It looks to me like Garth's wearing his old silver age costume with the black panels on the sides of the shirt, which makes no sense at all, but that's Giffen for you.

I have to admit, I really enjoyed this issue. I'm not sure I agree with the "out of character" critique. So far, DnA haven't really established a character for Gear. Up til now he's been something of a utility character. And I don't think that Chuck was being lazy necessarily. I think he just got overwhelmed by the scale of the job. A good engineer knows how to do a job with the utmost efficiency, and that's what Chuck did. As for his manipulation of Superboy, it is April Fools after all.
Plus, I really like Giffen's art. Always have. It's different, I'll grant that, but I certainly prefer it to Coipel's stuff, for example.

I guess you should be careful what you wish for. I had been waiting for ages for a cool-down issue, and this is the schlock I got.
I agree that Gear hasn't had much of a character established, but I think Chuck has, and this wasn't it. I could buy him letting off some steam, though, but I just didn't think the issue was very funny.
The one thing it did prove, though, was that DnA can write stand-alone stories. After so many drawn-out arcs, it was nice to see some compact storytelling. I just wish it was with a more interesting story.
And the art -- I always liked Giffen's use of the nine-panel grid, but his style is just plain ugly. I'll have to pull out some Copiel issues to see just which is worse. It's a close call.
I don't think I'm ready to ask for my money back, but I was disappointed.

I'm surprised Giffen is getting credit for his humor, when all he did was do the art. Am I missing something?
I'm not sure I liked the match-up of Giffen's pencils with Al Milgrom's inks. When Giffen's at his Kirby-est, then that would work out well (like the scene on page 4-5 with the holo cleaning equipment). Otherwise, it might have been nice to have someone like Al Gordon to focus things a little (and to add some more nostalgia to the issue).
But otherwise, it was a lot of fun. Gear has nearly no personality, and unless you project a preboot Bouncing Boy personality on Chuck, he's almost a blank slate (at least since his date with Luornu way back in the last Stern-Moy collaboration). It's a bit unfortunate to give them personalities now, but then DNA's great Legion Lost characterization has pretty much fallen way to a lot of shorthand.
Heck, I had no idea it would take adding a Superboy to make the LSH a fun team again.
As for the Legion World damage -- didn't Darkseid's servants attack at some point? I don't remember them doing that much damage, though.
"NO, NO, NO, computer. NO CHEESE. I said, "PLEASE" ... please."

The attack of Darkseid's servants on Legion World was an illusion created by Universo.

"Son of a reboot", I liked that.
The art didn't look like "classic" Giffen to me, it seemed more cartoonish in some cases - but this was the comedy issue. Think of it as an Elseworlds and the breaks (such as LW being damaged or everyone looking older or being out of character) are easier to deal with.
I didn't really like Superboy being filthy, although we would certainly consider someone from 11th century Europe to be filthy by our standards - so it makes sense, in a way. The idea of a lustful Brainy drooling over pics didn't go over big with me, nor did the Chuck/Gear slacker silliness - think Elseworlds, Elseworlds.
But there were parts I liked. The idea that Brainy & Invisible Kid are the macro-scale brains, while Gear & Chuck clean up the mess - the sniping about Kid Q and Apparition - Invisible Kid's snide remark about Chuck having been drinking - the drinking party of Tinya, Brin, Tasmia and Jarth, an unexpected grouping but why not? - Ambush Bug's cameo...

I haven't picked up the new legion yet...but this foursome looks very "preboot mature-like" to me, especially Jarth! Something else else has to be done about that by the way. I'd rather have no Jan or Garth than to look at another form of disrespect to the original creators of thses two characters! Enough before I get started again!
Long Live the Legion!!!

I've been a Giff-fan for a long time, and enjoyed the nine-panel grid in v4. For the most part, I have enjoyed DnA's writing. Until now. I was just... aghast. Disappointed. Artwork. Storyline. Characterization. I don't think I'll be re-visiting this issue anytime soon.

