He's sort of a "this is your toddler on drugs". Maybe Darkseid read Imra's fears about her children and used them to create her worst nightmare.
The worst Validus was the one who talked; I think there were two stories with him speaking. The raging, mute and seemingly mindless giant was a lot more scary.
Vril Dox in R.E.B.E.L.S. (the second series) had Tribulus, a look-alike version of Validus, origin unexplained. It will be interesting to see if there's any connection between the two in the upcoming story.

Except Tribulus was far weaker right?
It would also be interesting (to me) if Validus was Darkseid's child! And when Validus grew up he would have near omnipotent powers! (but he never would ... )

It's also interesting to note that until Tharok's tech wipe killed Dirk, Validus was the only member of the Five to live up to the "Fatal" part when dealing with Legionnaires.

(but he never would ... ) The 'terrible twos' last longer when your parents are gods... I picture a sort of Squire of Gothos / Trelane thing with the 'Validus's real parents return,' where they are sixty foot tall semi-incorporeal super-evolved beings of pure psychic force, and are terribly apologetic that little Validus got out of his playpen and ran riot for a few decades (which is just a blink of an eye to them, Mommydus just literally turned around for a second and bam, he was gone!). They give him his binky and he settles right down and toddles through the portal back to wherever they transcended to when they evolved beyond mortal existence.

Set's suggestions got me to thinking. What does Validus need to consume to live? If he were imprisoned in the Sun or in a tesseract, how would we ensure he lives out his natural life span?

Validus: last son of Echidna.
Next time we have a DC/Marvel crossover, I want it to take place in the Hostessverse

Anyone have a reasonable guess as to how tall Validus is?
I have lived for the Legion and one day I shall die for the Legion.

I'd go with the default 25 ft. although he has been only a bit taller than his teammates (perhaps 9 ft.) in some pictures, and wrassled face to face with a sixty foot tall Colossal Boy in others, so it does vary with the artist / situation.
While it's never been stated as such, and generally dismissed as artistic inconsistency or 'perspective' or whatever, I'd be fine with Validus having a little-talked-about power to alter his size when he's angry, getting bigger as he goes on a rampage.
The write-up leaves room for him to have other little-talked-about powers as well, such as the ability to transport himself from world to world (perhaps his psychic energies build up over months and randomly shunt him to another populated world, drawn to the psychic energies of its inhabitants, explaining why he never seems to randomly appear in interstellar space or the heart of a star or inside a black hole or something, but always on a populated world).
On the other hand, he might get transported from world to world by some unknown third party, who gets its jollies out of snatching him up after a rampage when he's all tuckered out, and air-dropping him on some other unsuspecting world, perhaps as part of a long-term and whacky science experiment, or an alien reality TV show (let's see how Planet X deals with 'Survivor: Validus!'), or even part of some sort of extortion racket (pay up, or we drop Validus on your planet!) or distraction (while they are dealing with Valzilla stomping through Tokyopolis, we can steal the Fractal Diamonds of Scintarr from their museum!).

One thing's for sure though - no matter how small or big he gets, Validus is still one scary !*&!%!
