In case you missed the buzz, or in case you missed or discussions elsewhere on this forum, Hawkeye is the single best comic book being made by either Marvel or DC.
Prepare for pages of praise to follow hitting on every facet of enjoying a comic book. Just know now that it is highly recommended and if you aren't buying you are missing out.
PS - the recent two parter in #4 & 5, with my boy Javier Pulido, were BRILLIANT.

I tried. I really did. But the art was just so horrible I couldn't bring myself to buy it, and whatever issue I read on the shelves didn't seem to have anything going on but people talking. So, yeah, ugly and boring.
Tell me what's awesome about it, maybe you'll make a sale!

He saved the dog. That was awesome. (I've just read #1 so far, waiting for the TPB.)
And I like lots of talking in comics, battle scenes bore me. So it all comes down to personal preference, I guess.
Art is such a personal thing, too. I just liked the Hawkeye artwork. It reminded me of Jason Pearson's work on the Legion during 5YL, which I absolutely hated at the time but now, for some reason, I love.

And I like lots of talking in comics, battle scenes bore me. So it all comes down to personal preference, I guess. Depends on the talking. I love clever, funny or quippy dialogue, which was common in PAD's run on Young Justice, or the early Young Avengers run (or early seasons of Buffy, on TV). Pages of posturing and bickering and exposition, more commonly seen in the Bendis Avengers or pre-DCnU Johns Justice League, on the other hand, have left me bored to tears. What little I read of the Hawkeye issue I picked up seemed less witty and more monology. Art is such a personal thing, too. That's true. I'm a terrible art snob. I like sleek 'pretty' pictures, Byrne and Kesel and Lee and Turner and Lightle and LaRocque. Stylized stuff, like Frank Miller or Jae Lee or Mignola, rarely works for me, even when it's limited to their own very specific areas. Every now and then, I make exceptions, 'cause I'm all inconsistent like that. Walt Simonson's run on Thor was well served by his style, even if I wouldn't want to see it on, say, Iron Man.

I actually LOVE the artwork by David Aja, and then especially the second art by Javier Pulido. So if you're not a fan of the artists, I'm not sure the series actually is for you.
Art is subjective and all that jazz, so I won't fault you for feeling that way...(he said, preparing to diplomatically do the opposite :D). But the artwork, IMO, has been nothing short of phenominal so far! In fact, that is one of the biggest draws of the series. It is certainly not pretty or sleek, but instead there is an unusual grittiness + classic combination that I find very appealing in Aja's work.
Pulido, meanwhile, is very experimental, and spends a great deal of time making each page stand out in its own artistic way using color, shadows and backgrounds to his advantage.
As I said, certainly not anything like the guys you mention, but in many instances, I think its better. Of course, subjective and all that jazz...:D

The artwork on Hawkeye has been nothing short of magnificent. Aja and Pulido say more with a wink or a nod than most artists can say with an army of colorists and 20 pages.
There has been action, yes there has, the kind that ends up with people having arrows in the eyes as Clint tackles Kate into a pool across the page. And a lot of talking, usually a major requirement of character development.
But mostly the writing and art are for tension.
The type of tension and suspense a can't live without comic book relies on.
Hawkeye is all charm. Sexy rather than sexual.

She just drug a shot in the chest Clint into the elevator. That was gripping! You know Kate was gonna come back and cut Madame Masque up into small pieces!

Kate's face when she looks up to see Maria Hill and Clint arriving to save her, complete with panel full of enemies in the background. Also incredible!

Man, if you would have told me a year or two ago that not only would I be reading Hawkeye, it would be my favorite book going in Marvel right now, I'd thought you were crazy. But, here we are.

GREAT comic--and in no small part due to the OUTSTANDING artwork! My CBS guy says most of his other constituents are turned off by the art like Set is. Well, not to poo-poo the tastes of others, but I, too, used to be turned off by any art that wasn't either a 'classical' style or a 'hot' style. But my tastes have broadened considerably over the last decade or so. While I still love artists like Byrne, Adams and Perez, I also now count among my faves such stylistic storytellers as R.M. Guera (of 'Scalped'), Rob Guillory (of 'Chew') and, yes, David Aja among many others. There are just so many valid ways to tell a story visually, I've learned not too dismiss any artist out of hand. It disturbs me that anyone would dismiss Hawkeye because of the art, but I guess that a couple of decades ago, I would have been right with them. Anyway, I LOVE that panel where a naked Hawkeye is leaping across the room, and they put a classic Hawkeye-in-mask head shot over where his privates should be!
Still "Lardy" to my friends!

