I suppose it would depend on the company, yeah. I don't think JK Rolwing, for example, would stand for this level of interference.

As for Marvel, I really can't tell since I don't follow Marvel all that much.

JK Rowling is writing her own creations. She IS the company,. She's so rich, she may even have rights to what we are writing on this thread. lol.

I sort of disagree with this point. Comics have been around for more than seven decades and it's only now, when sales are at their almost lowest of all time, that we start to see all this heavy-handed editorial interference? And it's because the projects are bigger? There's no doubt that comics are a profitable source of ideas for Hollywood right now but not even that point's new. Superman and Batman have been extremely profitable and culturally important properties across all mediums since the moment they were created.

IMO there is a cultural management problem at DC right now that is specific to that company because of the people in place there and that can't be blamed on just being a sign of the times or whatever.

The problem could very well be the capabilities of the people in place. It's a tough job though, coordinating creative talent. By definition, creative people do not like being boxed but I've always told my Math students, the job is to be creative within the confines of what is logically TRUE. Dadaists might disagree, but IMO, without confines, creativity is no challenge.

By "bigger projects" I'm referring to seemingly anal need for consistency across ALL books. I think of Levitz writing Universo Project. All the sub-plots and threads that wove together and around each other but didn't clash. One man, with help from friends, was able to coordinate that. But now, with the movies and cross-overs driving the business, the projects, the stories are spread over MANY books and MANY artists.

I don't particularly care for the direction but given that is how they decided to run their business, I don't see that they have any choice as to be anal and rewrite the artists when their work conflicts.

My concern is for titles like Fables. Willingham was able to weave those story threads but you think as he expands that "universe" across several books and artists, Fables isn't headed the same direction as mainstream DC? It is. It has to be particularly as movies become part of his profit line. Hopefully he will be more successful in his communications with and coordination of the artists than has been the leadership at DC.

And therein lies the damnation. Corporate and movies are leeching the uniqueness out of comics and turning them into the same bland melting pot. Characters are all starting to sound the same. Corporate and the movies don't want unique, individual stories, they want repeats with spectacular fx's because the general public enjoys its pablum. Comics readers are more discerning and want characters and stories to move forward.

Damn you, you kids! Get off my lawn or I'm callin' tha cops!

It's a profit-oriented business. Sad, but true frown

Maybe that's another reason for the frequent reboots. They want to keep the stories "fresh" so the general public will find it easier to follow the comics. They're hoping that people who watch the movies will want to also buy the comics.

When I see this thread name ... I picture crazed DC folk chasing George Perez out of its yard with garden tools.

Poor George.

Thank you Blacula for your Perez Report smile Actually met him once in 1999, also thought he was a gread fella and am collecting his work for for over two decades now...

Guess what he says is exactly why so many stories just don't work, and DC doesn't seem to notice that on the long run, they are ruining their DC universe. We have seen what can happen if creaive interference is becoming a standard procedure (Threeboot #50 anyone?), and many of us are feeling that the stories are just not good any longer. I did try out for a few of the new DCU titles, but canceled most of them quickly... Resurrection Man, Red Hood and the Outlaws, Stormwatch, Huntress & Power Girl, Justice League International, you name em, even the inredibly slow Jim Lee Justice League and now Green Lantern with Goeff Johns off the title. With the Legion books canceled, I'm down to Earth 2 and I'm not too happy with that book either!

Sad to say but I guess my time in the DCU is up. Seems like I'll have some money to spend elsewhere now...
