At least I won't be going to the comic shop in September to have to endure this mess. Once Legion #23 comes out I get to walk away quietly and leave DC Comics to self destruct on it's own. They won't be able to damage the Legion anymore once it's gone...I hope!

so ... "JUSTICE LEAGUE #23.3: DIAL E" ... is the real name of a comic book? a long slow tour through crazy town. Well, in actuality it's some kind of tie-in/coda to the just-cancelled excellent Dial H book by series writer China Miéville, so it's actually the only "Villains Month" book that I'm likely to buy. Terrible title, granted, but maybe some readers will pick it up and see what they missed.

On Wednesday, my CBS gave us opt-in sheets to make sure we got the books we wanted and that we didn't have to get books we didn't want even if it's a title we normally get. I didn't know before then that there were going to be multiple villain books for everyone (or almost everyone -- I didn't see "Vibe" on the list), so not only were they foisting a more expensive 3D cover I didn't even want on me, but I now have two of everything I get from DC for that month. (At least I'm not a Batman reader with four instead of one.)
Of course, filling out the sheet showed just how little I'm buying from DC these days, so with cancellations and titles I've dropped, I think I'm only netting one extra DC book in September even though I opted in for all the multiples of the books I buy. And now I wonder if I can just till my CBS to give me the 2D.
I told the owner I'd been dreading this month since it was announced. She said they had been, too, and that it was a big headache -- and that was before this announcement. Poor Dan and Katy.

Some, like the Dial E "Justice League" (actually Dial H) issue mentioned above, or the Ventriloquist "Dark Knight" (actually Batgirl) issue map to different series entirely. And some are just plain random one-shots, like the Joker issue of "Batman", which is written by Andy Kubert, art by TBD (probably been announced by now, I suppose), and has no apparent tie to anything - it's just a Joker story set "some time ago" before he cut his face off. Only a few actually have anything by the actual creative team and so "count", like Wonder Woman #23.2: First Born (but not #23.1: Cheetah!)

Yeah, I kind of assumed as much, but the completist in me doesn't want to miss anything in "my" books, and I'm too lazy to dig up the solicits and try to figure out which might actually be "relevant."

Okay. But that does rather reward DC's incompetent malfeasance. I might not buy a product if I have a moral disagreement with a company but why would their efficiencies matter to me? Is there reason to believe that they made this mistake maliciously? If they have a product I want at a price I wish to pay, isn't that pretty much the end all? Most of us have worked for companies or organizations at one time or another. Some really poorly run companies succeed because well, someone has to. I imagine DC is running mostly off momentum anymore but if they have something I want to buy, I'll buy it without guilt I think. Can't really think of any reason not to, based upon this fiasco anyhow.

I decided I was pretty much done with DC's New 52 when this "Villains Month" was announced, well before this allocation fiasco came to light... Everything I'm reading reinforces that decision. I'm down to LI'L GOTHAM and 3 or 4 Vertigo books. Dark Horse and Image thank you, Didiot & Co.

Reboot refers to motivations when buying. I cannot really say I have ANY loyalty to DC but I do give pause about dropping titles when thinking about my CBS. Like most shops, they're a small and independent business. I've known them for decades. In some respects, any difficulty they might have over this is their own doing. I LOVE my comics guys but they do little to try and interest customers in other titles, even when I ask. They have comparatively little shelving dedicated to off DC/Marvel for browsing. Compare to the shop stopped at in De'troit, while visiting Seymour and Dev. They had a huge non-DC/Marvel selection and that guy couldn't have been more helpful. All I had to say was, I was from Toledo (i.e., he'll never see me again), I wanted to try some news things and I only start at #1. He told me, which new books were getting buzz in his shop and he looked mightily for #1's that weren't still on the shelf... One of the #1's he pulled from under his check-out, which I'll presume was meant for keeping. I bought 3 titles; 5 books bagged and boarded that I'd never read before. If I like them, I like them. If I don't, I don't. I like the medium so I'm open to non-DC/Marvel. I guess I'm independent curious  I wish more people were so these other titles had better chances at surviving. Heck, I think I'll go soak and read one of those titles right now.

Can't really think of any reason not to, based upon this fiasco anyhow. The incompetence is the basic subject of the thread - not being able to judge demand properly. The malfeasance is in the design of the thing - mapping many of these one-shots onto essentially random titles, which creates problems for retailers and confusion for customers. Really, it causes incredible problems for one or the other - a conscientious retailer has to spend hours setting up new one-month pull lists and ensuring customers know what's going on (which, in part, gets thrown out the window by a last-minute $3 version), and then the customer still has to either research or accept that they're getting up to 4x their normal pull list while possibly missing important stories to series they ARE getting (like the Batgirl VM issue "counting" as a Dark Knight issue). A more unscrupulous one can just dump the whole thing on customers and essentially gouge pull list customers for $16 for a $3 book, since the ISSN codes are the same, if they're subscribed to (e.g.) Batman. And teaching them they can get away with this sort of thing means they'll do it again.

All of this buzz that's really a negative for honest retailers and loyal readers is going to create a frenzy for the collector vultures who will perceive extra "value" to the comparative rarity of these special covers. Back issue prices will be revved up, and they will be considered "hot" and "collectible" at least for the short term. Less scrupulous retailers will hold some their stock back for gouging purposes, and the speculators will clean out the shelf of any stock on display.
DC will take any buzz they can get and will secretly spin the perceived collectability of this stunt ultimately as a "win". I don't believe the limited quantities were entirely unplanned. Wouldn't be surprised at all if there's a back-door deal with some of the larger retailers for a more-than-fair share of the supposed "allocation", either.
I'm personally glad I've dumped the "New 52" wholesale, as Pov has, so this has little or no effect on me. If I can eventually get a no-frills cheaper $3 version of the coda to "Dial H", I'll be satisfied. If not, I'll be alright.

After reboot's post, figured I'd call my comic shop guy and get the gist. Fortunately, they were not hit hard by this. They never as long as I've known them have "held back" issues and most of the specialty issues like this go right into someone's bins. You get one. If there's not enough and you get left out they try and catch you with the next thing. When it comes to Legion, I'm never left out so....

Details: You are receiving this e-mail if you ordered one or more of the books listed below that are releasing September 4th. DC recently announced to all retailers that they would not be able to completely fill orders for many of the DC Villains Month 3D Motion Covers. After analyzing the information provided by DC on Friday evening, August 9th, we believe that for the week of September 4th, DCBS will not be able to fill all orders for the books listed below. DCBS made this determination by comparing existing orders with information provided by DC. This analysis does not take into consideration any possible damages, shortages or other shipping problems from the distributor which could affect any Villains books scheduled for September 4th release and not just the books below.

The pricing above only applies for customers wishing to substitute. If you wish to add a 2D book to your order, pricing will be 40% off ($1.79).

Most frickin months are villains months at DC AND Marvel now ... with these blood thirsty "heroes". ... also don't care about no 3D covers ... I don't need to holograms ... no base ball cards ... just my 2d covers.

I bought the 2D version of "Dial E", the only one I intend to buy. It's by the same writer as Dial H and is said to act as a coda to that series (which I loved), so it was a no-brainer. If there were no such thing as a 2D version, though, I might not have picked it up.

I really thought, as a huge fan of Secret Society of Super-Villains and Thunderbolts and other books that have focused on villains, that this 'Villains month' would be just my cup of tea.
But, since the reboot, I've realized that none of these characters are actually the villains I want to read about, and that, much like with my taste in heroes, the villains they've chosen are the one's I'm least interested in, for the most part.
