I think Ayla is a good bet to be the next victim, or Element Lad.
You think so? I mean, isn't she still shown alive on the preview cover of issue #21? Granted, I wouldn't put it above editorial to forget to mention to Portela that she's dead by issue #21, but you never know. I'm going with Element Lad or one of the rookies.

Just a thought, but Sun Boy has died quite a few times in various 'Boots (3Boot Dirk in Lo3W, adult Dirk in TMK...)
I hope it's not Element Lad, simply because he's already died both Postboot and Threeboot. Let it be someone who hasnt died before, like say Ultra Boy or Shadow Lass. And this is only IF someone really has to die - I'd prefer no more deaths myself!
Have to agree with the poor portrayal of many longtime Legionnaires. Leaving Thom behind? Violet protesting for something that doesn't even seem mildly insulting? Shady being all diva-emotional? Am OK with Tinya so far but do hope she gets her act together next issue. And I don't see why Jan couldn't spare a few more seconds to transmute all the debris that fell on Thom! What the!

I forgot about Ayla being on that cover with Brainy and Jo...I retract my earlier comment.
Does anyone else think maybe this is the story Levitz wanted to go with when Mon-El won the last leadership election? I remember reading that the leader was gonna be put through the wringer, but that never really seemed to eventuate at the time.
Re: what happened to Star Boy...I don't find it as much poor characterization as a lot of others do. I do think the art could have carried that scene a lot better though. With no flight rings, the only person present who could have done anything was Jan, and I got the impression that it was all happening so quickly there was no time to react....ie: Jan could have turned the debris into air, but could he have done it without causing further structural collapse and potentially putting Thom in more danger? And then the ship was gone, with the inference that they kind of had to take this chance or they might not get it again. That was my take on it anyway...am I alone in the wilderness with this one?

That was pretty much how I read the scene as well (admittedly I also think Thom isn't dead). The art really did not help this issue at all and Portela cannot come back too soon for me.
My money is on Rokk though for next dead.

My money is on Rokk though for next dead. It does kind of seem like writers haven't known what to do with Cos (or Garth, for that matter) for quite some time. I wouldn't be surprised if either of the male founders bought it. The death of a founder might be felt to have more gravitas to it than the death of rank and file members like Sun Boy and Star Boy, and since they've decided to ride the 'kill off team-members to try and fluff up sales' train, killing off a founder would be a logical next step. And gosh, it's such a bold creative move, too! Remember when they killed off all those New X-Men and their book got cancelled? I'm sure it will work *this time...* Keep killing those golden geese. One of them is sure to have a magical gold-creating-thingie inside it!

Summarized from Bloomberg Businessweek, March 11, 2012:
(L)ast October, Robert Iger, chief executive officer of Walt Disney… was in secret negotiations to acquire Lucasfilm…
Iger needed to do some due diligence… how would Disney assess the value of an imaginary galaxy?
…Lucas had already done the cataloging. His company maintained a database called the Holocron (which) lists 17,000 characters in the Star Wars universe inhabiting several thousand planets over 20,000 years…
Disney would pay $4 billion for Lusasfilm…”
Apparently Disney / Pixar / Marvel / Lucasfilm considers a vast array of characters with a complex history valuable intellectual property.
Next time we have a DC/Marvel crossover, I want it to take place in the Hostessverse

If there are more Legionnaire deaths to come, I'd bet on one or more of the rookies. There'd be a lot of emotional power in the death of a youngster who's had more storyline and character development over the past few years than most of the veteran members have had. It doesn't matter whether they go down a tragic victim or a hero.

If all the characters (sentients and assorted beasties) who ever appeared in 50 years of Legion were named, as if given parts in a movie, I wonder if they would total 17,000. The Legion doesn't have quite the drawing power of the Star Wars franchise. Regardless, it illustrates why these companies guard their trademarked characters. And keep bringing back the ones they killed off.

Star Boy had Gravity Kid waiting in the wings, and there have been numerous "fire powered" characters in the DCU that may replace Sun Boy. Who's to say Ayla's powers aren't now redundant with Harmonia as a waiting replacement. Element Lad seems too convenient at times and may give way to more panel time for Chemical Kid. Oh, and Chemical King was on the cover all those years ago when he bought the farm ...

Well, killing Ayla would give Violet some heartbreak... Violet and Nura can comfort each other, and they can always bring Garth back if they need another lightning-wielder.
Or they could kill Jo to REALLY mess with Tinya's head. Anyway, Mon is more powerful.
Wow. Can't believe how unemotional I am now getting about the possibility of all these Legionnaires biting it.

I finally found out a bit of what's to come. I think I'm finished with the Legion.
I have the Archives and the old issues. My own selfish wish now is the series be canceled and all those in power at DC get fired (I'm holding my tongue on what I really wish on some of those assholes). And one day the Legion will thrive again.
The Legion has now hit what I would say is the single lowest point in its history. Worst than the Conway 70's, the threeboot, Legion on the Run, etc. I will not willingly accept such abuse.

I was disappointed that Validus wasn't in this issue as 17 ended with him landing on a planet and Tharock saying how he would destroy the Legionnaires home world. I expected to see him on Earth causing mayhem.

So far I'm not liking this storyline. I personally don't need to have a character eaten in order for the story to impact me. It comes across as lazy storytelling to me. Wasn't that what Giffen did at the start of 5YG with Blok?
Levitz used to be a much better writer than he has been with this re-start. It's sad to say but I would almost rather he had not come back than to have him tell sub-par stories.

I think Mr. Levitz still has it - the latest Adventure Comics run had great stories and the Academy stories were very entertaining to me. The LSH title proper has grabbed me not so much. Maybe the Legion characters are just too rebooted and tired-out at this point. The interest and dynamics seem to be generally contained to the five newest members for me; the ones who have little background (Glorith, Chem Kid, Dragonwing, Comet Queen and Harmonia). While i'm not a big fan of Dragonwing or Harmonia at this point, the older characters seem out of character a lot or just blah. I guess I'm simply a continuity freak in a non-continuity New DCU universe.
