to Cobie and Viv. You're aces in my books too, that's for sure! KP, thanks for letting your serious discussion thread turn into rampant praise and story-fests. I promise I'll try to get us back on-topic in a moment.

Seriously, you're all a good crew, my friends. I guess my biggest regret is that I can't post every day like some of you seem to be able to (self-pity pause. whine, whine... okay, I'm done).
group hug!!!!!!!

You know... there are a lot of times that I still feel like a latecomer to the game. I always find it kind of amusing to read about older periods in LMB history when Pov or Faraway or STU were newbies, because it seemed like they were so established when I got here. I'm sure there's a lot of people who feel the same way about me. We're a group that grows constantly, and thrives on new people bringing new ideas and fresh perspective. There will always be little in-jokes that not everyone gets. I don't get everything. But the best evidence that we're incredibly open to new people is the fact that we attract so many great new folks!

It is hard to think that some of these people are new, they get along with everyone and dare I say, are the most popular, especially once you compare EDE with an upstart like myself.
Eeeeww, I'm an upstart.

Jeff, I suppose I should start by apologizing for for misrepresenting or perhaps more accurately misinterpreting what your concerns were in your original post. But like I said then I wasn't sure and could be very wrong in my interpretation of what I read. So you have my deepest and most heartfelt apologies. In my own defense I have been wracking my brain trying to come up with any major differences in the MMB since I started posting here, and that single thing was the only thing I could put my finger on. Having said that I do believe that the MMB offers a little something for everyone... And "Under the Top Flirting" (of any kind) is just plain fun. Chuck P.S. I half expected to get home from work and find myself being blasted from all directions in this thread... (and maybe I deserved to be) The fact that that didn't happen just highlights what s special place Legion World IS! (and hopefully always will be!) Vote KP!

LOL, I NEVER wanted to go on-record as being against flirting of ANY kind. The last thing I need is Icefire showing up at my doorstep with a pink Uzi! You're all aces with me, Abin.

I don't think clique is exactly the term that I would use to describe the groups at Legion World, because that implies a sort of snobby exclusiveness that I don't think we have.
Certainly some posters interact more with each other than they do with others, but there are usually simple reasons for it, like similar interests or the fact that they happen to post at the same time of day or night. There are also some of us who have been interacting for years, so that familiarity binds us together a little more than, say myself and someone who has been posting for two weeks. That doesn't mean that these groups don't or won't interact with others should their paths cross.
If you are someone who doesn't like silly threads, for example, the chances of you interacting with someone who primarily likes silly threads are slim. Or if you only post in the middle of the night, then it's hard to interact with someone who posts only at noontime. However, that doesn't mean that these people don't want to interact with you. It's more that the opportunities are a little more limited.
Some people are like slinkys: not really good for anything, but they bring a smile to your face when you knock them down a flight of stairs

Here’s a thought from someone who, I guess, is now seen as an oldie, remember I was a newbie once as well. All those self worries and doubts about “breaking into cliques” I had when I first started posting on the old DC boards. I lurked for a while then took a deep breath and started posting.
And look at me now. Like Cobie one of the most beloved posters on LW, well, a respected and loved poster?...OK then, someone who people look forward to interacting with? No? Ah come on guys. OK some one you lot tolerate, ok satisfied?
Sniff, I need a cuddle.
For me, the time differences and the fact that I work and can’t seem to manage to stay up at night as long as I used to, (boom boom. Hows that for innuendo Mrs B?) means that I cant interact in real time with you guys as much as I would like. And believe it or not, there are still times when I think, ah what the hell they are all enjoying themselves so much I’ll not interrupt. In that respect maybe I am reacting to the closing of a group to outsiders and not trying to find a way in??
Are we cliquey? I don’t know but I would say no. There are certainly distinct groupings of friends, some more porous and flexible than others. But in any community of this size that’s going to happen. You hang around with people you share a “connection” with and that’s normal. Is it exclusive or inclusive? I can only speak for myself and say no. If I want to say something on a thread when Loser, Vi, Miss T, Cobie or Abin are flirting I will and I don’t feel that they resent that or want me to go away. (Correct me if I’m wrong here guys) this place is one of the most open and welcoming I found. It’s a real home from home, and I have been really honoured to meet in person both British and USA members of the LMBP and even more honoured to call them friends.
I always say the MMB as the place for people to do all of these things, to flirt, to be silly to role-play and everything. There are other boards for fan fic, serious discussion of the Legion and games, all of which I try to visit. But I admit the MMB is where I have the most fun.

Well said Princess. Since the beginning back on the old Legionnaires board the LMB has been accused of cliquism, mainly because there were a lot of people there who genuinely liked each other, and liked to post together a lot. It had nothing to do with elitism, it's just that we were all friends, and as such were comfortable enough with each other to "get loose". Newcomers were always welcome, in fact encouraged to join in. I think of the various forums at Legion World this one, the MMB, is the most similar to the old Legionnaires board. This is where people come to unwind and just hang out together, and as such the people who post here tend to fall into the same casual, friendly demeanor that characterized the Legionnaires board. Groups do form, as Michael said, based on common interests and such, but they're hardly exclusive, and at least in my time here I've yet to see anyone actually be shunned from posting here because they didn't share those same interests. Admittedly it can be intimidating for someone who hasn't posted here before to try to fit in, just as it would in real life when you're trying to get to know an established group of friends. There are always going to be some things that they "get" which you do not, just because they've known each other longer. That doesn't mean they don't want your company, they just know each other well enough to have established roles within the group, to have "in jokes" and such. The MMB is pretty much the same way. It might take a little effort to make your voice heard, but if you come here and assert your personality you will be accepted, serious, silly or what have you. Unless, of course, you're a jerk...

Any group that forms a bond can be perceived as cliquey, whether or not that's intentional.
The magic, the energy that bond creates makes it desirable to others - but joining the party late can seem daunting, wondering if you'll ever fit in or be accepted as the originals are.
To better expand upon my previous remarks, I would indeed agree that this board IS very welcoming to those who take the plunge, but at the same time, those of us who haven't been around five years are sometimes acutely aware that we're not as tight as the original crew are.
I don't see any way around that, nor should there be. It's only natural that people who have been pals for a long time have that bond. If you can't accept that as part of the package, leave. If you want to try to join, it's up to you to make the effort, get to know people and forge those bonds yourself.
We can only bend over so far to be welcoming. It's up to others to join in or not. If someone doesn't like silliness or flirting or any of our other shenanegans, maybe this just isn't the right board for them. I see no reason to try NOT to be ourselves just to attract new converts... this isn't a political club or cult (gasp! is it?).

I agree totally, Kent. I can use myself as an example, since I've been posting for five years. Over the years, I've seen people join up constantly, and have created a variety of friendships with them--I've known Lash and Cru since the beginning, Far in year two, Pov in year three, and so many more during those years and in the last year...and I consider them all to be *great* friends. All it takes is a little effort and a willingness to let the guard down and have some fun. I can remember not knowing Pov for quite some time, and now we're like the Butch and Sundance of meeting Legion Worlders

I'm trying very hard to visualize that, Cobie, but it's just not working. Ambush Bogey? Maybe a sketch would help.