I loved this issue. A nice break between the action. I am a huge Legion fan thus I love Giffen. The art was great the only "complaint" I have maybe it was a bit too impersonal compared to his volume 4 stuff. But we know the reasons for that. As another post put it I loved the "easter eggs". Jan/Garth in the same exact pose as in v4 methinks. I enjoyed this greatly. You notice it takes more than 2 minute to read. I like the Giffen art and storytelling. Al Milgrom inks...cool. Good story lots of fun! Maybe the most fun Legion story I've read since before zero hour. Thanks Mr. Giffen! I loved everything about this issue. Ok, Gear was a bit different. The page they are in suits hauling out the trash...that was beautiful. pax Jorge

Thanks for recoloring the costume, SoM. Now, can you make him look human again?
Jarth is in the worst possible company, imo. After one too many swigs, there's a risk Tinya and her confidant Brin will blurt out their suspicions about Jo and Imra right in front of him. That would *really* make him blue.

After Foundations and this issue I think it is official. DnA have run out of gas. I am a big time fan of Giffen, and even I thought this issues was lame. It is to be expected after alomost a 5 year run, but it is still painful to watch DnA go out like this. I really hope they can get it together and go out with a bang and not a whimper. It is starting to remind me of when Levitz ran out of gas on his last run.

The only thing I've read here about the issue (I won't get it for a week or 2, though I'm excited about it!!) that gives me pause is the "Brainy lusting over pictures" thing. Evillo would do that. I can't convince myself that Brainy would do that. 'Course, normally, Brainy wouldn't kiss Lyle either. Has Brainy been replaced by a Durlan spy? As for the issue-- I am still without a doubt that I will probably like the story and LOVE the artwork! (and EDE-- thanks for the compliment. Your stuf consistently cracks ME up-- when you're WRITING it, that is! *ahem!!!*)

Up til now he's been something of a utility character. I thought the "Legion vs. JLA" issue shed a bit of light on his character. A lateral thinker, good at exploiting his opponents' personality quirks instead of relying on brute force. And he's always been (within the DnA books at least) quite casual and good at fitting in. Which I thought was refreshing, since most "technorganic" characters tend toward the robotic in the mannerisms and make a big thing about not understanding the ways of organic folk. Now he comes back as Data with guns. Oh well.

Don't get your hopes up MLLASH - this issue is pure, unadulterated DRECK!
God, DnA just cannot get out of here fast enough for me! Was this issue supposed to be funny? There was not a single funny moment in here. Sorry, but Cub saying he's gonna 'hock a logie'? Superboy having bad hygiene? Cosmic Boy having magnetic sex? This is not funny! Its embarrassing - I am humiliated for DnA that Keith Giffen, who I'm sure everyone agrees can write a very funny comic, would have read this script. What must he have been thinking?!?
And as some people have mentioned, what was up with Chuck's personality? He is supposed to be cheerful, friendly and supportive. DnA's Chuck is an ass! And as for Gear - we wait 31 ISSUES (!) to finally see him do or say anything... and this is the characterisation we get? Ugh! That scene where he reveals his and Chuck's scheme to Superboy was just so... bad.
The art - I actually didn't mind as much as some others. I guess I just knew what to expect so couldn't be disappointed but I certainly wouldn't want to see Giffen on this title regularly.
If DnA weren't leaving in a couple of issues I would definitely be dropping this series after this comic! IMO the quality of writing on this series at the moment is equal to the worst ever periods in Legion history!

I completely agree with Blacula, I hated this issue. At this point I'm also counting the days to Steve and Keith's issue and then Gail's debut...

Giffen was listed in the credits alongside DNA as 'storytellers'.
I think he had as much to do with the writing as DNA... maybe even more.
As for Brainy lusting after the pictures... compared to sleepwalking the halls of the HQ in INTERNATIONAL MALE pjs to secretly build a female robot that looked exactly like Supergirl... it's positively pedestrian. Maybe that's why he yelled 'nnnoooo!' If a pecadillo's going to be discovered, it should be a really juicy one! Nothing less for a Brainiac of Colu!
Hmmm...now I want a pic of Brainy sleepwalking through Legion World in scandalous nightwear looking for a new place to stash his 'goodies'... or build a hidden robotics lab.

Hmmm. I forgot Brainy had once built the Supergirl sex toy in his sleep. Supression of sexual desire IS unhealthy I imagine. He went nuts soon after. So let the boy have his porn-pics collection I say. It'll keep him sane!

Hmmm. Maybe they weren't porn-pics at all, or should I say not *just* pics...
Maybe those holopics were the bases for the schematics of a whole Legion of Robot Bimbos...

Thus setting up a postboot "Revolt of the Girl Legionnaires" story, only it turns out their not the real girl Legionnaires but Brainy's robot bimbos!
That's brilliant!
