the tech and special effects when the LEGIONNAIRES use their powers !!!

i'll echo everyone when they say they'd like a bolder ULTRABOY logo !!!

but apart from that i have no concerns about this first issue !!!

i know they're gonna rock ......

Matthew.

I feel similar to you in a lot of ways, Matthew. It's true that everything isn't "there" in this issue. Instead, we're being given bits and pieces. There's a full story here (unlike a lot of books out there where the story drags on and on) but we're also left with the sense of intentionally not being told all the details. IOW, there's more for us to learn about the situation. I look forward to figuring it all out.

I think "hyperpath" is just a 31st means of interstellar communication that travels faster-than-light somehow.

The funny thing here is that I never went through this. I jumped into the Legion feet first - with the Great Darkness Saga, no less.
I'm with you, actually. I got into Legion during Terra Mosiac (talk about a lot of characters to follow, many of whom had the same names and powers)! However, I've heard that complaint too often to discount it.

Hi Guys
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I think it's brilliant that you're already debating the various layers to what's happening - especially as we've only given such small glimpses of the big picture so far! smile

Hi Awkward Pause Boy - It's fine by me to quote what I say here elsewhere - as long as it's not edited in any way and that it's okay with the Legion World administrators (It's their site content after all). I won't say anything here that I wouldn't say elsewhere - unless I state it's a Legion World 'exclusive' there may be one or two of those along the way! laugh

Hi DrakeB3004 - That JLA adventure hasn't been published yet, so unfortunately I can't reveal any details at this stage! wink

Thanks again for all the kind words about the artwork! smile

Cheers
Barry
