Grrrr..... While not one of my favourites personally, EVERY Legionnaire is someone's favourite and the wanton death lately has really been a downer. It used to be a Legionnaire's death was a rarity and now it's what, one a year?

Potentially, Dirk could survive this. As pure flame. Either way, we're saying farewell to the character, as we know him. And with an elemental om the team, Sun Boy is redundant. More Harmonia for everyone!

Hang on.

Tech suddenly dies. Legion in trouble and Giffen drawing...........

I feel like this has all happened before.

And they had to reboot to get over it. Not good, not good at all.

Still I do like the artwork here.

Gut wrenching first few pages. Giffen promised that no one in the Legion would be safe under his watch. Perhaps it's a good thing that he only lasts just 2 issues as artist. Otherwise everyone might just end up dead.

On the other hand many posters here on Legion World have been calling for a shake up of the series. Well, now we have it. This will be a must-read issue that could change everything.

Absolutely didn't see this coming at all. I see this is no longer a "spoiler" but I won't detail..it's just a surprising twist and I can't help but to think there's more to this "event". On another note, I can't wait to see the "Legion Lost" crew retuens to the 31st century where they belong. Great to see the return of exciting Legion stories!!!

Death isn't really a problem as long as it's not gratuitous. Let's see what happens.

*blink*

I'm not saying that Dirk is my favorite character but...this is gratuitous. What's the point of this? A characters death should mean something or it's pointless. I sincerely hope that Sun Boy survives this somehow.

Also...come on. The man gets decapitated by what appears to be an enormous piece of machinery and there isn't ANY BLOOD seeping between? Nothing? I mean, I hate to say this, but it almost looks comical this way.

That's just silly.

I think I'll save my money and see how it plays out. Impressed me as a dream. Dialogue clunky and as mentioned, that silly "death" pose. PG is probably having leadership nightmares.

That would perhaps make some sense of the terrible dialogue (and the oh-so-convenient 'nothing is working!' moment, which did have a nightmarish 'I'm running from slow-walking Jason, but he always ends up ahead of me, and now my cellphone doesn't work, and there goes the flashlight!' quality).

It's overwrought, out of character and self-centered to a sociopathic degree for Tinya to be more upset about how the current situation reflects on her leadership than on how it impacted the actual dude in the chair...

Hopefully, you're right. It *would* be in-character for Tinya to be freaking out about the responsibilities she's suddenly had thrust upon her and be having bad dreams about it. And Paul did go through the effort of foreshadowing something coming up with a certain character that wouldn't make much sense if that character wasn't around.

The Stonehenge bit in the Walt Simonson-drawn issue.

If it's true, it's Keith Giffen again making me eat crow. I had *just* consoled myself that he was already off the book, and that he couldn't do *that* much damage in such a short time...

Gosh! I think Dirk really wins the award now for most screwed over character in every Boot. Guy just cannot catch a break.

The scene previewed does seem exciting but it's annoying to me that the best part (i.e. the crash) happened off-panel. No Legionnaire should die without a word off-panel.

For better of for worse though, this preiew has certainly generated a lot of interest! I for one am curious to see where this will lead.

If only it does turn out to be a dream. Imagine if this is some type of Kobayashi Maru type training that new Legion leaders have to go through. And knowing the prevalence of the free online 5page preview in today's marketplace, perhaps Paul and Keith came up with this opening as ingenious way to get some buzz for the book.

Or what we are seeing in the preview is at face value. If so it is very lame and could backfire and push the book faster towards cancellation numbers. You have a book feature featuring superheroes in a science-fiction setting, and your big move to "shake things up" is killing someone (and with no sign of blood) in a space ship crash? Really? Really?

Oh hey, that cover mentions that they are 'at the mercy of the Promethean Giants.'

The Promethean Giants are the giant dudes stuck in the Source Wall, in Kirby's Fourth World, so it looks like Darkseid is back on the menu...

Whoa--totally unexpected! Still, with Tharok in the picture, everything may not be what it appears to be-- it may be that Dirk has been kidnapped to power whatever infernal devices the Fatal Five intends to ravage the galaxy with--no wait that was Earth Man's idea...

The Promethean Giants are tied to the New Gods mythos, so perhaps Darkseid may well be behind the scenes as well...

WAAHHHH I couldn't resist looking and now I wish I had!!

I am gonna call shenanigans on this being as black and white as it seems. I have a feeling there will be more to it. Even if it is what it seems though, I get the feeling from these pages that I think I'm supposed to; thrown in at the deep end of the pool with no bearings. This couple of pages is maybe the first time in the past two series that I have really felt anxious to find out what's happened and what will happen next.

Giffen's art also seems to be more improved than when he did the Emerald Empress annual. It's the same Kirby-esque style (which I actually quite like) but there seems to be a bit more detail in the faces? That could just be down to the inker I guess, but either way I like it. Very enthusiastic about getting this storyline now!

It's really Karate Kid, who is wearing Sun Boy's costume for some reason.

I'll go with the Tinya's dream or Kobayashi Maru theory, for now. There have been a few Sun Boy deaths in Legion history, though. It certainly does generate a lot of interest in the issue!

On a completely different topic, it seems that Polar Boy's powers now include producing mass from nothing-- as many other super-heroes do.

Otherwise, I am at a loss to explain where all that water came from, in a sealed ship, in the vacuum of space...

Even if that is solid nitrogen, not water ice, freezing air reduces its volume by a factor of about 1,000.

Not a criticism, just an observation.

Yeah, his power to 'generate cold' has often been portrayed as the ability to create ice out of nothing at all, even in the depths of outer space, where there literally is no water at all.

Same thing as Marvel's Iceman, or Captain Cold, who apparently has enough water in the teensy little backpack of his to create tons of ice over an armored car or city street or whatever.

Other than the Planetary dude, Elijah Snow, I don't think that there are any cold controllers in comic books whose powers don't come with a free side-dish of 'create ice out of nothing at all.' Trust Ellis to be able to make the actual super-power itself 'cool' and not need gimmicks like ice-hair.
