I do like moon cakes with red bean paste. The ones filled with yellow stuff are not so good.

I think the yellow stuff might be salted eggs.

I love the red paste! They're some kinda beans, I think? I dunno, they're delicious and that's all I care about. wink

Side note: I totally didn't realize autumn was coming until I saw this thread! Sometimes I think I may be slightly asleep at the wheel of life....

Salted duck egg yolks, representing the moon.

There are several traditional fillings, Red bean paste, Lotus nut paste, and chopped nuts candied into a gel.

I'm not a fan of any of them. They are loaded with fat. The traditional recipe for red bean paste, is beans, brown sugar, and schmaltz.

My great grandfather used to render his own schmaltz. If only he knew he could buy it at Jewish butchers.

Thanks for the info, TL.

An old story goes that these moon cakes were used to plan a successful rebellion. Messages were baked into the cakes with the time and place for an uprising against the... I think it was the Mongols who ruled China then. Too sleepy to check right now.

Here in South USA we like Moon Pies and RC Colas.

But that ain't got nothin' to do with Autumn.

Autumn goes well with pumpkin pie. But we don't have that here. Only Cream of Squash. Grandma's recipe!

Once, I was a boy of summer. Now, I'm a man of fall. Eventually I will be an old man, wondering what the fuck happened to springtime.

Autumn is my favorite season of the year. It's cold enough that I can justify wearing jackets, pants, and hats, but not so cold that I'm miserable. laugh

Plus, Halloween is during this season!

We know autumn has arrived in Houston when the ten-day forecast has no days above 90F. grin

When I was in Cebu, Halloween celebrations included a picnic in the cemetery & kids playing tag between the graves. I thought it was pretty cool.

Also the more serious cleaning up, memorializing the dead, etc. etc.

Next time we have a DC/Marvel crossover, I want it to take place in the Hostessverse

Oh please Rocky, you and I both know Houston will still probably get to 90F at least once during the "fall" there. tongue

Oh dear, I missed this reply. Yeah, in the Philippines, we celebrate All Saints' Day on November 1 and All Souls' Day on November 2. It's more about remembering the departed, rather than the costumes and fun of Halloween itself.

I like both dimensions of the season, though.
