When I am on the subway (and sitting) and someone comes into the car that really needs the seat (and there are no other ones available) I'll offer my seat. Sometimes they try to wave me off, but you can tell that they really should have the seat. So I'll say "Do you want to get my mother mad at me?" At that point they will chuckle and take the seat.

Ooh Ooh, that brought a memory.

Backpacking Europe post graduation, pre-job. In the Netherlands headed to a brew tour, me and two girls. I'm American, they not. Get on bus. Old lady stands and tries to give me her seat. I figure, being nice to tourist. I say thanks, I'm fine. She insists. Kid on bus says, "war." I sit.

In 1844, the Democrats were split
The three nominees for the presidential candidate
Were Martin Van Buren, a former president and an abolitionist
James Buchanan, a moderate
Louis Cass, a general and expansionist
From Nashville came a dark horse riding up
He was James K. Polk, Napoleon of the Stump

Austere, severe, he held few people dear
His oratory filled his foes with fear
The factions soon agreed
He's just the man we need
To bring about victory
Fulfill our manifest destiny
And annex the land the Mexicans command
And when the votes were cast the winner was
Mister James K. Polk, Napoleon of the Stump

In four short years he met his every goal
He seized the whole southwest from Mexico
Made sure the tarriffs fell
And made the English sell the Oregon territory
He built an independent treasury
Having done all this he sought no second term
But precious few have mourned the passing of
Mister James K. Polk, our eleventh president
Young Hickory, Napoleon of the Stump

I lived in the same college dorm as a kid that went to Louis Cass High School. Louis Cass went to Phillips Exeter. I go to Phillips Exeter every summer for teacher school.

I had planned to head up to Detroit early tomorrow morning before school to get some bakery treats at the Mexicantown bakery. I have a lot of Hispanic students and locally there's nothing fresh. Thought it would be a nice week before Easter Break treat.

Which brings me back to Louis Cass.

He died in Detroit.

If I die, hope it's AFTER I get to the bakery. :-)

Cass Elliot and John Phillips were two members of The Mamas & The Papas.

They had nothing to do with Detroit, though.

In my neighborhood in the last ten days, there have been over 200 arrests for burglary, drugs and ho-ing plus a middle school kid suspended for bringing his gun to school.

More traditions under attack.

I just found out my grandmother's home village is now in Romania, not the Czech Republic as I had been told.

Perhaps Blockade Boy could move there; looks like it's a pretty quiet place. No Mexican bakery, though.

Our one-eyed, snaggled toothed outdoor kitty won't be clearing out the mice anymore. Neighbor had me take her to the vet a couple summers ago because she'd lost a lot of weight. The vet wanted to put her down. She (the kitty) didn't seem in pain. We started feeding her the good stuff. She got better.

No one is going to tell me animals can't communicate. A few days ago, I pulled in to the drive and she tried to get into the car before I could get out. She NEVER did that. She usually ran to the food bowl or for a scratch or even on occasion would try to sneak into the house but never the car. She was persistent but I didn't "listen." There really wasn't much left of her but it never occurred to me.... I guess she remembered that car ride a couple summers ago. The neighbor found her dead the next day.

sigh

She seemed to enjoy them.

We had a little "den" for her in the Winter and her tracks were easy to follow. She pretty much hit up four or five houses for food and scratches.

She'd sleep at night in front of the garage, guarding it I guess but I don't know from what. Probably from rabbits and woodchucks that have made such a mess of the yard and driveway with their tunnels. The boxer next door sees a rabbit and runs whimpering for the house...

Well, maybe someone will dump another kitty in the park across the street. That's how one-eye got here I think.

Well so far we've spent $185 dollars to have the septic tank pumped at work, and now we find out why it wouldn't flush. Seven ( 7) female hygene products that had it completely blocked up. That ... sentient... doesn't need to return to our business.

Damn you, you kids! Get off my lawn or I'm callin' tha cops!

Something pithy!
