That was my initial reaction, that he must have meant inveterate. But I looked up venerate and it could be right. Venerate = to regard with reverential respect. That's a verb, of course, but it could be used as an adjective as well. But does he venerate lying and liars, like a rascally rogue, or does he venerate the characters and comics medium?

Of course, it could just be an error.

Yes there is a word venerate which is why I figured his spellchecker didn't catch it. As he is a professional writer I though he might be making a pun with a similar sounding word to the usual inveterate so I looked it up, and venerate is not listed as ever being an adjective, only a verb.

Having ruled that out, it bugged me. Can't say I didn't give him a chance. smile

Though the person quoting him could be at fault.

Inveterate is also fun because it's so close to invertebrate, and makes me think the writer is sneaking in a two-fer and insinuating that the 'inveterate' person is also spineless.

Since he's including himself in the group, that's unlikely. Men might happily call themselves liars, but seldom spineless. smile

Could also be "veteran" liars which is almost an anagram and the sort of thing spell check might have close to "venerate".
"Inveterate" is the word I would expect but is less likely to be changed to "venerate" via sloppy clicking in the spell box

Whaddya mean I'm out of continuity?
