Anyone read the Xanth books? The metal-eating flying worm swarm thingies made me think of the squiggles (or whatever they were called) from the earlier books -- the ones that floated around and could drill right through anything.

In addition to Metal eating worm swarm thingies and Dxaundii, there's also "lunar leeches" from the LSHit21C #2. Strangely, however, lunar leeches seem to be made of metal themselves, so it seems like they would be vulnerable to attack by other metal eating space thingies.