You know, in reading #6 it occurs to me that posters who like humor in their comics would really like this series too. It's funny! Clever, witty and often outright hilarious--especially the aforementioned #6.

Well, I was waiting for the TPB, but broke down and got #2-6 at comixology. Wonderful, charming comic! I love the story, Clint is so human, dealing with everyday people and S.H.I.E.L.D. bigshots, street punks and global crime syndicates.
The page layouts are great, just visually interesting. I like the little insets with the special arrows; they're not just named but illustrated - then used in the action. And I love the covers.
It is funny without being slapstick. Even the title page has a little joke that changes with every issue.
I had never read a Hawkeye comic, don't know any of his history or who Katie is - but the story's written in such a way that you don't need the whole history, just a familiarity with comic book themes.

Kate Bishop is one of my favorites already. She's from the cast of Young Avengers. Her dad is super rich, her mom is dead. (I think) She is known as Hawkeye #3. but she has no real codename.
She uses a bow from Hawkeye, the Swordsman's old swords and some of Mockingbird's staffs.
I love how she is portrayed as a young woman, not just a generic kid, she's got a sense of humor and a sex drive.

I kind of liked her before but, this portrayal in Hawkeye is making her one of my favorites!
She's my comic book girlfriend.
She's just written as a normal person.

#7 - another great story, with the focus on Hurricane Sandy and a few digs at New Joisey. There's a scene where people are holding some looters at bay with garden tools - delightful. Loss and triumph with lots of water, and not an arrow shot.

It's only January, but #7 will almost certainly be a contender for best single issue of the year.

ditto! It's only January, but #7 will almost certainly be a contender for best single issue of the year. ditto! ... and it was genuine and dignified (not some sort of pandering to a tragedy for sales). I'm not sure which Hawkeye I love more.

I don't trust marvel with Hawkeye. I have bought the last four or five mini series... that were supposed to be ongoings... only to have them shut down despite good sales just because they wanted to do something else with the character....IN ANOTHER EFIN' BOOK!
That ticks me off something fierce. So, when this one came down the pike, I did'nt pick it up. Now I would be months behind.
Plus... I don't really buy marvel at all any more.
Damn you, you kids! Get off my lawn or I'm callin' tha cops!
Something pithy!

They just released the trade paperback volume 1.
This Hawkeye book is one of the best out there. I only get a few Marvel and one DC now but this Hawkeye series is GREAT! I don't think you really need to be following it every month anyway, half the time (if not more) the stories are self contained within a wider ongoing plot. You can try the latest one and see if you like it.
This might be the Hawkeye book you've been waiting for!
If I go to the CBS and get ONE book, and it is that month's Hawkeye, I am excited.

How good were the Valentine's Day issues? The costume design alone is worth the price of admission, and that's just a fraction of how good the art is, which is just a Fraction of how good the series is (see what I did there? ;)).
Kate Bishop, you Madame, are reaching heights on my 'favorite comic book character list' that haven't been reached in a long, long time.
Also love Natasha being called "the work wife". It fits really well. And ending the Spider-Woman / Hawkeye relationship was a welcome change. Not every superhero needs to date another superhero. Jeez.

I loved Kate Bishop here. What a great friend. Her "yeah, you were an ass, and messed that one up royally, but you are still a good person." What a pal. And it's such a real/human moment ... that is often missed in the metaphorical good versus evil realm of comics. and stuck between the Avengers and her best friend if not role model. in fact I like how sticky the friendship between Kate and Clint is, is he her role model, or does it work because he is really not role model material? both. Are they attracted to each other or does it work because they are really not attracted to each other? both. ... the other ladies and Clint come off very realistic as well, the sadness of the Bobbi and Clint divorce came through ... and it didn't involve them throwing couches at each like ninjas while shouting at the top of their lungs. That van of thugs was hysterical. and the ending ... didn't see that coming. can't wait until the next issue.

Oh, Pizza Dog! Life through canine eyes and ears. A visually unusual issue and the dog looks so doggedly charming. Really great expressions on his face. I'll have to reread it to pay more attention to all the symbols or icons, whatever they're called. But Kate has gone to California with the dog! Hawkeye continues to be an original, captivating book each month. It probably has my consistently favourite covers of all the monthly comics. Outstanding!
