Guys... I managed to buy my issue today. I'm not going to spoil anything you guys didn't already know, but I can say that Dirk is dead. And, well, believe me, it gets confirmed. Rather gruesomely.

I was spoiled-- quite against my desire-- to the event in question on Facebook (said spoiler revealer was tongue-lashed by many fans so I hope it does not happen again). I do love the Giff, but I certainly do not care for this development. Reuniting the Levitz/Giffen team was obviously a fiasco.
I guess all I can say at this point is, it will be undone anyway upon the next reboot.

Interesting that in Greek mythology, Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to man. So Promethean giants steal fire from man and give it to whom? I hope there is more going on here than an off panel gratuitous death.
Whaddya mean I'm out of continuity?

I read the issue this morning... Apart from what's been spoiled, which I'm not happy with (to the point that I hope there's some reveal later), I must say that this is the most beautiful Giffen art we've seen in a very long time... And the story is actually very good, probably the best issue of the new 52 LSH. Makes Giffen's sudden departure even more regrettable

From the preview it seems very much like the beginning of the Baxter LSV saga and/or the Omen saga in terms of tension and pacing .... good old Levitz ... except now Jacques is not the one frazzled, since he's a mature Legionnaire now.

Whoa! It got worse! But I agree with Pariscub, it's a very interesting issue, feels quite frantic (as is the situation the Legionnaires are in) and I think the new Tharok is fascinating.
Now to go back and read it more slowly, with my eyes less wide.

Okay, mixed feeling here.
On the one hand, definitely not a fan of the off-panel death, though I might have bought it if we'd seen the ship coming down, and Dirk struggling heroically to keep it intact.
On the other hand, there's definitely the much needed change in feel to the book with this issue, and this seems like it could be a major Legion story, instead of the fairly inconsequential stuff we've been getting, like, forever.
On the third hand (getting all Jaquaan on you), it still kind of feels like a story we've seen before. If the Promethean Giants are from New Gods mythology, it seems like they are basically blending "The Magic Wars" with "The Great Darkness Saga", with added Fatal Five for good measure.

Incidentally, if I had to guess, I'm betting Giffen quit over wanting to use Kirby stuff that they wouldn't let him use.

I like that it is getting back to what the Legion does ... big bad defend the UP civilization while in way over their heads stories ... although I agree I would prefer an either/or with the Fatal Five. I have to break my short lived dc ban to pick this up. OK its a two issue ban break! <--- scab

Okay, so, now that the issue has come out I feel safe to say what I alluded to. This is just for those who didn't want to buy the issue and feel they need some more justification in doing so. There probably won't be a burial for Dirk. Because those aliens Tinya, Brek, and Jacques met, the ones they can't understand? They cooked and ate Dirk's body down to the bone, picked clean. All that was left behind besides a couple of unidentified bones was Dirk's costume.

I agree. It felt like the characters were interesting again. Best Legion issue for a long time. Giffen, you will be missed.

OMG
Best issue I've read in years. Beautiful art. Awed on every page, at what was happening, at what it looked like. XXXX is one of my favorites, and has indeed been screwed over in every incarnation. But the sheer excitement of that reading experience, the thrill of having no idea what was coming next, the fear for those characters I love, that passion for the Legion which ignited for the first time in years, well... it was worth it.
Or rather, it would have been, if the primary creative force behind it didn't leave the book two issues into it. I feel like my chain has been yanked... makes me not like Giffen very much at all right now, regardless of the reason for leaving... how dare he tease us with something this awesome and then take it away? I think this coulda been something special, feels kinda cruel to just get a taste of it... I don't think anyone else can take this beginning and make it work, nor would I want anyone to try.
PS: I don't think it is 100% confirmed that XXXX is XXXX, not that I would be surprised if was true.

No way. It beats "eaten by sewer rats" by a mile.

THE GOOD: I suspect we won't be hearing anything about the LSH being boring, with this issue... wow. Loved the art by Giffen and Scott Koblish.
THE BAD: Killing Legionnaires never goes over well even when well done. This particular one will be screamed about for a long time, I suspect. I'd rather it not have happened.
THE UGLY: Promethean Giants? Where'd THAT come from? Were the Puppet Planetoid giants unavailable? The New/Old Fatal 5 is looking pretty bad-nass so far.

Still holding my reaction on you-know-who's death until the end of the arc, at least. Still holding out hope for some hocus pocus/time travel/bait-and-switch or whatever - if this were the Silver Age there are any number of ways the events could be undone by issue's end.
On the other hand, definitely agree that my interest in the series has SPIKED because of this.

No way. It beats "eaten by sewer rats" by a mile. I haven't read either one but it sounds like there's only a fine line between them; They were both eaten - probably one of the worst ways to go. At least Dirk was already dead by that point I guess. But was Una even a real Legionnaire/character. Because of the way no one ever seemed to notice/care that Karate Kid and part of Triplicate Girl had somehow come back from the dead and then disappeared into the time stream I was always of the impression that they were some sort of false constructs or something (which would be apt since they were nothing but plot devices in that wretched series anyway).

P.S. I wonder what DC Golden Boy Geoff Johns thinks of this development. Based on the character focus he gave him in Legion of Three Worlds I got the impression that Dirk might have been one of his faves.

Lightning Lad reacted when he saw the bodies in Action 864 so I think they were real to him. He took the bodies back to the future.
